It's a mechanic with a whole number of ways to wipe your entire team at a single slip up and it's quite hard to see who causes the wipe. It only takes one player being greedy, unfocused or just not that good at difficult mechanics to make it a wipefest. I like it as a mechanic, it's satisfying to see it go like clockwork with 8 people, but I can understand why it's a nightmare in PF.

It's not safe at all. Pretty much all of the responsibility is on orbs. Then inconsistent timings + greed is a recipe for disaster.

You have to go out and around the orb fast, otherwise you get hit by the cone or you change the orb trajectory too much. The trajectory is different if you go around the orb on the left side vs right side.
The rotating orb has a timing issue where if you rotate too fast the orb can catch up to your tower and if you rotate too slow you might not reach tower.
Even if you rotate correctly, the two orbs reach tower at inconsistent timings.

The timings are not consistent between two pulls even in the same party with the same orb/chain split.

Aye, we don't disagree on that. I just wouldn't trust PF to do significantly better with Ayatori or other strats, mainly because it's PF, there's always that one person and it's such a punishing mechanic on any mess up at all. But whether a small improvement or a big one, using the better strat would indeed be better.
PF's SoS EX strats irk me too, I feel there are more efficient ways such as cardinal lb3, better add strats and not sticking h2 all over the place for various mechanics, but that might be just me.

Fair point. Maybe it's easier on healer. Awful on uptime of course but I haven't really struggled to get orbs right myself. Think I've even messed up DF far more than Ilya orbs.
