Make Viera and Hrothgar non-binary / gender-neutral?

Well this is quite an interesting idea! I dont really want to tacle the problems and obstacles that this would or wouldn't cause the developers, I'm not a game designer.

But I find it highly interesting. I started in GW2 with making a female but veeeery flat chested Sylvari (plant person) to be played as a male character in roleplay and I did this as well with an Au Ra female in FFXIV because the bulkyness and the movement animation of the males just don't appeal to me. But either game I had to struggle with the armor and glamour that left me with very limited options to conceal the chest area because there is still something. That tends to make it more complicated, limited and sometimes destroyes the illusion but seems like I have to do it for the Viera all over again until maybe SE shows uns some mercy and just lets Viera and Hrothgar be a perfectly normal race like any other.

Which is a perfect environment to add subtle lore about how Viera that don't "identify" as a boy, aren't considered as "boys" and allowed to remain.
It actually opens up a lot of interesting possibilities for quest lines and additional nuanced lgbtq+ lore. And again, adds some nice diversity to the game.

It would definitely be interesting, I'll give you that, but unfortunately I don't think Naoki "Male rabbits are weird" Yoshida or the playerbase as a whole are ready to tackle this idea in a way that would work.

And yes, if you people actually played single player FF games, you'd realize that certain things are well established and that changing them certainly feels weird from a perspective of a fan of the series.

Seriously, why is the backlash for no Male Viera getting higher and higher? Now people want the entire lore to be changed so they can get their way....Anybody who says Gender Politics arn't being pushed into the game is lying to themselves.

Actually there are also people who are intersex. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex
And claiming there are only 2 sexes is somewhat discriminatory/exclusionary towards them.

And here is an article describing the science behind sex as a spectrum: https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...y-simplistic1/

So no reason why this game has to assume 2-sexes for every race.
There are lots of options :)

Oh, boy, there was this whole THING in another thread but basically: A) Sex is biological, while gender is a social construct, this game uses the latter to mean the former but that's how they roll. B) There are actually more than two sexes, since people can be born intersex, and may or may not develop the secondary characteristics of both, and then there's XXY individuals or maaaany other arrangement of chromosomes (mostly extra X chromosomes, because of the mother).

Their lore isn't written that way. So the game has already "assumed" for Viera.

Regarding that second article, I'd like to see you explain it clearly, rather than just linking it, because there is plenty of ideological fluff/propaganda masquerading as and using the language of science.
