I think there are always 2 sides of stories. OP might be the douche one, but we'll never know because we are only hearing his story.

I forward it to the writers of Days of Our Lives.
How do I deal with online drama?

He called me bad names! ... I liked him! /sob
Laugh at the people who take a game seriously.
Drop the linkshell. It's a game that's meant to be enjoyed. Not a job. Find a linkshell that doesn't ask for your soul. There's plenty of them out there.
Ack! That's terribly ; ;.
If you do not be mean, if you do not use bad language, and then they start attacking and using bad language at you, then they are not nice nor are they your friend (unless they are one of those people that 'communicate' that way but don't actually mean hostility).
I do not normally run into this, but if I sense the conversation will go that way, I simply say I'm sorry (it's okey to say sorry even if its not your fault), and then end the conversation politely. I.e:
I'm sorry, I did not know it would be like this. It would not work for me. This is really something I can not do. I hope you guys good luck and you do well! Please take care.
At worst I usually get a sad 'Ok'. If it's anything more heated than that, I would ignore it. And if it persists, I would /blist for a while.
(Mean people only continue to be mean if they know you are listening to them)
You were in the wrong OP, you should apologize.
Such people exist in RL and MMO ...
Try to "Take It Easy"
You don't really have to lose friends ^-^ just avoid them, when you see them, /hello
I tell people up front "I don't do drama, I have zero tollerance and if you try to incorporate me into any of it we will part ways." Most people I hang with are anti drama like myself so I have made great RL friends online especially from FFXI.
Those who are drama whores usually give a remark like "Whatever man!" or something and go about their business never to be seen again unless they really need something but I cut them off from the gravy train. :P
As for your examples in the OP in the first situation joking or not they could have taken offense to your joke even though you said it in jest. Could have been having a bad day and misread what you said and then you slung a joke insult at them.
Your second example your LS leader was a prime example of a Drama Whore and those people I avoid in every game, MMO or not.
