Established rules are good but they have to respect the child as individual who also has a right to privacy which you are extremely violating with installing a keylogger like you suggested earlier. This isnt about caring or not, this is about forcing your child into a surveilance state or being there for them as person of trust and taking a healthy interest in what they are doing in their free time while also respecting boundries. If you dont respect their boundries, what makes you think they will respect the boundries of others?

When you're under the age of 18, no you don't really. You can have privacy but your parents also have the right to know what you're doing under their roof. This is probably just going to be something we disagree on, this is what I experienced by my own parents growing up and I don't fault them for it. So, that's the last I'm going to speak on this particular point as it's just going to be a brick wall argument.

As an aside, regarding child protection in general: the more I read about this topic, the more I am convinced that wanting to erase ERP under the pretext of protecting children is a bad idea. Certainly well-intentioned (or a troll here, but it doesn't matter); but it risks doing more harm than good.

The aggressive ERP has one advantage: it is visible. Thus making it possible for a third party to intervene. Banning it altogether would not make it go away (... If there is one thing that is a cliché for the human species, it is that we always manage to introduce sex, whatever the content). On the other hand, it might make it transition faster in individual homes - or worse, on Discord, where SE has no authority.

And there, good luck protecting the child from these abuses. Excessive puritanism generally results in the comfort of those who feel assaulted by practices deemed deviant - since they can no longer see them. But rarely does it result in effective protection for those affected by the problem.

One cannot regulate a practice that has been forced underground.

ERP is cringe

Reading the wiki article "Think of the children" drags up a good point. Protecting children is always an important thing to do, but the question is how, which the article points out.

Child Rights. The appropriate protection is to ensure that children have and keep their rights as individuals, the right to no be used as free, excessive labour or enslaved, the right of bodily autonomy and to not be abused, the rights to getting education and information.

The protection some have brought up here is protection already covered in those rights, so what they are inadvertently advocating for is not the extension of children rights but rather the deprivation of everyone else's rights.

Also, let's replace the topic of protecting children, and rather protect women (not by giving them or anyone else rights) and see how that goes. To protect women, they have to covered up and/or separated from males or they run the risk of being abused, they cannot watch/participate in male activities or their purity will be corrupted...

It ends up being degrading and objectifying for well, everyone and does anything but protect.

Advocate for Rights. Rights that can't be used to infringe on others rights and don't rely on moral manipulation.

The internet is not something to blindly trust a kid with. Whether it's youtube, social media, or online video games. It's all well and good to "treat them as individuals with respect" but one has to remember kids are dumb and perhaps more dangerously where the internet is concerned, experimental.

Not everything can be monitored, true, but internet history, account history, account passwords, and parental controls should all be available to and used by a parent.

This is right, children DO have a right to privacy, but that privacy doesn't need to include things like the internet. If they want privacy, they can go into their room and be in private. If they want to use the internet, it's a shared computer in a shared location.

There is some nuance here and there's a way to handle it without putting up cameras in the child's room and having an "always open door" policy.

Once they're in high school they can have access to a computer in their room and hopefully they understand the dangers of online predators.
