WoW also "borrowed" a lot ...as in A LOT... of elements from Warhammer.
I have to agree. While there is lore within the game, some stolen right from actual non fiction history( hauk manor) crazy Rick women bathin I. Her maidens blood to prolong youth but over its a bit empty. I played everquest 2 before this for seven years and even though it was a continuation it still felt like a new beginning. Vast and vast amount of lore to the point it quite literally can fill multiple books. Even the dungeons had quest within it to explain further even having to go back to them even when at higher levels. Each race had a certain language they spoke and unless you learned it or was of that race you could not talk to those npcs . Where here everyone speeks the same common languege and with the same accent most if the time(few car people actually do have accents) but over all its blah! Nothing to delve deeper into it.
I'm just going to say that gobby speak is the best. Tongueflaps reach midlander ears?
Honestly I love the lore, but there was one part that made me cringe.
The ending. After a 5-6 year Umbral Era we're just going to -declare- it a new Astral Era? Is this really how this has worked in the past? Sorry, 5-6 years isn't really an "Era." An event, perhaps, but not an Era.
I was a bit surprised by that too, but... When or how exactly did you expected to end then?
While yes, there is lore about many things, one could argue about the quality and - more important - presentation of the lore.
No, this is not about "not wanting to read because people are lazy". Games are here to engage us and entertain.
A good game has the ability to convey the meaning of what's going without interrupting gameplay. WoW does a good job of it, most of the time. You get a good idea of why you are doing a quest or what its implications are and how the different quests connect (case in point: the whole Stonetalon Mountain Horde questline). That was without journal reading. I didn't have the feeling that something lacks, because the game showed me. Show, don't tell.
FF lacks this accessability. While one might argue about the "quality" of the lore (which is entirely subjective, this thread serves as a good showcase), i think the problems some people (like the OP) have with the lore aren't about the quality or quantity, but simply about how its presented.
Cutscenes, entrys on strange websites, forumtranslations from japanese stuff, a bluray (pardon me but wtf?), and NPC Smalltalk, which only pops up when you walk next to a specific NPC.
These all take the control of you away and lessen investment into the actions that happen on screen. There's a reason Heavy Rain works, because it simulates control while basically playing a cutscene. The aforementioned stuff is all very inaccessable, forces me to stop playing the game.
Brayflox is actually a good example. I still have no clue on why i should get cheese or the other stuff. Nor do i care afterwards.
I played the story, hoping for a Big Bang of Awesome to come (as prophesized by my guildmates). Credits rolled in the end and the only big bang was when our MTs computer shorted out.
So, for disclaimers sake: I wanted to care about the story. Seriously wanted. But it never hooked me, reading or not. Thats a problem, obviously. And now i want to get into roleplaying in this game which... is hard since there isn't much to go with on how the people on Eorzea act, what their customs are, their history.
It would help if there'd be a wiki like wowwiki.com but somehow i'm pessimistic about that happening. Researching is something i like (hence i am here and my concerned first post)

Someone in my FC is a huge lore addict and knows literally EVERY SINGLE LAST DETAIL on the lore in this game lol...seriously..haha and well, the amount of lore in this game is actually impressive. I didn't mind the story...I didn't like how we killed off everyone so fast but hey I am sure SE has way more in store for us :o
Its not hard to steer an attempted troll OP into a reasonable discussion.
The lore is very rich, and good. It's just coupled with bland and poorly-directed cut-scenes. The best of it is the more implicit stuff though.
Sadly many people just come for the grind and progression. Case in point, my friend joined a month after me and has already gone through T4. I've only done T1 (not in a static, he is on our FC static). The other night, I asked: "Do you even know why you're in coil (story wise)?" His response: "Nope, not a clue."
I wonder how many people could actually answer that question.
I honestly wish to know what's the point of playing a game like this when you do not care about the lore or the lore cheated by your character taking part in the world! I love lore. More deeper the story the more better I find myself within the world but if the mind set is just to kill the head boss the why even play?
The game has a lot of fake lore. A good example is the 80 Sins of Sasamo thread. You walk outside the city, see the area called 80 Sins; note that there appears to be 80 steps; associate steps with hardship... and you have an implied lore chunk that at some point there was a Lala named Sasamo who committed some atrocity and constructed and/or drudged the steps as an act of penance. Although there is no actual Lore, just the implication of lore.
It is a pretty big and beautiful world that have given us and one of the most detailed worlds that I have had the pleasure of playing in, but the lore is kind of lacking in my opinion. Just undeveloped if anything; I am sure they will flush it out. Although I am still waiting to hear why Bahamut decided to cancel the apocalypse.
Ps: WoW got to cheat because its been around since the 90s? I bought Final Fantasy back in the 80s for my first Nintendo. Crystals, Espers, Cids - there is a wide base of shared lore in the FF universe :p
Ironically enough, the lore as it stands at the moment in ARR is far more fleshed out and developed than what it was like right at the start of 1.0 service, or even after six months.
At that stage, there was virtually, nothing explained about the world you were in. Something about the Echo and how ten years earlier a place called Ala Mhigo had been invaded by an evil empire called Garlemald in the north east and how adventurers were basically unemployed soldiers given odd-jobs to keep them occupied, and some basic window dressing about the three cities you start in. But that was it.
I remember when I first started in 1.0, Gridania was my starting city, and as I did the first few story quests (because at that stage there wasn't even sidequests available), I couldn't figure out for the life of me just exactly what Gridania's society was supposed to be. A forest commune of tree-hugging hippy mages, archers and xenophobic stuck-up pikemen?
It was only until after Yoshi took over as Producer and Director, and successive patches finally started the world-building that should have been there from the start did things improve considerably. And ARR is only continuing that. :)
And once the 1.0 forums were added and certain members here started debating and arguing plot details did the questions finally start getting, um, answers. ;) Especially when the Lore section was added and a certain ahriman loremaster start clarifying things here. :D So yeah, thanks to people like Catapult, Moose, Ferne and others I can't remember, did the game's lore finally start making sense (although certain ideas and theories in 1.0 have since been completely blown out of the water by revelations in ARR, and I love it!). :D
So yes, the original poster's statement that FFXIV's lore is 'bad' is quite simply, subjective.
