I get the distinct impression that 90% of DPS players have no situational awareness whatsoever. I constantly see fights with completely dodgeable attacks where they just constantly get hit by every single one, even after explaining to them the tells to watch out for.

Stacking doesn't seem to be an issue. But the last party I joined could not comprehend "Move out of the way after stacking", and thus half or more of the party would just stand there and die to the stacked AoEs. Sometimes I can lose 4 or 5 gcds over the course of that first section. having to get out of them circles when there horrendously spread. And if everyone in that party is losing that same number of gcds because of the flare stars thats potentially the difference between getting to 86% when the boss drops or getting down to 82% maybe even less. Because it adds up to a lot of lost gcds.
Those extra few gcds can have a huge impact on whether or not the group skips those mechanics they're demanding to skip or doesnt skip them. so in that sense doing something as simple as flare stars properly can be a "big deal" -

Just need to vent sorry for the long wall of text.
I'm at the point where I just don't want to help anyone as a mentor anymore i've gotten so many rude replies in the last 2 dungeons, first I got Brayflox with a healer who would heal in Cleric Stance and the tank was dying over and over again. I asked them kindly (as they were a sprout) can you please get out of Cleric Stance and heal the tank (tank was their friend) he got all mad and said "we read online that Cleric Stance is the stance to be in the whole time...". I told them as a whm you can Regen and then Cleric Stance to help DPS it's not for healing in, but the whm and tank were adamant that it was indeed for healing, I pleaded with them with the tank saying "dude don't tell them how to play the game I have potions to remedy the situation now be quiet". Seriously...sigh I guess I pushed their buttons too much because I said to em that it's needed in end game/lvling as you can do what's called "stance dancing" and should be used when you learn it and feel comfortable, I got kicked after the 2nd boss.
Then I get Quarn normal, i'm healing, Pld tank and we get a brd and a blm, brd is a sprout, the brd is constantly using Mages Ballad I tell em that it lowers your damage and it's not needed since i'm at full MP and the blm has Transpose. Brd gets all mad and says "well my Blm friend likes the MP gain" I explained to them that they have Transpose so you gimping your dmg doesn't matter, they told me to relax it's not a speed run. I said well the blm needs to Fire II and if you Foes and I bane it will make the run more fun for you and you'll learn more about your class, oh boy I shouldn't of said that...because the bard and blm just exploded at me saying that "don't tell me how to play my class" and "we don't care just shut up already god you're annoying". We get to the last boss and I tell em to LB because the boss is at 12% or whatever with a <se.7> sound effect (so it get's their attention I only used the sound effect once) and the bard puts in caps "SHUT THE HELL UP AND LET ME PLAY", I just couldn't even I'm trying to help people.
In the end mentor roulette has been a terrible experience this week, I wasn't even being condescending I was doing what mentors are supposed to do and in the end i'm the bad guy? It honestly sucks so bad and makes me want to never do mentor roulette ever again, I know there's mentors who don't say anything or offer advice, but getting a group who kicks you and then the next one just yells at you. Man I'm pretty angry about it. -

Joined a Zurvan Ex clear party and we wipe to the adds multiple times. obviously people were complaining a ton about everything and how bad everyone else BUT themselves were bad yadda yadda. so i figured i'd just leave 'em and see if my SMN was even ready for zurvan by trying the SSS dummy. turns out i'm barely qualified for it under the ideal conditions of SSS.....i beat it, but with 9 seconds left on the clock. i guess it's back to practicing my rotation and stuff while i upgrade my ilvl then before attempting him as a dps again.

5. Every time you dodge sourthern cross during the tether phase you will have a perfect opening to manually refresh all of your DoTs before he casts the meteors.

