So, 27.31% here are opposed to the idea.
I get bigger numbers than that trying to meld...
Huh that's weird...
I added the "yes" and the "no" votes of 476 (yes) and 130 (no), equalling 606 votes in total.
476:606=0,785; in percentage around 78,5%
130:606=0,215; in percentage around 21,5%
That would be 1/5 of votes against SSM and 4/5 of votes for it.
For an "inofficial poll" it sure has gotten a lot of attention. As of this posting, congrats on being in the top 5 longest threads in the English forum, Loggos! /clap
Give them some more time. The week is over for the reps so we won't see any word until Monday at the earliest. Plus if he's actually considering any of the ideas put forth then it may be a bit longer before anything at all is said. Hopefully the size of this thread and the attention it, and the poll, has received is enough to get noticed.
Can someone lock this thread please. Its lived long enough.
Why? Maybe the interest will cause a response from the devs. The length of the thread doesn't determine when it is shut down.
At first I wasn't too interested in the alternate names but I think there were some good ones in the thread. I like the handfasting/joining one particularly.
Just don't involve drinking the blood of the darkspawn and all will be good.
If you're aloud 90000 posts about 90000 different ideas you came up with that they should implement. We are aloud to sit here and discuss on this ONE topic to our hearts content.
It's just surprising someone whose constantly talking about how he wants the game changed his way could be so closed minded about a small change... oh wait...
I have to admit, considering how long this thread has been allowed to go on, I'd say the devs have a genuine interest in the players' thoughts on this subject. So at the very least it gives me some hope that the news of SSM is a serious consideration, rather than a placation.
I vote for not having just on the fact that it offends the least people AND it keeps people from "Facebook" marrying eachother.
How do you figure it offends the least people who play FFXIV, or are gamers in general? I mean those are the people the game concerns so in this case those are the opinions that matter. Over 75% of the votes here alone are for it and most gaming blogs/websites don't openly condemn other games that allow same sex relations.
I wouldn't be concerned with non-gamers making a huge deal about it, as they often do. FFXIV is so low key anyway that I doubt many would even notice.
Also as I said before, they don't have to announce it as allowing same sex marriage. They can take a more neutral stance and simply say they're allowing all players to get married. They don't have to openly support it if they simply don't restrict it. Or as many have suggested simply call it something different, for everyone. Completely avoids same sex "marriage".
Don't allow weddings at all in game. A very simple solution :p this MMO will be made for adventure and ass kicking, you are on the wrong category
I definitely agree with this. At least regarding of the Western player base I think many would not feel too delighted if inequality was implemented. After all quite a few were for SSM.
In general, when it comes to sensitive questions, and not directly regarded to this issue:
I think it is sad that one often thinks about offending those that are against something but rarely about offending those that support something (specially if it is human rights).
Applied to this game: I think it is possible to offend people either way by forbidding or allowing SSM.
Sure, SE can (and will) offend people by allowing SSM.
But it is not like no one will care if SSM is forbidden. I think there will be a few that are gonna be offended this way, as well.
I DO know that the Japanese culture is quite different but well, at least SE asked for it. So it is not entirely off the table.
About names I prefer handfasting as it is some kind of "marriage" too but it seems less "heavily connotated" than marriage (as in our culture we generally don't have handfasting - so it appears more like a distanced fantasy tradition even though it is not) and it has a more nature-spiritual way (comes from northern and middle European witch/shaman/religion cults). I think this is much more distanced from what we call marriage, still it is a union of very strong affection and it has a magical touch/feeling about it which suits into FFXIV I think.
How about we just call it marriage and leave it as is, don't you think if SE was really going to do something that controversial that they would have confirmed it by now? This extremely small, non-game play related thread has gone above and beyond any game related thread, it's a little bit ridiculous.
Yoshida asked for feedback on this. I didn't start this thread out of the blue.
And the size of this thread maybe just shows how important this is to a notable amount of NA/EU players.
It's not a notable amount of western players, it's a vocal minority. It won't bother me if it's in either way, I just find it disgusting that people find this to be more of an issue than anything game play related, more important than the EoaE trailer itself.
