Desynthesis still worth investing? I stopped around Level 120ish
Desynthesis 180 rowena craft was the best way to get glass fiber on 3.0.
Think they will make some ressources "easy" with desynthesis on 4.0 too
If you continue on with some Adamantite i150 stuff... Apparently at a certain level, you can start desynthing the Replica Allagan / Replica High Allagan stuff. They drop from POTD en masse and are hopefully cheap enough on your server to do a chunk of them with Tinkers Bacon. They're considered three star desynths so that might help you.
Currently stuck at 200 Blacksmith Desynth. Splendor items give either no increase in skill or about a .10 increase each time and are VERY annoying to get.
Tomestone gear is also difficult to acquire. It seems like items in Stormblood also have 0.0% chance to desynth.
I honestly don't know what I should desynth to get from 200 to say, 250?
What method should I use??
Hello! I am about to level desynthesis from scratch.. still not decided which classes to pick! My main is white mage so i suppose weaver would be 1 choice for dungeon drops... i am also omnicrafter and plan to craft most things instead of buy from vendor... what about the rest 2?
Also is therr a guide or a spreadsheet that tell us how many items we will need for each level bracket. I know it cannot be a fixex number but an estimated one... like 30-40 etc..
have you tried desynthing the ilvl 200 weapons from the centurio seal vendor in ishgard? I know it might hurt to spend centurios on that but you really just need to get high enough to reliably desynth the ilvl 230 weapons for poetics. Consider trying a 230 now while using high quality bacon broth and tinker's calm. If the chance is acceptably high enough, that might just be your ticket. Also remember you can toss some cheap materia into anything that accepts materia for additional bonuses to desynth success chance.
i205 PvP gear works, but is slow for BSM since the items have higher costs than, say, belts for LTW. Be sure to meld them (the guaranteed slots at least) with crap materia.
After a few levels, you can do the extremely painful thing and use pentamelded r255 weapons while under the effects of HQ Tinker's Bacon. I don't know the math anymore since they changed things a lot, but pentamelding used to give you +25% and HQ Tinker's Bacon used to give you +15% for a total of +40%. That can bring something that's below 0% to like, 25%. I wish I had the new formulas so I could math out at what point that becomes the best way to level... I think at dSkill 205, your chance without buffs is exactly 0%, so with the above bonuses, you would have a 40% chance to desynth the r255 stuff, which isn't bad. At dSkill 200, your chances should be 27.5%, which is doable, but a little painful since pentamelding can take forever and you still have a good chance of getting nothing. At dSkill 215, that becomes a 50% chance, and from there, it only gets easier. I'd still pentameld up until your chances without pentamelding are at least 50%, but I have not done the math and don't know at what point pentamelding doesn't increase your chances enough for the cost.
If you use the above method, remember that ilvl is not the same as "rlvl" (the level of the recipe). Some i255 items are d255, but some are t258 (or whatever, I haven't done the math out). You can check by looking at the BSM crafting log - 4.0 items that are labeled as level 60 crafts are r255, and ones that are listed as level 61 crafts are r258. I think. I'm not in game right now to check.
Generally though, keep in mind how useful melding can be. A 5% increase per materia is still nice.
I need to do out the maths at some point and see if they changed the formula for 4.0 like they did when 3.0 came out. The above calculations are using the 3.0 formula.
Kinda stuck on what to level in Desynth, in ARR I got Cul to 100, but that was because I was doing a lot of fishing.
I didn't do anythign in HW, and so here I am now. Kinda unsure about the profitability ot the point of Desynthing tbh.
I dunno if desynthing is actually valuable at this point, but a little while ago at least, LTW could get you a leve item (Gagana Leather) which was selling on Faerie for 10-20k from desynthing 10k items bought from NPCs (i255 belts). I dunno what the market looks like now though, so that profitability bubble may have passed. WVR might have been similar with Ruby Silk, but I'm not sure of the profitability there.
