Wandering back to OP's post of crazy Wishlist thoughts for a moment...
- I would LOVE to see interiors that match our exterior skins so that all doors, floors, and features are accessible! Have a Country House, then you 100% get a door to access that tree so you can get to the rooftop seating area without having to create a jump puzzle! You also get your door to the back porch and that delightful fireplace and everything else. Yeah, it would make decorating a lot harder in some respects, but it would really feel like authentically the same house inside and out.
- I would also love to see apartments or other instanced housing actually within the city-states and not just in the adventurer districts, so I can have a nice townhome within Kugane or Ul'dah or someplace directly. Something that matches the city aesthetic and gives you balconies and terraces that overlook the city as a whole.
- I would, of course, also enjoy upgrading my Island Sanctuary to have a housing plot that can be upgraded over time to a large estate. That island was our reward for ending the Final Days, and I would really like to see it grow into its potential. Especially if we can make it so that we can teleport directly there and so can others regardless of if we're online.
- And finally, I would love it if they would give us access to ALL of the decorating assets used in buildings, inns, and dungeons in game. Just across the board, we can now use every single one of those furnishings we've been drooling over for 12 years.
That translation is a little more specific than the one I saw… this sounds like they’ve already decided to implement it for sure (“the discussions are now over”), and it’s just a matter of figuring out the technical details.
I wouldn’t expect it to come with the item limit increase and interior size remodel, unless we want those to be delayed for another eternity, but to hear them say they want to do it at all is very encouraging! I can float, but it’s a pain and it would be so nice to just place things normally!
not all of what you listed relates to the project costs some of that is just business expenses and operation costs.
for Final Fantasy XIV an CBU3 they are allocated funds in the millions or even billions but alot of it goes into advertisement and merchandise and as you said server maintenance an repairs as well as paying salaries and training or hiring new staff to the various teams does factor into that cost. so too does buying software to create new assets, but even with that said that should still leave them with enough funds leftover to provide quality improvements to existing infrastructure
lets not also forget that the mogstation/cash store proceeds supposedly go towards development costs too as stated by naoki yoshida himself unless he was lieing that is to save face an avoid bad press etc.
even so they do have passionate devs on their teams who work out things without pay as was proven with the majong minigame and headgear fits for viera/hrothgar. things that were done in the developers spare time an with good will/intention.
so its not impossible just unlikely that they'd be able to devote so much too what is consider niche sidecontent even though we'd really like them too place more urgency or thought to player housing and its systems etc.
