To be fair, from what I hear the BBC tv license tax thing is getting phased out. European or not, that sounds pretty sweet.

This seems like such a bad idea, I actually thought it was a joke. They are really going to have 24 hour maintenance on a major American holiday?
How dare they try to make me spend time with my family, WHAT ABOUT MY FREEDOM!?!?!?!?!
MY-- FREEEEEEEEeeEEEDOM!!
:D lol
More seriously though, I can understand it's a bit frustrating given a busy schedule and now you finally get a day off and on that day off that you wanted to play you can't... The frustration makes sense! If you do have family to spend time with though, then def. do that! We have a hard time with keep traditions up due to a whole bunch of reasons, and so keeping the 4th as a family day with BBQ feels like... almost a cultural duty lol. If you're American (since I assume you're getting the day off on the 4th- if you're just upset with maintenance and the 4th means nothing to your schedule then I don't know what to say.. cause.. maintenance has to happen sometime lol).
It probably wouldn't be a terrible idea to have it not on a major country federal holiday though, but I just want to say try to keep the tradition alive if you can- it's a good one (to spend time with family). Like Lunar New Year type stuff.
This thread pops up almost every 24 HR maint "this was my one day to play this month"
1 day won't kill anyone. Take the time to visit family or hang out with your significant other.
I get this, and I get why I'm getting this type of reply. I will admit, I'm not as knowledgeable about other countries and their major holidays as I should be so I apologize if I missed the opportunity to advocate for you when it happened in your part of the world. I feel as if it's a bad customer service practice to do a 24 hour maintenance on a major holiday for any part of your subscriber base.
Not a major holiday. 1 Country celebrates it. One. Not a major holiday. Not even close. Also, I suggest you check the numbers on the majority of where this game is played in a single country. It isn't the US. Surprise!
GW2 has nice server Infrastructure. They don't need to bring servers down ever when applying updates. Players can even play the game with different builds, incase they were logged in while the update went live. They get a warning that they will be booted in couple of hours in order to get them to up to date too.
