The way it was explained to me by a friend, that all of the info is stored on the clients machine, and just small blocks of data are sent to tell your machine what options to draw, and that is why the PS3 was holding back what could be done as all those options have to be stored in memory for fast access. So while 10 or 10 thousand options make very little to no difference at all in the performance of a typical gaming computer, the console is very restricted because of it.
