I don't like that I so often run it with only 6-7 people, as the other 3 AFK even during fights. It's gotten to be a really tired chore.

Oh wow, that's surprising! I was convinced they'd done everything they were ever going to do with those instances, but that's good news for any future newbies whenever they get around to that. But I still feel like facepalming because they've waited ALL THESE YEARS. Imagine if those improvements had already been implemented before this current surge of new players came in!
Imagine 1.0 didn't suck. Imagine they'd had 5 years for ARR. Imagine Stormblood was just Ala Mhigo, followed by another expansion that was solely Othard.
Not much point imagining what isn't real. Right now the 'surge of new players' gets the same experience as all of us. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This has been brought up a few times in the past year or so, but unfortunately when asked for sourcing, it has never proven to be the case.
The devs have repeatedly said they'd like to change them, however no definitive timeline or action plan has ever been stated
Yes, but they never actually say what it is they're planning to do, nor give any sort of timeline.
