Tanking isn't that hard as long as you remember a few basic tenets:Find someone in your FC or on the forums, or reddit or whatever and pick their brain. The key to being a good tank is knowledge.
- Mark your targets
- Switch occassionally to build AoE aggro (or use abilities like Flash)
- Read up a bit before entering a fight you've never done
- And most importantly, don't be afraid to ask for help.
That is not how a protector of heroes should behave.
@ Welsper59 - I love your lion gif :D
On topic: Stories like there are really depressing. I never really understand why people do stuff like this in games.
If someone ever tells me to leave a group for not knowing a battle like the back of my hand when it's my first time doing it, I'll just say the 2 greatest words in the English language:
Make me.
As much as I hate to admit it, FFXIV is turning to be one of the most toxic communities I've had the displeasure to experience.
People complaining about other players watching cutscenes, being a jerk through the Duty Finder, elitism, self-centered groups that just care about themselves, etc.
Back in FFXI if you did something like that, your reputation followed you for quite some time.
Man, almost in all dungeon runs, majority of the assholes are either tank or healers. Is it because they are so scarce that they think they should feel superior than everyone else?
In my experience, tanks are the ones who mostly complain when one of us makes a slight mistake.
I do admit that there are dpsers out there who are idiots, I admit I was also one of them. Before i dont even know how to managr my aggro.
What I mean is that, in most runs, its the tanks and healers who always leaves after the first wipe. I mean come on, nobody is perfect, all are bound to wipe atleast once or twice
What I said goes both ways. They do that because of what they've been through already (not saying that I personally do this) and make the same assumptions about everyone else. And then of course, there's the actual flat out assholes but, again, that's hardly limited to healers/tanks. I had a praetorium run where one of the dps just ran around grabbing all the enemies he could and die. Did this twice and left. No one said a thing, and all started leaving. Some dps seeking with "join in progress" appeared in a group with only 2 other people still there. They too got screwed over by this.
I'm sick of those trolls who quit from irreplaceable duties, such as Garuda and etc.
banning quitters more than 15 mins will effect people who actually got disconnected so the disconnect ratio should be a good way to solve this. if you have high quit rate, you'll need to wait longer to join duties.
Screenshot and report. Always. That's griefing.
I felt this thread needed something positive. The other night while I was leveling up my botany, I saw someone shouting for Tam Tara -- needed a tank. I remember having to wait for a bit for that part of my story quests. I was going to call it quits for the night, when I saw the same person shouting still. Must have been 45 minutes. Switched my equipment set, sent him a tell and I tanked the run for them. The same thing happened for my Tam Tara run, except with a healer. There are kind people out there too.
In some duties, you cannot replace someone who leaves. A good example is Garuda (Hard). In some duties, the temporary duty 'leader' will be prompted to replace any player who leaves. In other duties, such as Garuda (Hard), the duty leader is not given this option. So, if one person leaves, everyone else is quite literally screwed. Everyone has to wait for the queue again. I can't tell you how many times I've joined a Garuda (Hard) run only to witness someone leave the second the duty starts because they're not satisfied with a tank's gear even before we make the pull.
I've had to put up with DPS running a dungeon in only that event bikini gear, nothing else equipped but a weapon. And that is at level 50.
Tools are everywhere.
Lucky escape if you ask me. Would you really want to spend up to 2 hrs with that jack ass? XD
Saying that, the other day I had a dungeon and was the tanks 1st time. So i was explaining the tactics. Well the whm and drg had a tantrum and decided to say "afk 30 mins" anyway needless to say it was fun MPKing once again! Made my day tbh. ^_^
This is why I make sure to click on join in progress on dungeons I've done before. One group told me their tank left after fulfilling his FC hunting log or whatever. Just terrible.
I just want the OP to know that not all tanks are jerks like this. I am a 46 Paladin, I have never went AFK, never asked how long it took my DPS to get a DF, and then gloat about my near immediate parties. I have not insulted my healer for being poor at their job, I offer them guidance, and if they do not take it, then it is only 90 minutes max I have to deal with them. I do get frustrated with DPS who cannot stick to the mobs I am marking and then I have to try to switch back and forth between 2 mobs to keep hate, rather than spamming flash to hold add aggro as we 1 by 1 them. I do not insult them, I offer suggestions, if they take my suggestions and have more situation awareness, than I have helped improve a future parties experience with them. If they don't, well then I know how to hold just enough hate to let them take a lesson in death-ga but not lose my other party members.
I know that tanks are a commodity in DF, and I have personally done dungeons like Stone Vigil 15 times, I won it on my first go through, but hey, when quests run out and FATE is lagging like crazy, I do dungeons for experience points. I get points and gear and on the other side of the coin, I am helping more DPS get through these dungeons. Win-win.