@ Warlock
Sorry, I guess I was not clear enough about this part (fixed it by now):
>>I think it is sad that one often thinks about offending those that are against something but rarely about offending those that support something (specially if it is human rights).<<
May bad, sorry! I mean this in a general context, not in specially this case.
I think it is in general a bit sad that - no matter what question is related (and no matter on what level, may it be communal, city related, national wide etc.) that there is a tendency about fearing offending those that are against something and not so much those that support something. At least this is how I have perceived the handling of sensitive questions personally.
I think I have already written this some times but I guess I have to do it again. I do not decline or ignore the cultural differences and I am AWARE of the different cultural view on this issue.
I considered this thread however as a place to voice opinions so despite the difficult issue it's not wrong to voice an opinion on this topic, even if it is not congruent with SE's home country.
@ Teuciont
It's not only about those who are LGBT themselves. It's about all those that support SSM in a game for whatever reason and as we have seen those reasons vary quite a bit.
Just thinking about the probably not so small amount of males playing females and that couldn't "marry" rl female friends/girlfriends/wives etc.
Getting engaged to pixels is serious business. Not. But it being added as an afterthought for people who think this way is fine as long as square focuses on the actual game and not the e-dating. And if it's your RL partner it shouldn't matter at all since you're already together IRL, geez.
It's not about hooking up, there are a lot of r/l couples that play the game. Marriage/weddings in a game is like 'fluff' content, adds to the whole RP aspect of MMORPG; I find that kind of thing pretty cool, I love community based stuff even if it doesn't revolve around the usual killing of small fuzzy animals but if you're not into that kind of thing it's ok, no one will force you to do it ^^
Marriage IS being implemented and we were asked for our opinions on this by Yoshi-P himself, it's a delicate topic so we've been trying to find a solution that works for everyone.
@Teuciont; again, we were asked for our feedback on it, so here it is :p. Just because we're talking about this doesn't mean we're not also using our energies to discuss the other aspects of ARR, this is after-all one of many topics on ARR in the forums.
This is the only topic on the front page that has more than 500 replies, other than unique media and maymays. And this thread was started 6 days ago. You've said what your opinion is multiple times, I don't get what you think telling the devs that you want same sex marriage for 104 pages is going to accomplish. They realize people want it, or they wouldn't have brought it up during the live letter.
We're discussing ideas on how to implement it without crushing people's toes (You could read some of the thread and see that^^), such as changing the name for example; having it player-run instead of what it was like early on in XI with the GMs so that SE wouldn't actually have to take a stance on it, then they could just say that 'well, players can get married with no restrictions'.
If you have any ideas feel free to contribute^^
Don't get me wrong. At least I don't want marriage to be the core of ARR. :p
And I agree that they have to focus on the important things that make the game FFXIV. Marriage is just a very minor side issue. BUT it is already on the way to be implemented so the rescources are already (planned to be) used on it.
So we are not asking to turn FFXIN into a dating game but to give feedback on this feature on which feedback was asked for.
I 100% support amazing fantasy adventure as well. :p
So you find the fact that people think marriage equality is important to be disgusting? I mean no one's said they think it's a bigger issue than everything else, it's just been discussed more. Also we don't know a whole lot about the actual game yet so all the other gameplay related discussions are little more than speculation.
This thread is discussion a very specific restriction in the marriage system that we know about and there's really nothing else to know about it. The current decision is to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples, that's a current fact. We're discussing what we think about that decision.
We're not here to really discuss whether marriage should be added or not because they've already announced it, it's a definite. They tend to not announce things that might be implemented, they announce things that will be implemented.
If you don't care about in game marriage.. then why are you posting in here?
As it has been stated about 100 times, Yoshida asked for our opinions on whether same sex marriage should be allowed.
This is a topic about whether it should be allowed or not.
Human rights has been picked up, because certain people have brought up real life morality - implying that homosexuality is immoral.
If you don't care about this issue, then don't bother posting because this thread isn't asking for your 'lol marriage in a game?' opinion.
It's a touchy subject with a lot of people. And I'm not against same sex marriage, I'm against people mocking it. I don't feel like seeing bride and groom pairs running around just for the sake of the benefits of the marriage in game. This is a serious subject world wide and I don't see how it can be treated casually here.
