People who defend her simply because she's trans are no better than people who attack her just because she's trans.
That being said, these takes of hers on Twitter are some of the biggest piles of shit I've seen and I finished Dawntrail MSQ. If I'm transphobic because I don't like her as a person nor as a voice actor, then so be it.
Honestly IMO even Disney’s “real” Gospel is Disney-fied tbh. The singers brought all their gospel chops to a Disney score. But on a scale of gospel to gospel inspired, Disney’s is closer to gospel compared to Smile, solely because the singer’s were gospel singers and what have you.
Also you can have a higher pitch and still get that soulfulness, I think my mind always goes to Fantasia (singer not Disney movie lol). But I’m p.sure she’s one of the, grew up singing in church, singers so even with the higher pitch she knows how to work her way around gospels.
Also! You mentioning there’s not a lot of the “off base” singing in Smile really puts in why it’s giving watered down Disney-fied gospel. And it kinda reminded me of the song analysed in this video https://youtu.be/2EXSyqw4VMw
And Smile is missing some of that “extra-ness” that could make it more than surface level gospel inspired.
All I have to say about this latest episode of the SB/WL saga is this....Thanks to @Syln for posting the link in another thread.
Enjoy
There's no need to apologies from anyone from this community. She is a big girl, she can handle the fight.
Dayam, I'm not really 100% on American norms, but surely saying black gospel is in and of itself racist?
Is it?
"You are racist!"
"I don't want to happily build a bomb train."
"My, so defensive, proves you're a racist."
The good ol' Kafka trap.
Also since I wanted to double check if that nonsense she posted was real, I went to her twitter and...

(I have an addon for twitter, hate the new layout)
Because, you know, a villainous character giving a speech it's yucky, but sounding like a bad imitation of latam dubs it's A-ok.
And that's where being trans becomes a weapon. Not because you're a piss poor person, not because you did a piss poor job, not because you are the racist, misogynist and any kind of those nasty things...no. It will come down to being trans, nothing else. And if I'm being honest, I hope they do fire her. Because no matter what, in this Square has my support. It won't make much of a difference, but this person needs to go.

Does she really think posting absolute garbage like that will be beneficial to her in any way, shape or form?
Or rather, does she even think at all????
I'm seriously starting to doubt the sanity of this...person. There is something wrong with her and it's showing. And I'm sure those awful takes aren't even the tip of the iceberg. She's gonna keep going until she has pulled the games name into the mud once and for all.
My only complaint about the VA is the low quality. This VA needs some lessons, go to some damn classes--something. I don't care who they are or what they identify as, I just want a good VA with good quality work. Someone who actually earned the part.
Honestly her recent insults towards the fanbase deserve a separate thread to spread visibility. This is originally a thread about the (alleged) death threats she's unfortunately (allegedly) received, followed by 80 pages of politics on trans issues.
Her horrible behaviour and lack of professionalism have little to nothing to do with her gender identity.
Eh, I would be worried about Kate abusing her power to ban people who end up making a thread about Sena though. Although if that does happen, you could use that to leverage for bigger news CC to pick it up. Hasn't Kate abused her power to shut down threads or ban people before? Read about it online but I have no evidence on that. If only Karious was here, pretty sure that dude knows more about that topic.
I think it's concerning how much this person is leaning into their role. Most VA's do the work, and then from time to time do little interviews or sometimes cameos. Wuk's actress though seems to think that they're one and the same, deciding themselves what Wuk should or should not say. That's not for the VA to decide, that's for the writers to decide. You're just there to read the lines you're told to read, not give any input on the actual character itself. The character isnt real. You are not your character.
The character you accepted the job to voice does not think anything that you think. The writer doesn't even know you.
I think it's this sort of ego driven delusion that's constantly feeding this steady decline in their mental health. They went from seemingly just seeing it as a neat little gig, to engaging with the fandom constantly, crying about money woes and wedging in their thoughts on how customers are allowed to feel about what they bought and played though as if their thoughts carried any weight to begin with, which they don't. You are Sena, in real life. Not WukLamant-P. Notice how all the other VA's got their check and kept it pushing. I don't see any of the others writing up "spicy takes" on characters in relation to their job. It's just so unprofessional and weird.