I also have never quite because of 1 wipe, or 100 wipes. I really hate the people who quit after a wipe, it tells me you are unable to adapt and have an entitlement issue. I really hate when people screw up and quit.
There are plenty of good tanks, as in good people as well, out there.
we need a blackwall of the shame for this sort of people... really.
they don't make the community better and worst make the game for the other horrible... no reason to hold on against this sort of person.
I wonder why so many people don't play tanks or healers, they are fun jobs. Best part is that you are needed everywhere, and after playing dps you know how a good tank plays and how a bad tank plays. Level more tanks guys! it's really fun and awesome to be wanted in a videogame.... *cries in corner*
My lone bad experience to date was with a dps job. I found a WP group through the DF (as SMN), and the group decided we were going to do a speed run. So everyone ran off and reached the first boss, whereupon the other dps - a BLM - ran over to one of the corners near the first boss. That activated the boss, which meant a party wipe instead of a raise for the tank. Immediately after this little stunt, the BLM started to complain over and over and over again about how the tank was complete crap, didn't know his job, didn't have the right gear, etc... Finally, after we reached the first boss again, the healer got annoyed enough to leave the party. And that was the end of that.
exactly. those are not 'wow-players'. those are MMO-hoppers. they play a game, they get bored, they troll. and then they're seen in the next game.
we really shouldn't give them so much power. most people you encounter in this game are nice. the rotten ones just tend to spoil the fun for everyone.
and I definitely agree that someone should make a wall of shame website for this game. maybe even sort by 'dungeon finder cluster' so we can see which servers we are potentially getting players from, see a player on that list, and just leave the group right away ;)
A lot of tanks/healers don't click the join party in progress because they have fast queues. I was on my healer and our groups tank just quit the group after the first pull for no reason at all. I stuck around for the DPS' benefit because I main a BLM so I know we have long queue times. In 10 minutes there was not a single tank that joined in progress so the DPS just left the group. Kind of felt bad for them.
I play tank, even when I've been yelled at and complained about by DPS I still wouldn't consider doing something like this. Sorry there was a huge jerk out there making it his job to ruin your game time OP. If you can report this, it's total BS for anyone to behave like this!
I main a tank myself and this kind of stuff is really sad to see.
But thankfully we do have something of a method for public shaming; The Lodestone. Post blog entries about the people you play with. If they're jerks shame them, if they're spectacular you should praise them!
Truth be told there are times when I get frustrated with some DPS being pushy and demanding things but even if I'm pushed to the point of leaving I'll at least give a few attempts to try and defuse the situation before leaving and re-queueing.
That is intentional hindering of your game play make sure you get a screenie next time and report.
It's not just tanks. As a healer myself Ive had the pleasure of dealing with other asshat healers. In one instance a healer started calling me a noob learn to heal you're a fuckig fag. Etc etc etc. because I was not playing his rotation. I've done the run numerous times and have never lost.
All the time he was degrading my "skills" and making himself out to be a god. I'm having to solo heal a 8 man run by myself. And then when someone dies. He says if it was me they would have lived. Being the person I am. I even healed him when he got aoe standing beside the tank on purpose just to take dmg.
The worst part is that even though he literally never cased a single cure. When we died on the second boss. Everyone blamed me for the loss. Because you know apparently a single healer can cure 2 tanks 4 DPS taking 14 adds solo and themselves from aggro. But this happens.
I asked numerous times to drop it and he never let it go. Gay. L2heal. You suck. I'm better. I use to love ff mmo's but honestly it's drawing a shitty crowd.
2nd edit. Also DF with a random tank. Ok guys I'm gonna AfK while you do the run. Right the. Deal with it. My que is instant. Lol /AfK. This literally happened.
Oh you can't kick in duty finder cause it would be rude. GG yoshi. You have created the ultimate troll bait game.
Maybe they should fix it so that nobody can leave an instance unless the whole party agrees. I guess it wouldn't stop people from just turning off thier computer if they really wanted to be lame, although maybe a manditory "you are still logged in" error for half an hour would take care of that.
Sorry to hear this story and many others like it.
I'm sorry that tank is giving the rest of us a bad name. Here's hoping we can friend players cross-server and set up LSs along with blacklisting tools we don't want to be paired with by the DF. I value my party members. Hope to see you in a dungeon one day.
What an asshat.
I had a situation the other day when I was tanking Haukke Manor. We get to the final boss, and about halfway through the fight, my ISP's connection goes haywire and the town loses internet for a couple of hours. My only hope is that they didn't get angry over something I had no control over.
