Wow the thread has become civilised, congrats ^^
My opinion is that I don't feel like there is anything special about any of the classes. I don't like having to build a classes using pieces from various classes to make something effective. I like having a set job and doing it to the best of my ability, in FFXIV I feel that to be the best DD I am going to have to level up a bunch of classes I don't care about just to get the skills and abilities needed to achieve that.
I also don't like that I feel like I am tied to a certain weapon and that I can't change it without it changing many other thing's. I liked in FFXI that on my DRK I had my trusty Scythe but I could bust out a Great Sword and close some huge light skill chains, or use a Great axe if I wanted to or any other weapon I could lay my hands on. I liked how weapon skills were unique to my weapon and my job in some cases.
But enough of that back to FFXIV and what I would like for the future of "classes". As much as I don't like the whole Armoury system I am prepared to include it in the direction that I hope the game takes.
What I hope they do to introduce the traditional jobs is to add them as advanced jobs as many have said. However there is a twist with my plan and I am sure many will hate it ^^
As many are aware the final Rank cap for this is is not going to be Rank 50 most likely it will be 99 eventually. Basically my idea will be when you hit Rank 50 on a class you open up 2 new jobs which you can level, you can do both if you please once you have unlocked them through a nice quest to introduce each one and the lore behind them. The jobs would be as follows:
GLA - Paladin and Dark Knight
MRD - Warrior and Berserker
PUG - Monk and Thief
ARC - Ranger and Corsair
LNC - Dragoon and Samurai
CON - White Mage and Black Mage
THM - Red Mage and Blue Mage??? (not sure for second one on THM^^)
Now I have called these jobs and not classes as this is what they will be, ACTUAL JOBS. Now the twist will be is that on all of these JOBS every skill and ability that they learn will be unique to it and none transferable to other jobs. You can still add every single skill and ability you have learnt from levelling all the base "classes" but nothing can be added from any actual job. So think of CON, THM, GLA, LNC, MRD, PUG and ARC as a huge sub job pool from which you can select skills and abilities from for your job. For example I could add Cure III from CON to a WAR but I could not add Souleater from DRK to WAR.
This would help add balance to the game at higher ranks and still allow a fair bit of freedom, creativity and help more with the lower to mid ranks.
Also with this I hope they would remove my pet peeve of being tied to a weapon, this would allow unique weapon skills for every weapon so that the jobs could have options for different situations much like I said earlier with DRK and Great Sword and Scythe.
Now one thing that give me hope for something like this was a question in the first player poll. Yoshi P. specifically stated that he had worded the question very carefully.
11. Would you welcome changes to FINAL FANTASY XIV that would drastically alter the rules already set in Eorzea?
Now we know 85.2% voted yes but Yoshi P. stated that he chose the word Eorzea and not FFXIV as Eorzea is only a small region of Hydaelyn.
I am really struggling to explain my thoughts here as I can't seem to find the right words to describe what I envision ; ; Its kind of like when in a movie when the main character is kind of like a street punk that is skilled at fighting and then he meets up with a master who gives him focus and direction and he becomes the best by using a combination of new skill's and old ones. I am sorry if that sounds so strange but I really can't think of a way to describe it ; ;
Maybe Eorzea is only the start of our adventure we are the street punk's and that as we move to new places within Hydaelyn we learn of new ways to advance our jobs to make us stronger, which is where the advanced jobs come in. They give us direction and focus on our journey up until then we were just kind of a jack of all trades. The idea is that the classes we have now are just beginner classes, maybe thats is why they are a bit all over the place, they need guidance to become true warriors worthy of saving Eorzea maybe even Hydaelyn. Maybe that is why some some animations on spells and things are a little meh because they are saving the good ones for our advanced classes to really wow us, well I can dream can't I ^^
Anyway that is my hope for FFXIV.
*casts Barfira* ^^
EDIT - Forgot to add that some skills may/will have to be moved around like Ancient Magic on CON could be moved to BLM only things like that, but not a huge amount only the staples for the jobs.

I would be fine if they changed the names to reflect more traditional FF classes.

I'm all for changing the classes. I miss my white mage, anyway. =\
I'd really rather the classes stay static and not flow into others than how they are now. All the classes are kind of jumbled together, and none of them really have definitive roles other than ranged attack and close attack. There needs to be more distinction.

alexia you were able to sum up more of my thoughts that i was able to. my thinking is base classes would be base and once the cap was upped you would then have to specialize in those classes, but i am fine with opening up multiple ways to go from there. i understand some do not like the jumbled classes and that is all it is in their opinion and that is fine to me. i just feel it allows my character to be unique in the fact that nobody across all servers probably has the same setup as my character. once they up it and if i decided to keep using pug i would start getting more pug only abilities and these base abilities would be used less and less as i leveled because they would become irrelevant.
i was just thinking any post cap abilities and any ability gotten through guild marks would be class exclusive as in thm would be able to use thm and the classes it forked into could use them also because they are still a branch of the thm class. to me that would be the best of both worlds instead of punishing people that did rank up a class to get an ability that is useful to them.
i 100% agree with you both in that i do not like the weapon equipped changes your class. i like the idea that you could equip a sword as a mrd and do a damage cast in battle, but why not be able to equip a cane also and perform the magic spell while the same class? isn't it the same thing? they'd just have to show an animation to show you unequip the pug knuckles and grab the wand in your posession. i am happy that now it is to where people can discuss ideas rationally in here instead of the flame fest it started as.

I think this thread sums up my ideas as well as everyone's ideas for creating character/class uniqueness without sacrificing effort and time put into the game thus far while also adding in even more options for customization. I'm sure not everyone agrees with this 100%, but this is a discussion thread after all and I think this provides a better base to discuss upon in either thread.

i can see the points in that thread, but really if class trees were what i wanted i'd go play rift and if i wanted to use sub jobs i would go play xi. the fact is i don't want to use those methods and prefer this method of being able to customize my character and not be limited in the role it can have. that is why i am on ffxiv not the other games.

Ah. Well first I would like to say thank you for keeping this post alive. Sadly I will be out of town for a week so this is my last post.
Just wanted to say to whoever posted about becoming level 99. It took FFXI 9 years to go that high. So don't get your hopes up. Heh. Well I'm out of here. Peace!

The Armoury system was created for fanboi's (imo). We fanbois know what skills a WHM has, A BLM has, a RDM has, a MNK has, a PLD has, ect, and what roles they play. What squeeeeeenix did was give us the tools, albeit not all the tools...yet, to make these archetype "jobs" by ourselves.
So SE should reiterate the fact that we don't have set "jobs" and post some builds to fit certain roles for those who need their hands held.

I think the real question is what value is in a name, how is a Dragoon different from a Lancer if they have the same skill set?
Tbh I would prefer them to keep the classes as they are but add additional advanced classes much like they did in FF Tactics.

I've gotten used to the current classes and jobs, and if they replaced them I would dearly miss them. If I wanted to go back to playing RDM/BLM or WAR then I'd go back to playing FFXI. Right now I love being archer yet using a skill from pugilist to recover health. I would not want to see too much change to classes after the redesign.
IF however, the change was simply to rename some classes to be more clearly recognizable (ie. the magic disciplines) I could go for that.
