I don't like the glamour system so much. Maybe it's because I've encountered a MUCH MUCH MUCH better system, in LOTRO.
There, you basically have a "layer" of equipment you put over your equipped gear, which is the gear that appears on your character. Then you don't need to bother when you upgrade your gear, you will always look like what's on your outfit layer.
Seems like the glamour system is based off the transmogrifying system from WoW, which was something I criticized a lot at the time. Why put the "skin" equipment on THE PARTICULAR PIECE OF GEAR, when you can put it in yourself? =\
Battlemage from Brayflox NM looks awesome on everything but Lalas. My SCH uses it as glamour. Male Hyur.
Needs more vanity options, current ones are getting boring, mostly just re-skins.
OP has a point though. Glamour system is great, but we have so so few options to glamour to. Gear in general does not stand out.
Some people could care less about their looks. I for one like to go out there and try all kinds of stuff. You often end up with something quite a few people use due to limited options.
When crafters can craft gear pieces (no stats, just amazing looking gear), it's good for the glamour system and for crafters! People will buy stuff that looks good, we like the glamour feature.
Admittedly, I may be mistaken but I'm almost positive EQ2 had that style of system in place before Rift.
That said, there's absolutely no sane reason to require a level 50 for access to the glamour system and I would personally love it if the class restrictions were removed from projecting followed by being able to dye all types of gear.
