Why no regional servers?

Not true at all. I live in Japan and experience the same lag as everyone else. It's not so much the ping rate or server/client transfer rate but rather how slow the servers are. That and how many requests the servers get per second. Remember when the game first came out and it would take 5 seconds to exchange items between you and your retainer? Or changing gear? Some of that went client side, but mostly optimization's were made server side. Something that should have been taken care of in beta.

I'm still enjoying the game SE and as a software developer myself I know how long this stuff takes.

International servers are great idea to interact with everyone in the world. Eventually chat translation will get better. So I could be messaging you in German and you wouldn't even know.

Sorry but pretty sure the majority of the groups were started with that simple statement simply because you weren't sure if they spoke your language or not. But apparently since you can experience the Eiffel Tower or fine sushi cuisine through that kind of interaction, I guess I'll just say I'm envious of you.

Most server "lag" is not because of location, it's how SE has the servers set up. Hell for the most part I hardly ever see any server latency anyways...and I live in Canada.

Also not as many people play the game so that "helps". I would like to see an accurate number of how many people still actively play.

Thank you for clarifying this for everybody, since a lot of people in the English forums think SE is purposely treating them like a red headed step child because they are so important lol. Lag in Japan, Lag everywhere. Even the devs said xiv weighs down on their pcs also, graphically and otherwise. So its a problem that everyone has from the devs to the players, worldwide.

Nothing pisses me off more then not being able to play with a friend from EU just because I have the NA copy. Global FTW. My first language is also not English, I wonder if that gives me an other perspective. I know exactly what it's like to be among a whole group of people I barely or don't understand at all and I've learned to just deal with it and use 'sign' language. The auto translator is a lot like signaling meaning to people and making faces at them. Call me weird I think it's fantastic we get to interact with people from everywhere.

It's funny how you only ever fixate on the minor points of an argument.

If there are twice as many people on my server who can speak my language, that increases the change of meeting a kindred soul, right? If I can't talk to half the people on my server, that decreases my chance of meeting fun people, right? I don't see how this requires anything other than common sense to figure out, let alone statistical analysis.

Just because they have regional servers doesn't mean they have to be region-locked.

In this day and age it is easy enough to out-source to servers in other countries.

And there should be servers around the globe to decrease latency issues. If you have 1000ms latency to servers in japan then everything you do will be delayed by minimum of one second. That's ridiculous.

Someone needs to stop using dialup if they have a 1000ms ping

Yeah seriously. A good ping is <100, 100-400 is generally tolerable, 400+ is bad. With a good connection that's less than a 10th of a second.

Even 400 isn't even that bad for an MMO. As long as you're not doing PvP, even pings up to 5-600 are tolerable (if they balance it correctly with input delay even better).

First of all, you're not necessarily restricted to *your language* There's one lovely option named "learning languages" :D
The fact that you speak english doesn't mean that that lovely option is useless to you. That's one of the advantags of an international environment, instead of locking yourself up in your own little national ghetto.
Also, you're making up percentages, as you don't know how many non native english speakers actually speak english.

You're missing the point. Even if the servers aren't region locked, people have to *chose* between their friends from a region, and those from other regions. It's obsolete, and in a globalized internet where people make friends *everywhere* it's an extremely dumb and counterproductive option.

What's obsolete is waiting 2 seconds for your attacks to fire.

And not everyone has time to brush up on their Japanese and Italian that they stopped learning when they left highschool just because of some unnecessary hurdle in an MMO.

Interesting. My skills fire instantly with the last patch, and they never got even near 2 seconds since when they implemented the new server structure (mind you, not even one second) someone has a bad connection, or is using some serious hyperbole.

Nope. I live in a real world where people learn foreign languages because it's useful. A videogame helping to improve them is definitely an added bonus.

Or perhaps that segregated servers are stagnant. What happens when I play during "Lowtime" on the NA server but can't play with anyone because the majority of the NA world sleeps?

Too many issues with players being on at odd times, I think it's a downright silly thing segregated servers. Hell in XI there was little to no "Server lag" and in XIV I still see little server lag and we have been told this is all server side issues not regional issues.

The reason we take so long to do ____ is because all the actions are server side instead of client side, they have been slowly migrating functions to client side for much faster feedback.

I care about the fact for complex situations like raids or group missions, they require more communication than what the translator can provide. To suggest "go learn a new language" to play a game is ludicrous. When you put all players of different languages into one server, you're effectively limiting the pool of players you can interact with in these kind of situations.

I don't honestly see the issue with latency so I agree with you there. This only applied to when you had to claim NM's over others when it came to 11, and they fixed it so you couldn't claim the mobs till after a certain time after it spawned.