I don't really enjoy piling on, and Wuk Lamat's VA has had to deal with a number of extraordinarily awful interactions with fans that I would be remiss not to preface this with. I'm not sure if this is really the appropriate thread to post this in given some of the... rather unsavory comments people have made here that, frankly, they should be ashamed of; but I see no other relevant thread to discuss this issue in, especially considering this is already happening here.
That said, really can't ignore her recent tweet. I think that it is deeply unprofessional, as well as disingenuous, to purposefully tweet a very vague statement that "certain people" are somehow "racist" if they don't like Smile, and then further double down on the insidious initial tweet by following it with a dismissive and snarky "wow, weird how people are getting so defensive!" tweet. Honestly I think Smile is one of the worst songs in the whole game. The vocals are not good, and it is ill fitting for almost every scene its used in. Compared to its similar equivalents in things like Dragonsong, Revolutions, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and Flow I think it's astoundingly bad. While I am sure there are some people out there who see more similarities between "Smile" and Black Gospel, I really don't outside of the choir. I'm sure there are a very small, minute, tiny portion of players who are racist and connect this song to Black Gospel and therefore dislike it... but that number has got to be incredibly infinitesimal; and to be punching at shadows over what is functionally artificially generated outrage with pretty bombastic rhetoric is unprofessional at best, and deliberately inflammatory at worst.
I enjoyed Wuk Lamat as a character! She has the "Naruto" vibe that I've always thought was endearing. I also think her VA largely did a good job, and most of the complaints I have about Wuk's ENG voice are more an issue with voice direction than the VA! Unfortunately we live in an age where it's often hard to avoid certain things if you're in a fandom. Even though I don't follow her on eX-Twitter I still wind up seeing many of her tweets as they're reposted by mutuals, etc. and while she is no stranger to making heavy rhetoric, bombastic statements this really crosses a line for me. It's unfortunate to me, too, because I don't want my dislike of what a characters VA has said or done to color my perception of a character I otherwise genuinely like, but I think this really hit my threshold. I hope they recast Wuk Lamat in English if they intend to make more use of her, or just retire her character entirely.
I hope she sees the genuine pushback she's received for these tweets and takes it to heart, at least more than the sycophantic enablers who seem to think this kind of escalatory rhetoric is acceptable; and learns from this experience to understand that the words and language we use has meaning, engaging in this kind of rhetoric is helpful to absolutely no one even if you mean well.
I’d say the hole she’s digging keeps getting deeper but so far there’s no consequences happening so it seems more like she’s digging up gold so she just keeps going. Honestly calling Gaius a coloniser isn’t the worst, with what the Garleans original game plan was its par for the course. I’m more side-eying the “Wuk is a precious ray of sunshine so she’d never ever say anything bad.”
Is that a hint if we get more Wuk in the future it’s just gonna be more sunshine and rainbows and talk-no-jutsu? Guess we’re just gonna talk around the whole we killed your monarchs and installed a child king, or is that standard ruling under
precious cinnamon roll princesses?
Also since her usual voice is just un-accented Wuk Lamat her doing Gaius monologue “casually” doesn’t seem like it’d be different if she put on the Wuk voice? I didn’t listen to clip so grain of salt take. And also if it’s Gaius speech is bad why even do a casual take of it???
Speaking as a corpo drone: there's no consequences we've seen yet. It's only been a month, the bean counters are still getting together to figure out wtf just happened. They need to gather data, sort it (we're here atm), compile reports on strengths and weaknesses, then push it up the chain for meetings.
Wuk's divisive enough she alone is likely getting a specific report, which is independant of Bryer's behavior... initially. With Wuk being divisive as she is and Bryer throwing fuel on the fire, and potentially stepping on IP law in places, she's stapling herself to this mess.
It'll take time. Likely there's meetings right now specifically about localization due to the VA performance all around this time, and the suits are reviewing it at the moment more than likely.
At this point, it seems Sena has embraced the idea that 'all publicity is good publicity,' which allows her to make a series of hot takes unprofessionally with confidence.
This SO much.
It really seems that she is starting to confuse her own identity with the identity of the fictional character Wuk Lamat. Like they are linked or one and the same, somehow.
