I haven't done anything for Halloween since I was in my early teens lol. That was almost 2 decades ago now.

the America envy always comes out in these type of threads. I don't care about Halloween or the maintenance but I can understand why people would be annoyed.
Just watch a good horror movie(s) instead, that's what I'll be doing.
It should only affect the NA data centers as I don't remember NA being down while they did the other Data Center expansions. Also not everyone celebrates Halloween. I'm surprised this somehow isn't also I took time off thread complaint about the maintenance. And fairly surprised that there isn't a thread with someone saying they did.
Maintenance is doom. Maintenance is death. It the end of the world.
You just answered your own question. Square Enix is a JAPANESE company. Almost 1/3 of the players are Japanese. Yoshida is Japanese. They have no reason to cater to us whatsoever. If you don’t appreciate their culture, don’t play their game. It’s that simple. Plenty of American games have Halloween events. You don’t go to Japan to promote gaijin no gomi and FFXIV is no different.
You hit the nail on the head. They don’t owe us ANYTHING. The sub for this game is cheaper than Netflix. Yoshida pours his blood, sweat and tears into this game and we pay pennies in exchange. I think we should be grateful that we’re getting anything at all. This isn’t Blizzard that we’re talking about here, this is Square Enix. They’re doing what they can with the small amount of resources that they have.
It is a little odd as someone else mentioned because this particular event is something they have a version of in-game, though not necessarily on the same day. So they know it's kind of one of the "big ones". Also, there are celebrations either on that day or the next day in places besides NA. It's unfortunate and the timing is unlucky and as someone in NA I understand the bummer of not being able to do it on the actual spooky night, but they're probably working on a specific schedule that they can't really adjust. One good thing is they did announce this with enough time that events can hopefully be adjusted.
Halloween exists in Europe as well, and it has roots in/influences from European folklores and cultures. Such as the Lemuria feast of ancient Rome, Samhain, and Allhallowtide season. Ironically Americans tend to make a much bigger deal about it than modern Europeans do. And Japan doesn't have a harvest festival with spiritual/afterlife associations the way the western world has, so for them this is mostly some cute thing that happens and they make merchandise for and call it a day. Kind of like April Fool's. So naturally they wouldn't find any major meaning in it, especially not when the continent that essentially made it doesn't give a darn about it anymore.
I think it's only a holiday if you're Wiccan anyway :p
