Ironically enough, modern builds tend to be the most slot heavy out of everything I've ever done or seen done.
We really need more slots!

I could do with like a hundred more slots in my mansion. The basement is kind of open, but the top two floors are good, aside from tabletop items. It sucked at Christmas trying to decide what I could take down in order to put up the trees, put out presents, and other decorations. That was when I was like, we really need more slots.
I dunno I think my cottage is fairly modern but I feel it's far more welcoming than a hospital!

Still I wouldn't say no to an item increase in apartments and houses across the board!
I'd like at least a 10 item increase for outdoor stuff.
I would like more than 100. Double what we currently are allowed would be a dream. ^^;
I refuse to remove anything for seasonal decorations anymore. It takes too much effort for me to decide what has to go. I just reserve 1 free slot for one random seasonal item at the time, and that is it. :(
I have a mansion and refuse to cut off an entire floor so I can just make it looked lived in, so I do what I can with the items I have to make it look homey. That usually means a bit of a minimalist design and nothing too fancy can really be made, but I've made it work.
I've been thinking about this for a while now. Why not just apply the FC personal rooms system to personal houses and remove the one per character limit? Think about it: the system is already there. All they would have to do is attach it. Sure, it doesn't technically increase the slot count for the house, instead it adds another room with its own slots. But it wouldn't require as much of a retrofit to the engine in theory. No need to load more objects all at once, just each individual room as needed. Add on more outdoor furnishings alongside it and voila!
I've personally been tempted to leave my FC and make one with my main and 7 alts to in effect do just that. I'm crazy enough to want to make a house that has everything in it, from a dedicated space for each type of crafting to RP elements such as an arboretum and a bathroom. The only thing stopping me from actually going through with it is that I owe my current FC a lot and don't want to just up and leave them like that.
In the end, though, the furnishing limits - both interior and exterior - are just too low per size. A lot of people I know don't dare buy a small because they know it won't hold enough stuff for what they want to design. Sure, you can get a lot of mileage out of larger items, but the small stuff is what makes a place feel alive, and it adds up fast.
