Again only because SMN’s kit is so empty there is literally nothing you can possibly ghost by summoning the Demi’s
As long as Bahamut and pheonix are in the game carbuncle can functionally never do anything that involves doing damage

If Bahamut/Phoenix also do what the rest of the primals (Garuda/Ifrit/Titan) do which is to do its signature ability and leave, then it will open up the possibility for Carbuncle to do something again, rather than standing there doing nothing. Giving back pet abilities will increase the buttons SMN has to press and giving pet positioning focus, which SCH surprisingly still has.
Even though they emptied it, they still managed to release a job that was ghosting searing light because what they did wasn't solving anything, They did not actually solve the problem that plagued the smn.
With the smn they really acted like clowns.
Pet positioning on SMN is pretty pointless because the bosses hitboxes are the size of Jupiter these days, SCH at least actually has to consider the fairy position because whispering dawn and fey blessing have limited range (whispering dawn especially barely reaches outside of most modern bosses hitboxes these days)
I want SMN to have something remotely interesting but I don’t think active control of the pet position is it, at best you get a “move carby away for Garuda, close for ifrit” sort of situation, at worst you just stick him in the middle then ignore him completely since SMN doesn’t have a skill that resets the pet’s position (like dissipation)
I think the fact that the hitboxes are infinitely large is a good point.
But never say never.
BUT in an ideal world,
- If you restore the buff range to 15y or 12y, already with a miserable number, you are encouraging the smn to have to put the pet in the correct position to be able to take all the players, and also, perhaps, to delay its use.
- If you give him a dot to place on the ground and hold up, if the boss starts moving again, it could be interesting.
- If you give it a ogcd "Rescue", with a smn that goes back to being a caster and not a phys ranged, the pet can be used as a tp to reach long distances.
- If you give it a party shield with 12y, it could be interesting
- If you give it EF with 15y, it could be interesting
if I were a Laplace demon and knew everything, I would have been really happy with the state the smn was in, considering the state it is in now.
If they had told me that for 3 years I would have an empty smn, done badly and left half-finished, I would have signed in blood to have double the ghosting just to not have this rubbish.
The old smn simply wanted 2/3 things:
- that the demi-summons were eliminated (which is objectively the problem that caused the ghosting)
- that the phoenix and bahamut summon button (Ill repeat: summon only) were combined.
- Some wanted rightly, the return of the pet with aggro and hp.
- Ruin 3 as a skill too present and persistent in the rotation (aka more cast skills to weave in)
the rest was more wishlist than protest.
Those who complained the most were those who didn't play smn because they had no hands.
Instead we are here, with a smn that ghosts the same as before and instead of having the demi-summons eliminated, we have obtained 3 more. Fantastic. Designers' reading comprehension: -infinite

That said, some old SMNs, myself included, were hopeful about this rework. Personally, if they had completely changed it, but kept the filling of satisfaction from when I used it, I would be happy.
I couldn't wait to use all my summons to manage the timer and the mechanics of the bosses, I couldn't wait to use my carbuncle to get upgrades and manage its position, I couldn't wait to be able use my resources to the fullest.
I couldn't wait.
Instead they released a mono button spam instant cast smn which should objectively be in the phys ranged category.
Having lost:
- management of the pet's position and resources
- the ruin 4 stacks to be weaved with the casts to be optimized for damage and movement
- the dots to always keep up
- identity in the gameplay of phoenix and bahamut
- elasticity in being able to delay my burst phases
Having obtained:
- a pet that is present a few seconds between one demi-summon and the other that staring at me
- lots of nice VFX
- boredom
Nice. yeah, this new smn is really good... Strange that anyone would complain about it
Past SMN had kind of an interesting rotation, but it was a worse summoner. Endwalker SMN is the best summoner so far, but has a boring rotation. What they have to do is keep what makes EW SMN a great summoner, and improve its rotation. To me, EW SMN's biggest problem is that 4 out of 5 available summons practically have the same mechanics of spamming instant spells which means it fails to deliver the promise of 'your summon choice matters.' The only summon that kinda has any consideration is Ifrit which has slow casts, and forced movement. What Dawntrail SMN needs is to not be afraid of funky mechanics like Ifrit, and make the existing summons, and any potential future summons more mechanically diverse.
I agree completely with you. You are damn right, but it wouldn't be enough.
This should have been the BASIC rotation of the smn right from the start.
But like any self-respecting job, every basic rotation is accompanied by resources to manage.
Sure, it's definitely a step forward, but it's not enough for 3 years of emptiness, its not enough to match the old smn.
