You may want to change that to "typical gear-grind MMO".
I've played Eve for 7 years now, and that interceptor is just as viable today as it was when it was first added, if not more so, the addition of new ship classes didn't automatically render older classes "obsolete".
It's called proper balance and good game design.
Horizontal Progression? Nahh, Vertical Progression? Nahh, Diagonal Progression gooooooooooooooooo
Too short sighted.
One poster gave EVE as an example, another is FFXI (yah, yah) until Abyssea came out. Gear didn't get thrown out after the next flavour of the month came in. Horizontal progression > Vertical progression. Even AF1 gear was useful for a while... not thrown away right when you hit 50.
I'm tempted to play again.
Coil turn 1~5 : requires i70 (drops i90/95)
Coil turn 6+ : requires i80 (drops i95/100) (drops crafting materials for i80, which can be melded)
This would allow for a lot more 'sway' in equipment. Currently the ilevel for accessories makes it very hard to use any crafted equipment and meet players ilevel requirements for content even when you over gear it. It would also static groups to balance out upgrades to make sure they're evenly distributed even if you're not upgrading to BiS.
How about you go back to WoW and its clones with your gear reset crap? "Worked months to get your gear and display your skill at being able to clear the hardest content? Sorry that guy whos played for a week has greens better than you"
WoW did it so good that from what I heard they actually REMOVED older expansion raids because even Blizzard knows that they become completely pointless.
It's poor game design to totally invalidate everything in a previous expansion as soon as a new one releases.
No 2.2 dungeon should drop gear above ilvl 80 (accessories mostly to supplement CT gear) and DAMN sure should not replace anything in BC 1-6.
Power creep is bad enough as it is as to make it appear so soon and in such a harsh way as the OP suggests. I can see them releasing i95 gear for Coil T6-9 and i100 for T10 in a similar way as it works now with T1-5, but increasing it even more wouldn't be wise at the moment and would require further changes and rebalancing in the future (stat inflation FTW).
Personally, horizontal progression (or at the very least "diagonal" progression, as some have called it) should be the way to go, relying on harder and more complex mechanics (and no, that doesn't mean OHKO AoE avoiding, specially here with the current issues with the delay) instead of just higher numbers. The whole "the boss hits harder but my armor mitigates more" is just weird, IMO, as we're always almost on the same ground as the enemies that we have to fight regardless of any higher numbers that we could get between different tiers of gear so, in the end, we're just getting new looks.
@OP
2.2 is a content patch, not an expansion.
