Off the top of your head, without looking, can you tell me what stats the gordian black mage chest piece has on it? do you care? no, because it's the highest ilevel. you know it has Vit, you know it has Int.. that's all that matters.. ;)

i don't know the individual player so i couldn't say.

and yes the stats do matter it's why we have bis. do i know it? no but i also don't play for bis.

if you see a player in all tome gear or all raid gear they are weaker then someone who finds the best gear (secondary stats)

People are fine with it now because this game really isn't that old, but eventually the constant copy and paste approach to progression in this game is going to hurt the game in the long term. Heck, if I asked people who I got to try this game why they stopped, I think I can safely say the the gear progression system in this game will certainly be one of the top reasons. could they get tired of it? of course. does that mean they will? no

people who think a like normally play together so if someone doesn't like the progression there is a good chance thier friends will too. (not saying you don't have a point) but just because you know a few people who don't like how progression is doesn't make all of the players.

That's why I think this is such a perfect solution. Final Fantasy IX nailed this problem 15 years ago.

You have your BiS lance; Dragon's Hair, but you also want to go out and get a Kain's Lance or Holy Lance, because honestly, what chump doesn't get Freya the Dragon's Crest ability?

So basically the same thing that's already happening, without any unique gear stats.. what's the first thing you do when you enter a dungeon and someone isn't pulling their weight. You examine them and then..

I've never once seen a player get kicked for having tome gear of the same ilevel over raid gear. even not being BiS.. I have seen people getting kicked for lying about completing a duty and/or not knowing their rotation.

I certainly think it would be possible to add special effects to weapons while still maintaining balance between classes. Maybe don't even put these special effects on endgame weapons for now and just have them on low level stuff like the dungeon gear for regular dungeons. That was people who are leveling (where starts aren't that influential anyway) can have fun with it. This would be very cool and useful for things like primals where using the ifrit weapon on shiva might deal extra damage... I'm not saying it should be godly damage, but maybe equivalent to like 20 ilevels stronger than it usually is (which is still weaker than the best gear you could take into the fight, but for someone who just got to this point in the story its a nice boost just for a single fight). In that example, its not like people would kick you for not having the ifrit weapon, just like people don't currently kick those who don't have hive weapons.



I definitely like the idea of more horizontal progression, even if its just having the choice between using chest armor with either +crit OR +accuracy... I remember in other MMOs I would spend quite a bit of time figuring out which pieces of gear I wanted to go for... I want the chest from Dynamis, the head piece from Sky, the legs from Sea, and the hands from this Notorious Monster. Its not always as fun when you put all your eggs in the same basket, like all the FFXIV endgame content has been. Back in FFXI, every expansion had its own endgame with different, comparable loot. I think that was a much better design.

I do miss WoW tier set bonuses sometimes, but each tier was usually hit or miss. I'd never want back an XI system where some outside event like weather can affect stats though. I'm okay with world mobs as they are, I'm just waiting on the HW fate changes.

3.0 feels as if they did nothing but work on the looks to promote the game and have nice cutscenes. Contentwise it offers nothing new at all. It is even shocking that they dared to give us the same stuff as in 2.0 only with different looks. And charge for it like a full new game. (even though - looking at the way content updates lost their drive in 2.0, they basicly used the subscription money to work on 3.0 mostly). It is quite a rip off and im very sensitive about upcoming updates.

not being kicked doesn't mean it's not important, other than raids you can get away with any items.

i was just replying based on how you said people only look at ilvl which isn't true. some people do (i do) but that doesn't mean bis doesn't exist/isn't important.

WoW did it in vanilla and no one was a fan, seems to work better in a single player game like monster hunter. The adding skill or attributes to skills can be fun sometimes if done right, but the problem is that adds a second layer of balance that at this time still needs to be worked out. I might be fine with change on what secondary stats you can get form different gear (so come out with three dungs and one give det, one crit, etc.) So that you can mix and match secondary stats form dungeon gear (as long as it is not random and yes maybe someone will come out with the "best" but it is fun to collect all the gear). I just do not think anyone likes game breaking stuff or reqs. for gear like you need at least this much poison resist to tank this dung. (I think people are already fed up with accuracy caps and needing this much accuracy to continue).

Because in addition to carrying around gear for 12 Jobs, i absolutely want to also be carrying 3+ sets for each of the 12 Jobs.
Because we don't ALREADY have a buttload of crap to store.

The problem all these threads seem to miss is that if we had for example, 20 unique stats and random job specific bonuses, then the math folk would simply do as they did for WoW and every other MMO (XI *only* got away with it because you could change gear in combat) and math out the best stats to make the best possible DPS and then all other stats are junk.

Hell, as a Warrior in WoW during early Lich King, i loved my crit/haste build. It wasn't the greatest DPS, but it was incredibly fun. Yet i was not allowed to use it in raid content because full Strength+Armor Penetration was statistically superior in every way.

You need to realize that if you have 100 unique stats to mix and match with, all of those need to be 100% on par with each other. Thus removing the "fun" because it doesn't matter what you wear, your DPS/healing isn't going to change.
If one stat gets even 1% ahead of the other stats, everything else is junk.