Cross-server groups for dungeons which is a hot topic is one way to alleviate non prime time players from not being able to group. Really though, its the abysmal population because of the state of this game that's really the problem. In more populated games I've never really had a problem getting groups even at odd hours.

How can you not see server lag in FFXI or FFXIV? Do you live inside the servers or something?

From Abriael post I got it was like, "a person learning another language...can find friends from another country...and practice the language they are speaking...while playing a video game they like to play." I do this. If there were regional servers it'd take away to chat with French/Quebecois people, and I would not get to practice French as often as I regularly do. It's awesome when a game has that. You can't hate on people for being more educated and worldly, you can hate on someone because they want to talk to people from other countries to improve a language they already started learning on their own, these are all good goals, to not like these are counterproductive. You don't have to learn another language, but if this game came out this way, and people use these functions, and this is a status quo for SE (FFXI), then deal with it.

plus half the reason JPs don't want to play with us is true, most western mmo players are greedy and immature.

You're still implying that most people need the translator to communicate. Which is laughable. A vast majority of non-english native speakers that play MMORPGs *do* speak english.
Add to that the fact that many english speakers learn other languages *bcause it's useful* (and not just to play the game), and you get a much better picture than what you're trying to show, while trying very hard to misconstrue what I say, by the way.

Most jps who played XI know basic english for strategy in the game, and certain function of a party. The other day in XI, this guy asked "why are you guys saying WC, we're not euros lol" and everyone /facepalmed. Most mmo terminology came from EQ and that age of mmos, and so it was taken directly to Japan. [proven by jps lurking my english convo strat from xi, all the time, multiple occasions] I think if its common mmo lingo, they know it.

I really hope you're not serious here. Servers can handle thousands of players. So let's assume you're on a server that's "maxed out" at ... 5,000, just to pick a number. Even if 50% of them were Japanese players, that's still 2,500 people that you can potentially party with in your bigoted way. Oh, and I'd be willing to bet that at least 10% of that other 2,500 can speak enough English to satisfy your "I need to use complex explanations" requirement.

If there was a server limit of less than 100 people, you MIGHT have had a point... but you're just getting ridiculous now.

FFXIV's inclusive global server system is wonderful. Not only does it allow us to play with people from around the world, but it also makes it so that there are several peak playing times.

Would response times be faster if the servers were located in your country? Sure, but you probably wouldn't even notice it. I lived in Japan for seven years, and during that time I played WoW for a bit with a friend of mine back in the U.S. We played on a U.S. server. When we bothered to check latency his was always somewhat better than mine, but when actually playing the game we noticed no difference. Response times for me were just fine. FFXIV has big problems with lag, but it's not due to the servers being located in Japan. I guarantee you that gamers get the same crappy lag over there as well. (FFXI was certainly no zippier for me when I played it over there.)

I agree, I pinged the Lodestone and it was like 260ms compared to the normal 20ms I get on most other sites stateside.

And more importantly, is balanced to account for latency.

There's a reason why in MMOs there is no noticable difference between someone playing with 20 ping and someone playing with 300 ping.

Two tenths of a second can be a lot when you are constantly uploading and downloading data, just saying. I always had latency issues in FFXI and FFXIV when in area with 20 or more people. It is definitely playable and it doesn't bother me all that bad but it would be nice to be able to do away with some of that if it was ever an option.

That's not latency... that's the limits of your internet connection. Latency is just the delay it takes to communicate the distance between your computer and a server (literally the time it takes for the electrons to travel that distance). The problem you were having there is that your internet connection wasn't good enough to handle the large stream of info coming (trying to shove too many electrons down the pipe at once). Nothing to do with latency.

By the way, to those that say that there are "two seconds" of lag between input and skill execution, try checking your stamina. If you can't administer your stamina, it's not the server's fault :D

In FFXI we hadn't any so huge lag to break the game. Nor here, even if server-related issues are still present.
So, this is selfish like asking for japanese servers

Maybe if the server did not have to agree on everything we do on the game we wont have such problem with lag. I have no lag when it come to menu anymore just a few here and there.

I would not mind JP,EU,ENG servers or everyone together there both fine by me but SE would stay with everyone together and i agree that is the best idea.

UI is still laggier than other games even though there is a marked improvement since release, and combat is still unresponsive. If it's not due to regional servers then SE needs to show that they can improve it without regional servers.

This is true, however there's still the issue of segregation for me. I can understand some people are just fine with it, but FF was always a place where you could actually meet the entire community from everywhere. IF they could make a giant single server that would be best. But that's my own preference and I prefer if SE does not do region based servers EVEN if with the option of being able to play on a EU or Asian server if I wish it. Because then people stop trying to be careful how they speak to one another and just assume you speak their language and will ask the hell you are not on your own server and so forth. It's been done before and I prefer the way it is now.