I kind of have to agree with him. While Purification/Invigorate can give you a lot, and staggering them can keep you going, you will run out. The Arrow'd be better on a BLM, since to a point it can start making things a little rougher in the long run
It's kind of fun, though. my AST buddy and I play a game of 'how quickly can I kill my TP' where he gives me enhanced/extended arrows as often as he can -

Finally decided to clear Castrum and Praetorium so I could move on to post-story stuff. Now, I know most players don't enjoy these, or don't want to sit and wait for all the cutscenes or whatever, and really, I'm not invested enough to care, so I'm at least doing a favor and skipping all those. Castrum runs mostly ok. I'm usually not entirely clear what's happening or why, but mostly feels like a jumble of "break everything."
Praetorium was a bit more of a mess. Get to the point where I guess everyone's supposed to get in a magtek thing, I think? But it didn't work for me, or I didn't do a thing right, idk. Didn't seem to be working for a couple other members who may have also been running it first time, who knows. Party goes rushing off ahead, kinda expected the speed run mode, not terribly bothered, until they've gotten so far out of sight that I can't really follow along with whatever is supposed to happen. Cutscenes start triggering that show me being somewhere completely different, lols. Totally lost (along with a couple others) nbd, party is stuck waiting anyway, not really bothered if they want to leave folks behind.
But then the point that prompts the story. "BRD (me) lb pull." They're all sat at the next boss, waiting I guess for me to do something, completely oblivious to the fact that they left me behind 5 minutes ago. Fortunately for them I had stumbled into a battle and was in the process of dying, so I could quickly shortcut right to them. Still, though, bleh. Awful party experience.
Moral of the story, look, I'm new, but I know enough to know end-gamers don't want to deal with these runs, or just speed run everything in general regardless. But if you're stuck there with fresh players just trying to clear story, either make sure they're keeping up and know what's going on, or just keep going and clear the whole thing yourselves. You're not having fun here, and we're not having fun being rushed through.
Just gonna assume most in thread here wouldn't be quite that inconsiderate. I'm not saying I expect everyone to teach every new player. Just seemed like the least people could do is watch for players falling behind or getting lost. -

I've come here to rant.
I am levelling AST since we are in a bit of a dry content spell. Up to spamming Darkhold.
I like to consider myself as a patient person in a dungeon and I don't get angry at newer players, but this experience made me question the mentor system.
So I queue into DH on AST, Tank is a mentor, 2x DPS both have a plant icon (one new, one returning).
So at the start the tank wasn't holding the mobs in the crystalized field to protect from the eye's big AoE, that's fine, I just healed through it. No big deal, and when I had a spare minute I asked to pull it to the blue glowy stuff. (Didn't matter in the end as I pulled hate on most of the mobs). Same thing happened with the first boss - tank didn't pull it all the way into the blue stuff and it was invuln for a good 15-20 secs. The new player asked the tank to pull it in (I found that amusing.. A new player mentoring a mentor).
So we get to the orange crystals that shoot out AoE explosions periodically.. Tank has a few mobs and is sitting in the red circle. In addition to this, all of the Drake firebreath cones, any AoE on the ground, they won't even attempt to dodge them. I mean they won't even move from their spot. This in turn has me forced to cure bomb them fairly constantly, and it made me unable to toggle Cleric very often so I just didn't bother DPSing most pulls (which hurts my soul). With all of these curebombs I inevitably pulled a few mobs and they were interrupt spamming me. I mean we got through it with no full wipes, but it just baffles me.
How is this person a mentor and is unable to deal with the most basic level of combat mechanics in this game? I don't know their circumstance so they might have been unable to for some reason, I dunno, but I would have expected someone with a mentor status to actually *attempt* to move out of an AoE on the ground.
Totally fine with new players, especially in levelling dungeons and stuff. This kind of behaviour just baffled me coming from someone who is supposed to give new players advice. -

