It does not have to be an either/or! Leave the current housing system as is, but also add option for a paid housing. Ie.: An instanced, Medium Size house for $2 a month, much like additional retainers.

Paid housing is silly. We already pay enough in other fees.
I know the pain I am also not from the US, but even so while I am not a huge fan of the idea I do not think players that can barely pay their sub should be a factor since the sad thing is said players are in such a minority that they should not have any bearing on the actions a company should make.
No way in 7 hell's will i support this
You could honestly make a pretty valid argument for this. If you accept that SE can't create enough wards to meet demand, because "too much data!", ok, fine: So housing places a huge strain on server resources, resources that are paid for by sub fees. Why should someone blocked from owning a home have any portion of their sub money go towards paying for the inordinately excessive resource usage of home owners?
Its a horrible idea for a lot of reasons, of course. Everything about the way SE has managed housing has been absurd.
Just another thing to add to the list of "ideas that might have worked if they had started housing with them, but would be a ridiculously terrible idea to try and pull off now".
It could be a better solution for SE to charge for temporarily pausing the demolition clock.
Is so simple to solve the problem. Do the house sells on mogstation. On Elder scrolls the houses are on the cashopp system, so everyone have a house. And we can have one large, medium and small and the guild house (we can have more than one house). Eso housing system is so much better than the SE one. And people that already own a house will stay with them. Also the gil sellers and buyers problem would be solved if the houses are on mogstation. We paid 30US$ to buy a large house on Eso without sub fee and then it will be yours forever on your account.
