“non-essential” premium content, does SE want this kind of reputation if it continue?

To the people saying we should "Wait and see." I get that you're trying to avoid the doomsaying, and all that jazz. But we have waited and seen many times before. This behavior isn't just limited to this specific instance. Just because SE is doing this now to FFXIV doesn't mean that this isn't the same kind of thing we have seen over and over again from other companies. We don't want that kind of garbage in our FFXIV. You know what happens when you wait and see with crap like this? YOU GET MORE CRAP.

Its optional though.Nobody really needs this app.Its a convenience and nothing more.Like i said before the main people who will suffer from this app are price gaugers as you could potentially see a lot more undercutting.
Now if it was a service that already existed and then they decided to lock it behind a paywall after i'd understand the concern but this isnt the case.
Also another way of looking at it would be that the people who do pay are ensuring the upkeep of the non paid version of the app for the rest of the player base as it's likely the budget for this app isnt coming from the main game subscription fees.

This is the part that gets to me. There's a reason we use the "<something> limitations" meme, because its always something or another which they say it stops them from doing whatever they are using the limitations scapegoat. And here we have the example to, as an option, expand inventory cap on the chocobo saddlebag and even add another retainer (which will likely be an additional cost and not part of the sub) if you decide to pay for this convenience/service.

Will we get something equivalent for us who won't pay this fee? Very likely. Still doesn't: Make sense to "magically" not have a 'limitation' if we can fork more money, nor does it make sense when there are serious concerns that need to be properly address in regards to botting in PvE + PvP areas and the myriads of QoL changes/improvements/additions that the main game needs.

I agree that because its an option, you can choose not to. But this is not just optional, it's price differentiation.

Yea is optional until they add more stuff making to NO longer optional. Well then SE better pay them. Agen WoW, Destiny all other game out there get they app FULL everything for FREE. This first app I seen even in a SUB game ask you to pay for "Optional stuff" for simple stuff. Perhaps I'll accept a one time purchase but no a sub this ain't dating app.

The disconnect for me is that I don't consider anything Square Enix have started selling to be the kind of crap to worry about. It's not a slippery slope if you haven't actually stepped onto the slope yet. Granted, they now have the infrastructure to sell tokens and who knows what else, but they're only using it for something that there's a legitimate reason to rate limit. The first time they actually cross a line, I'll complain, but no amount of glamours, mounts, extra retainers, or the like is ever going to be across the line for me. To me the argument essentially sounds like "they're selling stuff of no consequence, therefore they're going to start selling things of consequence!" and that doesn't logically follow.

Retainers started to cross the line, the amount now is past crossing the line, now they are locking basic UI features behind a second sub fee? I don't think so. So everyone posting this wait and see is BS, and yet SE reps can reply here:

And it's this sheer obstinance that only damages their own cause. The OP is so concerned about being "right" and having everyone agree with her precise definition of Pay to Win, that people who otherwise may support the thread(s) have shifted away from them.

Complaints and criticisms are valid, yes. And I'd argue the overwhelming majority of NA/EU dislike at least parts of the Companion App. But beating it into the ground accomplishes nothing. You know what got EA's attention? A single reddit thread with over 600,000 downvotes and a mass drop in both pre-orders and sales. Spamming your point just gives companies an out by saying you're exaggerating. Which, sadly, the OP has.

The game programmers seem to be doing some ‘creative’ things to provide us with extra storage - is it possible they could be using the app as a way of storing that item data on the app/iCloud/whatever instead of on their servers? (I don’t really know if it works that way.)

Another post... yay... why not just quit already? I'm starting to think some of these people (you know which ones) just want to complain alot so people pay attention to them... we get it you hate everything SE does with this game... everything needs to be "fixed"... all content should be "new", "fresh", and "different"... they need to do something "totally unique for a mmo" like copy system X from game Y... you'll NEVER be happy no matter what they do... every time I see a thread started by a few certain individuals I keep praying it's a quitting for good thread...