Adding to this, her followers on X aren't doing her any favors by calling HER Lamaty'i instead of Sena. Also, those same people will call you transphobic if you don't like Wuk Lamat. Not Sena...Wuk. And Wuk is certainly not trans.
There seems to be some serious confusion going on and it's almost creepy.
Well...definitly changing to german/ japanese voices now so that i never have to hear this thing again. If Square continues to work with Bryer ill quit after almost 10 years. Dont need to pay a sub to be insulted as racist, bigot, etc just because i dont like a song.
She'll probably end up dragging Kate down with her at this point. What a PR disaster, but what an entertaining events of drama though. Hopefully this keeps going strong, it's been fun to watch.
There was a thread on ShitpostFFXIV that just got locked about this. You can't speak about Sena in any of the FFXIV reddits, so it seems she's extremely protected there. You can only really talk about her here and 4chan.
Good. They're both birds of a feather, and removing both of them is better for the health of this game.
And nobody is surprised. It's been a very long time since even that side of XIV was allowed to have any teeth, instead of being just another hugbox.
I am of the mind that there's no reason to go after Sena, and the real '' culprit '' are the people who hired her to begin with. Of course you're going to take the job offered to you regardless whether you are fit for the job, there's zero question about it especially in this economy. But at this point Sena is becoming a bit mad with power and her perceived victim status, and her actions are justifiably under great deal of scrutiny. I don't think any company wants the kind of press where an employee is going '' if you don't like our product, you are transphobic, sexist, racist etc '', especially when Yoshi-P has said how important criticism and feedback is to the game's development (regardless of whether they are able to take all criticism into consideration due to time and budget constraints).
Probably a good thing in further expansions to reconsider hiring American talents, if this is how some of them act online. And that's just kind of balls for all the good American VA's who just took the job, got paid and that's it.
Okay I have been kinda fine towards her but recently she gave me a really bad taste in my mouth with that tweet about Smile. I dislike the song because something about it sounds... Off. Saying people are racist because they don't like it and then saying "are you trying to project? I didn't mean you" if someone gets annoyed is kinda bad.
Twitter has been bad especially for this expac cause I've had people tell me shit like "hey, you're racist cause you can't pronounce anything in Tural". My brother/sister in Hydaelyn, I can barely pronounce some things in Eorzea. And y'all didn't act like this when Thavnair was new...
On the racist slur, I am sure we will see a report of a Sena xeet saying "it was just a joke"
Also I'll say, as someone who identifies as nonbinary, I find when people use their gender identity as a weapon to stir stuff like this. I kinda was hesitant to post here in the first place because there are some FOUL people in here but I genuinely hate when someone is a nasty people and people let it go because "oh they are trans, it's okay" or whatever.
This pretty much pretty much nailed it. It feels Awkward to say it, but I have no issue with Sena in general just her behavior. Specifically more recent behavior, and it's weird in hindsight that I hesitated to say that, to Shibi's point.
So, I think this is why you're seeing so many "foul" opinions. Because people hesitate so much in speaking about someone's genuinely terrible, racist behaviour because they're a "protected" class (speaking in the loosest of terms here.) - people see no pushback towards something that should by all rights have pushback, so you see people from different cultures or beliefs pushing far harder than they would normallly to be heard.
Genuinely the best thing you can do to ensure that gay, bi, latino, black, trans, whatever else people are treated like everyone else, is to just treat them like everyone else, and stop trying to walk on eggshells because "Oh, I can't speak badly about them, they're (X)! - doing that kind of stuff just makes it worse.
I'm sorry but calling everyone racist for not liking smile or transphobic for not liking Dawn trail MC; bigot for not liking Dawn Trail; or better yet hounding a VA to quit their job just because they do not "deserve" it as a woman is not assuming the absolute worst that is Sena Bryer btw they hounded a female VA having their fans harass that VA so hard that this VA quit their job on that character; Sena basically made them not being able to land neither a M or F voice over role into a because the industry is transphobic I am not getting jobs when the VA industry in itself is already a tough space to be in Sena Bryer has such a victim mentality it would not surprise me if when YoshiP shelves wuk Lamat they go on a rampage for FFXIV being bigoted and transphobic misogynists.
