You have to take a look at Japanese culture as a whole. Japan broke into modernity without giving up their culture or language, despite the fact that there was no reason for either two to continue to exist. They could have easily lost both-- When other nations rose, they gave up their myths, culture, languages and history to attain modernity (westernization) and locked up their past in museums and textbooks.
Japan on the other hand didn't. Today they are still Japan: tiny nation with the second largest economy. They have one exclusive language: Japanese. One exclusive ethnicity: Japanese. And one exclusive export: Japanese.
So it's no surprise that their products still somewhat lack social diversity. But here's the thing. In this global and mixed era we live in, can Japanese companies continue to create strictly Japanese mantras like before, or do they need to evolve like the rest of us in order to survive? In the videogaming sphere, you see that debate already quite clearly. ^^
Sorry for the derail~ I'm not a fanboi, I just love social studies lol. And took some Japanese studies in school so, the mindset is very different. I don't know if proud is a good word. But you have to understand that if the Japanese aren't vigilant, their culture would be wiped away in seconds by China, Europe and America.
But just look at FFXIII's Sazh. The opportunity to show their latest take on ethnic spice and they looked to 1980's Richard Pryor lol. They have some ways to go still...^^;
Let me tell you something... in the past. I used to laugh at people marrying people from inside game, well not actually laugh, but be bothered by it. It was not jealousy.. I am hardly a jealous person, I just did not get what the point was. This game like many sites has you interacting with human people; not character 3d modeled sprites. In the past I may have said wtf is up with people and relationships from in game, but not anymore... there has never been something wrong with it. You meet people through online, you get close, it is like a online dating site in a way, trust me just find out the people you are talking to are actually girls and you should be fine...
I never thought in a million years someone like me would say something like this.
this is weird
hmmmm? what is so weird a lot of people look for relations online.. in every mmorpg... a lot of eastern nations are like this.. I can name a few. Go on a japanese dating site, you will see that they are like that a lot, so I guess it is like that in other Asian countries also.
Step 1: Clarify Genders when you meet someone
Step 2: Behave to your online friends acording to their previously clarified gender
Step 3: Don't expect to date people from an online game, just make friends
Step 4: No surprises, no problem.
It's not so hard, if youre looking females (or males) to date via MMORPG then you don't get out so much, learn to balance your time, that's the end of it.
Oh god why are you making my brain hurt!! lol jk
Anyways, well props to them! If they wanted to be a "she" in real life and portrayed it through a female character (or vice versa....) then that's fine, I just really hoped that people would admit their real genders sooner, rather than leading us on >.<
It's the deception that bother me more I think, rather than knowing simply that a guy is playing as a female char. (vice versa) <-- sorry I feel like I have to keep saying that.
Don't we play games like this to escape our real lives/world and run to worlds like this? The hell people, quit ruining our fun. We already get enough of that from min-maxers turning this game and others like it into a bastard child between Calculus and Statistics.