Desynth won't be that great until they add new desynth-only items, or start requiring FC3/BC3/MCDs for endgame crafting again. For now, it's just a way to get something from weapons, armor, and/or accessories you get while leveling classes to 70.
Seeing that OP is still active, I'm wondering if this thread is ever going to be updated. I don't expect it to have SB stuff immediately, but the cap was raised well beyond what the guide covers even in HW and there's still really no guidance for those levels. In particular, now that the expansion is over, simply spamming the dungeons for gear is probably not a great option and I'd hope the guide would be point that out and offer alternatives, such as when and on what to use Centurio Seals and Tomestones of Poetics.
Why can't we desynth verity/lakshmi gear? Hope they will allow us to in 4.1
Babies are complicated. Toddlers, almost as much. I no longer have the free time I once did. I do plan to update the guide now that I'm playing FFXIV again (even if only at night), but it's far from a simple update, and I do not have a handle on the current economy. If you (or anyone else) are offering to help, that would be great. If not, it'll be updated slowly over time.
There is also not currently a strong reason to do desynths like there used to be in 2.x. You can break even on some items, but there are no longer any new desynth-only items, either glamour items like the old swimsuits and fish minion or crafting mats like the FC/BC/MC demis. Desynth has been seriously neglected even as they have made significant changes to ease leveling it. That makes it hard to be motivated to do a guide - I can, and will, do a leveling guide, but I don't currently have an answer to "why should I level desynth" beyond "because then you'll have higher level desynth."
I will be updating the LTW stuff first, from my own experiences. It's the only desynth I'm currently working on, personally. I don't know if I'll update the 1-100 leveling guides - things have changed, but I don't think enough to warrant a change to those. If someone wants to help with the leveling guides for other classes, please let me know.
You can never desynth the latest equipment. Verity items will be desynthable when the next set of tomestones comes out (and primals when the next set of primals comes out as Nixxe said).
EDIT: According to the 4.0 patch notes, desynth success rates have changed again. If anyone can give me a few datapoints to add to my own, it would be immensely helpful! Please give the name of the item desynthed, your chance to desynth it, your dSkill before desynthing it, and your dSkill gained from the desynth (if successful). I don't need many datapoints, just a few scattered ones, especially at the earlier levels. I mainly need to use them to confirm my equations.
So not to hijack the discussion, but has anybody found a use for Cul desynth? It was basically useless in HW and I haven't found anything so far in SB.
Check here for specifics on what you can get, but the only items from 4.0 that at least sort of have value are grade VI combat materia, which are likely infinitely easier to get via other methods (like tanking leveling roulettes). So, in other words, not really. =\
Thank you for this guide. I have a query - I recently returned to the game after playing 1.0 and 2.0. I've unlocked both Heavensward and the latest expansion, but I'm finding that I can only desynthesise items that belong to the original game, nothing from either expansion. [The item descriptions say they are desynthesisable, and they come up in the desynthesis dialogue box, but a big red message of "This item cannot be desynthesized" is shown at the item screen (for everything not in the original game)].
Have I missed a second set of quests to unlock the Heavensward items?
That is simply because you're desynth level is too low.
Thanks all - I'll keep levelling up - I was at 70 (culinarian) and couldn't understand why I wasn't able to do anything with the fish I was catching.
http://xivdb.com is a good reference, that lists the ilvl of a specific fish.
Would be nice if fish lvl and/or ilvl of seafood items was listed in the item description, in the actual game.
Just as a general note as I'm working on updating the OP - Looking into desynthable items in the gap between ~170 and ~240, I'm basically finding that there are only the two obvious options for non-CUL desynth. For ~170 to ~200, PvP i180 gear. For ~190 to ~220, PvP i205 gear. For ~220 to ~240, Poetics i230 gear. Then you can do the i255 stuff from SB, and use vendor/MB bought gear from there until you hit the SB endgame and have only dungeon drops to finish your way to the cap. There really aren't many/any other options, unless you are spamming HW dungeons for gear, which is extremely unreliable.
