Hahaha I'm in the same boat as you, using my old XI token and praying the battery doesn't die on it. As far as I know, if the serial number sticker is in tact, it's pretty easy to get them to remove it with a phone call. The hardest part is sitting on hold for an hour and calling during business days probably. Luckily I already have a spare token that's never been used from my 1.0 CE purchase though.

Ditto on the XI purchase. My BLM got hacked and I lost MILLIONS worth of gil in items overnight. It took something like 6 weeks for SE to complete their investigation and recover my character--account was locked and I couldn't play for over a month, yet I still had to pay my subscription. It was a no-brainer for me when they introduced the token Got mine from the initial pre-order batch in something like 2009. It is STILL working to this day. And I logged into that game almost Daily back then, pretty much the same here. I have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.

As for when the battery conks out...it has an indicator that will start showing up to let you know the battery is getting too weak. At that point, can just switch to using the phone app I guess (provided you have a smartphone or can run it through emulation on a laptop). I like the physical token though...will probably order a replacement and switch to the phone app until it arrives.

Too bad the one time password token doesn't give you a mog satchel in this game :P

This policy was instituted by SE for FFXI ( well before the release of FFXIV) due to the pandemic of account hacks. One of the signs that an unauthorized party is using the account is the change sudden change in ISP. Granted it could be because a subscriber could be playing on a laptop from a friend's house.....or it could not. SE has no way of knowing. In order to accommodate the laptop players SE instituted the policy of allowing anyone who purchased ($9.90), registered and used a token to bypass the policy. There are a number of things SE does that I disagree with. This is not one of them. Please bear in mind you have as much responsibility to protect your account as SE does

My old FFXI one is about 9 years old now. Still going strong.

If you aren't wanting to use the One Time Password, then this is what you get.

I suggest you do, though. Like Gramul and myself, we can play on any PC/PS4 without changing our main passwords. Plus, added security.

Nice thanks! I always thought you had to pay for it since it gives you the free teleport which I thought it was what we were playing for, didnt know there was a free phone app, im excited now

Note that they raised the price on the standalone physical token to $10.99 USD or 1099 Crysta on Labor Day 2013.

Considering the original devices have been in use for 6+ years old and are still working...the physical token is still pretty freaking cheap. Even if it only lasted a couple years, the benefit of securing your account against potential malicious activity and the ensuing fallout/cost from it (ie: account is locked during investigation/recovery--but you still have to pay your subscription fees) far out-ways virtually any argument about the cost or "hassle" of an extra password entry field during logon. And let's not forget the the gil you can save with the free teleport. Depending where you set it, that could be north of 500-600 gil a pop, and there is no limit to how many times you can use it as it is your normal teleport action.
