page 4 quarantines thread as it devolves into debate over whether or not chud is a slur
I doubt "just wanting better voice acting" is the crux of the argument here and that the true aim of this request is something more cruel.
Lmao I'm sorry for asking...that's so funny though.
It truly is as simple as that. I'm very very upset at the individual who was in charge of allowing this to happen, and I'm worried for the voice actress who is receiving the most criticism. It would have been clear from the start that the VA wasn't qualified for the role. By green-lighting the sub-par performance, one that players would be rightfully criticizing down the line, the person responsible effectively turned the dream of her life into the nightmare of her life. This never should have been allowed to happen.
I was blissfully unaware due to having French dub since ARR (despite not understanding a word of it). I had heard much about Wuk Lamat's VA, but was surprised to watch a stream and realise how pretty much all of the EN VAs for new characters were inferior. At least I won't have to feel bad to sticking with the French gang.
Hot take: Aside from a few standouts like Emet-Selch, the game's English voice acting has never been stellar. Dawntrail didn't even really stand out to me in that regard.
Then again, I grew up with game acting like this, so my scales may be skewed.
While I'm not entirely sure I agree with the original poster's sentiment, I did feel that the voice acting in this expansion, including from our seasoned Scions, was weaker compared to previous work.
I'm uncertain if this was due to voice direction issues or time constraints, but I wasn't impressed with the voice acting this time around either. There were multiple scenes where Y'shtola, the twins, and even Estinien sounded really flat and uninterested, almost as if they were half asleep or potentially sick during recording. There's a scene which I won't spoil, but basically Y'shtola gave a performance similar to "...oh no...what ever shall I do..." in the most bored, unconvincing tone I've ever heard from her actress.
This applies to much of the new cast as well. For instance, I believe Wuk Lamat's va did well in normal conversations, but her performance felt monotonous, making emotional scenes feel very flat. This seemed to be a common issue with most of the new cast, making it difficult to determine whether it was due to casting less experienced actors or poor voice direction. Honestly, I don't keep track of who the voice actors are, so I'm not sure about their experience levels before joining FFXIV.
It's unfortunate that there's so much drama surrounding the voice acting because it hinders our ability to have a civil, genuine conversation with constructive criticism. The loud, hateful voices have ruined that opportunity for the rest of us, I guess.
