If you look at it that way you need a DOW/DOM class to even farm your materials if you gather everything on your own for crafting. they actually encourage you to play both types to work together rather then 1 style.

I usually argue more on stuff, but this...

I have seen many posts asking, "What happened to being able to play only as a Disciple of the Land or Hand?"
This was a statement from the previous team, and I am very sorry if any of you were under the impression that you can experience all aspects of FFXIV by playing only as a specific class. I would like to officially retract this statement. I'm very sorry for the confusion surrounding this.
Should have finished the quote
"Each class has its own unique abilities. Disciples of the Land have the ability to gather materials, Disciples of the Hand have the ability to create items and Disciples of War/Magic have the ability to challenge enemies. It is possible for FFXIV adventurers to experience all of these things or to ultimately play only as one class.
I would like adventurers to adventure in the world of FFXIV freely and for everybody to choose their main class however they like. We will continue to work hard toward developing and operating the game to maintain this kind of freedom of choice."
If this is true though, then you could wind up with more resources consumed by the instanced server that could present an issue. On the surface though, putting everything out in the open world instead of instanced areas actually sounds like an interesting approach to preserve resources for instanced content. Will be interesting to see how it is actually done.
Their stance on that has changed since then though... note that was posted in November of 2011. Will have to look back to see f it was in this thread or another, but someone had posted a another article where Yoshida-san had stated they had basically scrapped that aspect of DoH/DoL and were instead returning to the more typical focus of the DoW/DoM classes progressing the story.
Edit:
Oops... think it was actually the SAME article. If you continue to read further through that post, you come to this statement (note the part I bolded):
Note this was all stated in 2011---as in, it is nothing new---the game has been designed with a greater focus on battle classes since the reboot with v2.0.Quote:
Personally, I do not want to create this type of scenario and I don’t think any of you are looking for a FINAL FANTASY with a non-immersive scenario. This relates to what I was talking about in the recent Producer Letter LIVE when I said "If you want to follow the main storyline, you'll need to level up a battle class after 2.0."
This still ignores the possibility that Ishgard might still be locked after launch, requiring a main story quest to gain access. This isn't even naysaying, it's something that's happened several times now with some of the things we take for granted now. The armoury system needed we reach level 10 and do the level 10 class quest. To join a Company we had to do a quest. To ride a chocobo we needed to join a Company, raise up 2,000 seals and do a quest. Every primal at every level needed a quest to unlock. Everything has needed a quest before it was unlocked. If Ishgard doesn't then it will be the exception as the rule is well established by now.
Please make Vishnap actually hard again.
Vishap wasn't even hard, it just needed a level of cooperation on par with that of Labyrinth's Atomos fight. Chrysalis before it was harder, which made all the people complaining about how hard it was all the more mindboggling...
Here's a question...if the gates are opened to let us in...couldn't those same gates allow someone to sneak out into the rest of the world...and bring with them secrets unknown to us until we meet them...???
So an isolationist group that's kept their doors closed for generations out of fear that outsiders will steal their culture finally allow a select few people to be given their trust and the first thing you want to do is steal their culture.
You're the reason they don't want to let people in.
I disagree with this. The game has a focus. you cant be allowed to just opt out of the focus. The story is important to the game and you cant be allowed to skip it. Its not that long to do the story.
The story line was really worth doing... it didn't take long at all.
Plus they are increasing the XP granted by the ARR MSQs, so it will be even easier and take even less time.
Plus I do not understand why anyone would want to play HW but not ever play ARR.
However, be prepared for the inevitable "ARR was made so easy that new people in HW dungeons don't know how to play their class" complaints. There's always a downside, and there will always be complaints.
Lol. SE said at the announcement of Heavensward players would be required to finish the main scenario to access the new content. Apparently people skipped over that like they did the story itself. FF's are story driven games and there is a lot of work put into the story. Being able to craft and gather in this game allows a player to be self sufficient.
Do the story it doesn't take that long. Otherwise quit complaining.
No. This is not 1.0 where gathering and crafting were considered main classes. This is now 3.0 where combat and MSQ are king.
It's patch day folks. Tomorrow is early access. Better set aside some time to do your MSQ because the handout you all so desperately want is not happening. :^)
Lol this thread is still alive >_> but fyi EA tomorrow better work on that MSQ ;)
You don't have to spend International No Final Fantasy XIV Day arguing. You can go outside. Or play Final Fantasy XIII.
I just returned to my post launch character who did the initial story quest line. It took me around 4 days of dedicated quest completing to get to the last 5 quests of the main story. I do agree its kinda ridiculous that you have to finish Before the Dawn but I see why.
maintenance goes until 9pm here for me I believe, in california, because it started at 9pm. so hopefully I can play a little tonight and I have ALL day off tomorrow.
I managed to enter Coerthas and Mor Dhona even before the main story told me to, so why not Ishgard?
Give people access to the city at least? That way we could at least take a glimpse of Ishgard once we bought the expansion and somehow get the in touch with the new jobs? I'm fine not having to do the newer dungeons and raids until I finish MSQ. Also, the new zones would be useless to newbies anyway (who are at least lv 35 upon their first arrival to the Coerthas' Steps of Faith) since the mobs there would have been too powerful for them.
I'm also kinda thinking about this lore-wise. I'm not finished with the story yet so I'm guessing a bit here. Somehow in the progression of MSQ I assume you will be granted access to Ishgard because of your feats and recognition as a revered hero, Warrior of Light. Following that, Ishgard will allow only *one* person (you, or maybe the Scions too) access to their holy lands. It will make sense if Ishgard is instanced as you only see yourself there. But once you enter Ishgard, obviously you see hundreds of adventurers walking around. Sure they're also Warriors of Light in their respective stories, but painting a bigger picture in a role-playing sense where everyone is a humble adventurer then that might be kinda off. This would also be contrary to Ishgard's break from their isolationist policies and opening their gates to everyone.
But the point remains that because of the story it makes no sense at all to go to Ishgard. Furthermore the ishgardians wouldn't even let in outsiders, until certain events occur.
This is not 1.0. As much as I wish it were it's not so make the best of it. Do your story and let things be. It's a good one. I support SE with this decision. End of my story.
There are not armed guards outside of Coerthas or Mor Dhona preventing people from entering. The guards are only there to keep monsters out in the settlements in those two regions. The guards are like "whatever adventurer, it's your neck" and then swat down whatever thing that was trying to eat you chased you into the city.
As for the lore, the final battle "The Steps of Faith" pits you against a giant dragon, along with 7 others, but there are other battles going on on other fronts. All the other adventurers going into the city helped defend it against the dragons in one of those battles. Hence why Ishgard can get flooded with people and not break lore.
Hmm, in that regard, I wouldn't have been able to buy things from Revenant's Toll until after they mentioned to me the existence of Mor Dhona in the Main Story. This is a bit after the Garuda fight, but I fought her using i100 stuff I bought there.Quote:

In respect to the MSQ, I agree it won't make sense going there until certain events occur. But with respect to the bigger picture, it's fine.
With the release of Heavensward expansion, such events have already occurred and Ishgard has declared it has opened its gates to *everyone* (or did they? I dunno, but I think I read this in a synopsis somewhere), this means that any adventurer passing through the Steps of Faith will be allowed entry to the holy city. It's not like the guards will halt you if you're not the Chosen One.
Imagine a role-play scenario like this (juxtaposes as actual player scenario who just bought Heavensward):
*at the steps of faith*
Newb Adventurer A: So this is the revered holy city of Ishgard. I heard they are teaching outsiders the ways of the Dark Knight there.
Newb Adventurer B: Dark Knight? That sounds awesome! Where do we sign up?
Ishguard: Halt! Who goes there!
Newb Adventurer A: Greetings, honored guardsman of Ishgard. We have come from the distant lands of Limsa Lominsa in search of learning Ishgard's secret arts of the Dark Knight.
Ishguard: You shall not pass!
Newb Adventurer B: Whaaat? But your Holy See has declared open gates to everyone?!
Ishguard: Only the Warrior of Light may pass these sacred grounds! Now move along!
Newb Adventurer B: Aw bummer
Well, yeah I'm stretching this quite a bit. But I really feel we could at least get a bit of an immediate returns when we buy Heavensward. At this pace, I don't have reason to buy the expansion until I finish the MSQ first. Is that how it's supposed to be?
Not everyone. The gates are open to everyone who helped defend against the Dravonians in the last battle of 2.55. That includes the Warrior of Light and all the other adventurers who helped, of which there could have been thousands (but only 7 others present at Steps of Faith.)
If you haven't finished 2.55 you're not part of that group.
Hmm the Holy See should have included that clause...
Okay I understand the lore now. But then again this leaves me another concern: What reason should I buy Heavensward right now if I haven't finished MSQ yet? If nothing... then I'll just bite it and move on then. :(
Or I finish MSQ first, which leads me to buying Heavensward a few months after its release. Yes, I can speed through it over the weekend. No, I don't want to speed through it over the weekend and I have other stuff to do.
It takes 4 or 5 days to really grind out story mode... just do it. You're wasting more time fighting it. I did it in my trial period...
To be fair he's been registered since Oct 2014. I was registered last month... so, it shouldn't take THAT long.
Oh yes, I totally understand. (not sarcasm)
At this point, I'm not fighting it... but I concede.
Seeing as there's not much point in me getting Heavensward as of right now, the hype just got lost in me.
I'm taking a break for now. Then maybe get back again when I feel like it.