I still need more datapoints to get the new formula up, but it seems they extended the bonus desynth chance again, resulting in r230 gear having a success change of 80% at dSkill 230. That really helps with the gap. Also, you can desynth items that have an 80-100% chance and still get 0.7-1.0 dSkill with that gear, if you're in the right dSkill range. So, at least you get a level up almost every time you desynth, which helps close the gap.
More later.
That's fine. I think the 1-100 stuff is probably fine. Probably the only thing worth adding is that you can use Allied Seals to buy the old ilvl 100 stuff for very little, which makes it very good for leveling desynth, even relatively early. I think I started around 80. The accessories are like 25 seals and come in at least GSM, WVR, and LTW flavors, so even if you fail a bunch, it hardly matters. Poetics and Centurio Seals are also generally helpful from like 160-260. It's not going to be as fast as some people probably want, but I think it's the most frugal way, while also still being effective.
We'll see what they do with desynth, but at the moment I think the best reason to level desynth is in anticipation of future additions. After all, weren't FC/MC IIIs added in HW? We may see another addition in SB, even if desynth overall plays a smaller role than it used to. I know CUL can desynth some fish for combat VIs, which I guess is probably worth it to some people, though I haven't seen anything exciting in the few pieces of 300 gear I've desynthed with GSM.

Fieldcraft/Battlecraft Demimaterua III's and Mastercraft Demimaterua were introduced in the last few patches of ARR way before HW was released. Just an FYI :)
Thank you! That sounds like sound advice, and I'll include it in the RR->HW gap advice. The HW->SB gap is so easily passed with Wolf Marks though. Getting 1.00 points from a 100% chance desynth is really, really nice, especially if you're running Frontlines Roulette every day for those 40 Creation tomes. Takes patience, but it's working great for me and I'm on my second class doing it (GSM). Of course, it's better for some classes than others (LTW/GSM being the best, ARM being next best because shields, then WVR/BSM, then ALC/CRP who always suffer).
The 1-100 stuff should at least be edited for the new exp and success formulas. The new success formula is so generous! It's a 60% bonus from at least ~160 to ~245, and still a 50% bonus at 260. The bonus means that at dSkill = rlvl, you have an 80% chance at r160-r245 where before it was a 50% chance. Throw in Tinker's Bacon, and you have a 95% chance. Also, you gain about ~0.9 from the desynths at dSkill = rlvl, so that's nice too. I still don't have the new success rate and exp formulas completely nailed down, but this implies that the bonus will extend through the endgame this time.
Again, I could really use a few datapoints if anyone's willing to help out, especially in the 1-150 range! My classes are all too close together to get a good read on the overall formula.
Here's some desynth data around where I am.

Thanks for the data! This is exactly what I'm looking for.
I think it's interesting just how much experience you were getting with ARM, though you were doing desynths with significantly lower chance of success than you did with GSM. I'll have to try harder desynths to compare my classes (LTW/GSM/BSM), but if anyone has exp data for CRP/ALC (the two that I expect to have the biggest exp bonuses), it would really help!
Can you add a rough estimation of how many items will need for each leveling section? Not an exact number of course, but a rough estimation.. the reason is that i have all crafts leveled and want to craft many of these to save lot of gil :) but cannot craft one by one ;)
Thanks in advance
I have to ask. I've seen several people mention Poetics i230 gear. Where are you obtaining this because I have not seen any such gear in Mor Dhona at the Poetics vendor.
I have another question for you guys. My weaver is level 70 and my weaver desynth is around 222. I can reasonably desynth the Hailstorm Gloves of Casting/Healing (level 60, i230). However, I tried to desynth the Serge Apron (level 66, i230) and I can't. It is desynthesizable but my chance is 0. Why is this, considering the battle gloves are the same ilevel?