last night helping my friends do nidhogg steps of faith for first time so they can progress story on my whm.
Paladin pulls no stance holds him in weird position (meh I'm just picky but still) and no cooldowns and the scholar wasn't shielding. didn't even make it to adds first go. So I explain first stage thinking we could do it step by step not minding a few wipes. Tank completely ignores pulls no stance looses it to me on first medica 2 no cooldowns and half dps dead by add stage. also didn't listen to a word I said. So we kick for trolling cause clearly this guy must be messing around. New tank comes in pulls we get through adds it this point while I'm rezzing I notice the scholar was just dancing at start point ( I had wondered why it felt like there was no one helping me heal I just put it down to possible more the two new people taking lots of damage) turns out the tank was her husband and she was protesting. Was about to kick her for harassment but tank pulls so we manage to somehow do the entire fight with only a few people dying solo heal at least two new dps and the scholar wasting our lb when ever it hit lb 1 while dancing.
I felt pretty smug at the end XD Well done my two newbies for dealing with me getting angry on ts and having a melt down when I ran out of mana during och mourn screaming stack and mana song (they were both dragoons so no clue why I was yelling it at them but oh well XD) XD -

So running Thordan EX for birds, for some reason I see a lot of people who ragequit after 1 wipe, or ragequit after a successful clear with no wipes, possibly because a lot of people died.
I'm just wondering what these people are expecting. This is not a static party with voice chat and fine-point coordination. This is a bunch of random people who got together 5 minutes ago. If you're going to quit just because we took 10 whole minutes to clear a fight and ended up dying a lot, but without wiping, I don't even know what to say to that kind of ridiculous elitism, except for "good riddance". -

Why the hell would you que without taking the seconds it takes to make sure your ready? Why don't you take the 10 seconds or so to go to a repair merch and pay the measly 3k gil or so it'd take to repair?
They also called me out for bad tanking and said I wasn't supposed to pull big. For one I never lost hate and secondly, my pulls were never too much for the party even with a useless dps.
In a way, Kharma got back to them when they got turned to a mummy twice -

This one was just weird. I went on my alt yesterday for trials roulette and got Chrysalis as AST. My co healer was a SCH. I had about 6k? (I think?) health in my mixed 54-55 leveling gear. He had about 2.4 health synced down from level 60 230/240 gear. The MT had around 8k if I remember right.
The SCH died during orbs, I got him back up, weakness wore off, then we crossed over and I gave the party an AOE balance and used Lightspeed so the group had about 4 min Balance and I had a minute of lightspeed. The SCH died to the first meteor. I have no idea why... an Adlo might have saved him, not sure if he did it or not.
Getting that AOE balance out in time on the party for it to have that extended duration was a moment of "ooh, lucky!!" -

Just got out of Gubal HM with a NIN who literally never used a single ninjitsu other than Raiton and, from what I can tell, didn't use Shadow Fang, Mutilate, Dancing Edge or half their other skills. Halfway thru the dungeon, I figure I'll try and be nice "hey NIN, you know Huton is your main dps buff, right?"

You could, in theory, take 10 seconds and look up how to use it and/or what it does, but that would make too much sense. Instead, you'll just snap back because playing even remotely smart is too much trouble I see.
When people get new skills, do they just look at them and go "nah, that's too much trouble, probably not important" and just move on? I've said it before, I am in 100% agreement SE does a sloppy job of guiding players and makes it far too easy to get carried thru content, but at a certain point it's just willful ignorance on the part of the player.
Like I said though, I'm done trying to help. If you don't care to learn the basics of your class, that's on you. Why even bother trying to be helpful anymore if people just get mad at you? -

