The Maiden idea was a miss. Most people don't even know you can spawn one of 2 rare mobs during SB FATE's that buff your next FATE's exp, so few people bother with them and their new system is wasted.

Also bonus exp for SB Fates is very poorly designed. There are numerous FATES that are 2-stage, without any indication of this. The first stage tends to give you a fraction of the exp (maybe 40-50k), however it will consume any bonus (maiden buff or Exp bonus) and the second stage will trigger without any bonus at all. It's baffling that passed through testing.

When I first started playing FFXIV, I thought FATEs and leves were an interesting, innovative way to level (I had just come from RuneScape mind you), though I hardly touched them anymore by the time I reached Heavensward. I felt the whole EXP bonus thing they introduced with the Stormblood FATEs was a great addition but ultimately inconsequential with how much (or rather little)it gives you. The last time I farmed fates was when Stormblood first released and I didn't use Duty Finder out of fear that I would be disconnected and subjected to a 3 hour queue to get back in the game, but nowadays I really only touch them when I'm on the absolute cusp of leveling up.
It's kind of a shame too, I like the lore tidbits that often come with them and some of the ones that come in series are spectacular (like the Dataqi Chronicles). They make zones feel a bit more alive. I'd love it if they upped the EXP a little on them, maybe throw in some additional prizes on more of them as well.

The main problem here, in my opinion, is that fates are the only source of repeatable open world group content and they aren't emphasized enough. I mean I guess you have your hunts but they aren't really the same thing in my eyes. Instanced content is great and all, and I don't think there's anything really wrong with the game at the moment but I do think that the feeling of logging on and leveling up would feel a lot healthier if you didn't have to just wait on dungeon ques to pop, or tear your eyes out with non stop potd. At the very least, perhaps let people que up for dungeons and also join groups without being kicked from que. I think this players would be more open to doing fates together if they knew they could group up to organize where they were heading and work together, but also not get kicked from their que.

Might be easier to just add either a zone based or an expansion based sub-currency akin to beast tribe tokens or Centurio Seals with fates, then after you do so many you can buy some periodically added vanity items or exchange them for the tome gear augmenting books that you can normally get with Centurio Seals. Just make the number of fates needed sort of high and not restrict the acquisition of the currency by current job level. Basically farm your augment item exchange books while leveling another job.
Say 1000-2000 currency per item, 1-100 currency per fate, with 100 currency ones being the raid level bosses, i.e. Odin, Behemoth, Couerlregina, Ixion, then 50 for the full party zone bosses. After that just drop the amount per more and more.
