How is what you're asking for not a work-around?
You're just asking for the game mechanics to do it for you.
You could easily do it yourself and no one will have to split any code over it at SE.
They can (gasp) work on something useful.
Honestly, I can't believe this is a legitimate concern.
There are plenty of classic FF games that you can single or multi target a Fire spell.
Firaga is just as classic as tabbing over enough to get your cursor blinking on all enemies.
There's no need to set macros if you just use Z or 1 macro (/aoe) before a spell.
If you want "Curaga" make CTRL+1 "Curaga" and /aoe Cure /aoe. I guarantee it wont take 20 seconds.

Instead, I could be single targeting a larger heal on a tank, and then using something like White Wind which hits the entire party for a lesser amount than Cure since they don't need as much healing.
Sounds like I am running away from responsibility AND difficulty right? Please... this is a UI mechanic that clearly is a barrier for better and more engaging gameplay.
There is little to no control for healers right now because it is literally just spam.
As far as DPS and casting attack spells. Its better but not by much. Because of the issue where only one group of mobs can yield EXP at one time, the whole concept of AOE is still broken.
Yeah, except mages aren't built to be just healers.
Anyone playing Conjurer or Thaumaturge and is just sitting there healing is a waste of a party member. If you are spam curing rather than being a productive member of your party, you are not playing to your potential. You have the highest damage output over time of any job in the game. Profundity & Spirit Dart is typically just as good as any other melee attack if not better. You're arguing for more complexity but you're perhaps playing too simply.
Someday a monster may come along that requires 1500 MP worth of healing, but right now there is no such thing.
There is no "Healer" class.
Which is exactly what it should do. Anything less is archaic or unfinished.
Have you ever played anything other than FFXI? That is the only MMO I've ever played that expects you to set up macros to play correctly. You basically have to set up your own actions if you don't want to push through menu driven nonsense all day.