This is a decently old story but I didn't really want to post it anywhere until I was sure of what exact the Flying Press mechanic did on the final boss of Sohm Al (Hard).
Anyway, as one can imagine this is a story revolving around that particular boss. This was about the third or fourth day of patch release and I was running Sohm Al (Hard) for my second time ever on my EXDR. Composition was Tank (I don't recall which, but not too important) DRG SMN and SCH (me).
DRG gets targeted by Flying Press and continues to DPS as normal on the boss. I'm mentally going that the DRG should move to an edge so the puddles won't take up too much of the arena but doesn't. Okay, doesn't bug me too much - the fight is relatively new and people may still be getting used to things.
Puddle gets dropped, Tank moves a little bit just to give themselves more space but otherwise keeps the butt of the boss inside a pool.
Queue raging DRG about being unable to hit positionals and the like. DRG gets targetted by Flying Press and drops the pool again at the boss' fight location, and starts more raging as the tank doesn't really re-position the boss.
Second set of adds come out and I'm sorta tunneling DPS because I'm thinking about the mechanic in my head and going "Wait, doesn't the puddle drop directly on the target, why is it right under the boss" (I find out later that this is INDEED the correct, the puddle shows up UNDER the boss where they leap, but they don't leap on top of the player who's targeted, they leap just far enough to clip them with their circle and thus the puddle will always appear off centre from the target) and while this is going on the tank buster goes out while all the adds are out. I dunno if that's fully my fault or not to be honest but I will take most of the ownership because the tank buster in this boss fight really does hit like a truck and I'm still getting used to the fight and I'm also distracted about this mechanic because I was expecting puddles to drop under the player and not off-centre like it was.
Tank dies.
Welp, it's a mad scramble for me to keep people going at this point as I'm basically snapped back into reality. Let's just say what ensues is a Benny Hill-esqu run around as the boss goes around trying to kill everyone. Everyone else but me starts to drop but I manage to keep the party going. I probably fired a total of about 7-8 resurrections during all this and somehow never die myself and the DRG does call for a wipe (but thankfully doesn't respawn) and I eventually get the tank up high enough and shielded enough to survive Flying Press cleaves (because people were dying to residual AoEs from the move at this point) and get everyone else back up too in a small little island of safe space that has just enough room for myself and the summoner to stand outside of the Molten Silk AoEs without having to move at all. We win, and I get three commends for my COMPLETELY EXCELLENT HEALING *coughs softly* I swear I didn't let the tank die
DRG starts to tell how terrible the tank is and to be honest, I won't say the tank was terrible because the run leading up to this was awesome. Just the tank didn't have the situational awareness to move the boss out for positional. It happens.
I will call out the DRG for not taking responsibility for their own actions either since they effectively placed the first two puddles in a position that was a detriment to the melee (and pretty much taking up much more space than it should later on the fight) because he refused to move away from the boss too and thus exacerbated the situation further. You could even argue he was responsible for triggering himself because he refused to move on the first Flying Press.
And then I will call myself out for being stupid and getting the tank killed via tank buster on the second add phase. *Bops self* I've never let it happen again since though! Yay?
Bonus Side Story: To the Balmung NIN in Weeping City who thinks people in your party aren't looting on items on the community pool (4th chest) and the unceremoniously leaving after loot drops and accusing everyone in the party of being stupid - the contents of the 4th chest (minion, cards, crafting item) can be lotted on by all individuals in the alliance. There was a dead and AFK MCH in the other Alliance since Ozma's defeat who was entitled to the loot but wasn't rolling due to AFK-ness. The next time you decide it's a good idea to fling grand accusations of "not rolling on loot" in not-nice ways, you may want to re-examine WHY the item isn't being rolled on before opening your mouth. Might save ya getting into hot water later. -

Got out of a Dun Scaith with another AST in my party.
She was awesome. We never overlapped or overwrote AOE cards, we were both raising different targets every time when we had to, popped each other cards, rezzed each other almost immediately, and she did the LB while I stoneskinned her after a rez (I get her up, and then 4 dps dropped).
I wish I could have commed her several times.
Bonus: Non-DF, but MGS. Yesterday on the mini-Cacpot, I rolled 180...180...180. FFS. Fine. It happens. Today? 72...72...72.... -

One A12, I was paired with another AST, and I did a dumb of fat fingering my held AoE Arrow literally right after her AoE Balance when I'd meant to Aspected Helios. Mortification ensued. We get to the first boss and, since nobody bothered to explain, I do it myself. Only problem is that I'm on PS4 with no Keyboard, so I do my best so explain it in a few words.
It takes no longer than 40 seconds to type it, but the Ninja was already complaining.
The same thing happened at the second boss. Only about 30-40 seconds to explain it on chat, and yet, more complaints from the Ninja.
We get to the final boss, Nidhogg, and I quickly wrote something like "Protect the Dragoon and free your friends from Sable Price". That was all!
And the ninja: Dude, I'm not your friend.

So I was feeling SMN today. I queue Expert. 20 minutes later I finally get in to Baelsar's Wall, new Tank & Healer. WAR uses Deliverance? Okay....they have a lot of HP they must be geared. They proceed to pull all the way to the first gate....& the archers kill the healer & we wipe in 15 seconds. Okay mistakes were made no big deal. I check the Tank's gear....275 Alex Axe. That explains Deliverance I guess.
So round 2 we should pull le....oh the tank pulled to the same spot & the healer died from the same thing. Okay. It's totally fine....oh the healer left. Oh the tank did to. 20 minutes down the drain. For nothing. The full Ilvl 270 tank couldn't pull one less mob. Nope. Had to show off their epeen 3 mob group 270 Deliverance abilities even though it got the healer killed. Twice? Idk might've been a third time in there somewhere. Me & the random DRG expressed our frustration with what had happened & left.

Baelsar's Wall.
Going in on SCH (working on relic, although I main MNK nowadays. just want to finish the one I started).
Party: PLD/DRG/BLM.
The PLD has an i200 weapon, the rest of us are at i260. Ok, shouldn't be too bad. I'm kind of a bad DRK and I can hold aggro just enough with my own i200.
Well, through the trash pulls the PLD keeps losing aggro on things all over the place. The first boss is mainly tanked by not-the-PLD. Sometime before the second boss I go "hold on what is that animation I keep seeing?" After a bit of closer inspection I notice that the PLD first goes to empty MP on flash spam.
And then.
Goring Blade spam.
Not the combo. I mean pure uncomboed Goring Blade. No wonder the aggro was all over the place.
The PLD does not roll on earring drops which are a 15 ilvl upgrade. I am confused.
Between the later bosses I desperately try to get the PLD to use an aggro rotation, listing out the whole rotation with autotranslate, and indeed I see a Rage of Halone. Twice, uncomboed. No chat response. Wwwelp.
We make our way to the last boss with the DPS taking turns tanking and the PLD repeatedly DCing.
Once at the boss , after our brave little DRG takes a tankbuster to the face (I'm sorry, I was late on my Virus!) and I get him back up from the floor, the two DPS seem to slow down their damage just enough to not pull aggro. I didn't really have time to pay attention to it, but I think I stopped seeing Fire IVs and Geirskoguls on the boss at least (definitely used on collars and swords though). We clear without any... massive trouble in the end.
Leaves me wondering, did someone's bot screw up, or how was that player so... weird. Was his/her first time through (or at least successfully) but that doesn't explain the not rolling on gear - goring blade - etc. -

And to add another Baelsar's story here:
My first run was on my monk, with an FC friend summoner.
The Warrior we got insisted on staying in Deliverance. Cue wipes to the first pull, which he of course insisted on doing max size. A bit of Defiance and less pulling later we get through.
Well, he obviously didn't learn from that first encounter, and continued to Deliverance his way through life. He wouldn't turn Def on for anything that hadn't wiped us at least once, or until I'd held a boss for longer than he had. It was rather hilarious actually, never had I been so dreadful of seeing my Elixir Field crit things. I tanked half of the stuff in there, and held bosses for about a third of the fights. Blood for Blood was tempting, but I didn't want to give the poor healer a heart attack.
The last boss... We wiped twice to the following: I crit. I take aggro. I die to a tankbuster. Lionshead happens. We die to failed DPS checks due to a dead monk (didn't help that my friend had her controller suddenly start dying).
After two of these, the Warrior finally decided that he could use some Defiance some of the time. And no major issues were had.
Pls make Featherfoot into an aggro reduction skill. I never use it anyways, might as well have it have some use for a very specific situation like this.
