Right now since Yoshida took some idea's from many games but its obviously this one came from WoW so its a straight up copy of Warlock which at the moment needs some serious tweaking in order to make it much stronger and equal to BLM damage. I honestly thought you would be doing all of your damage through your pet and you would be the one commanding it to use its abilities but as I said above its to much of a copy of Warlock from WoW and needs a serious overhaul in order to make it a unique class that's not a copy.
If Arcanist - including both Jobs for it - needs tweaking, it will most likely happen. SE has been really good at following player's feedback. They took a lot of players contributions and suggestions into account when they tweaked some stuff.
You all have to remember that Arcanist/Scholar/Summoner was not tested in a CBT. All this stuff that most of you are complaining about, is basically the first true feedback for the class. Just let them solve the server issues then they can start to look at players suggestions.
I'm playing with sch and smn at the same time when my guild needs one or other. I tryied full INT and full MND on my attribute points (that 30) and finally i put all my points in MND over INT. The reason is that 30 points in MND affect a lot the power of healing but 30 points in INT doesnt affect so much in dots (because the low dmg) and after some tests in our best dmg ability (fester) it seems that 1 int = 1 dmg so it is not so much penalty imo while i can heal very well with my sch.
Sorry for my english but i wanted to share my thoughts^^;
Pets do not scale off of the Summoner's stats, which is a problem that will need to be addressed as eventually the pet just will not be worth it.
I tested this by taking off all my gear and the pet did the same damage.
//EDIT\\
I have not run into overall DPS problems. Summoners do have occasional problems with quick-bursting adds, but I have never run into a fight I could not do as a Summoner. The debuff limit on mobs will have to be fixed or Summoners won't have a place in 24 mans, but overall most of the things I think Summoners need are QoL, like being able to move pet while casting. Shadow Flare being 2.5s I would also like to see, but the spell is good, anyway.
//EDIT2\\
I see. My mistake. I still feel like the pet's damage is fine, aside from Enkindle being a dumb ability. I understand why people might want the pet to be more than an autoattack and DoT extender, though.
Honestly, the biggest issue for me as a summoner would be that its based off dots... not pets. It would be nice to have abilities you can cast they are used through your summoner rather then having that dot emphasis. Much rather say a red mage to fill that 'dotty' mage feel.
Reverend pets do scale when you take off your gear you gotta re summon them again but overall they still do rather low damage. Puru I do agree I picked the summoner hoping for a pet class low and behold instead we got a dot class with the pet being the side show.
I would love if Sumoner had some sort of Protection spell like Stone Skin or something. Even Black Mage have Mana Shield. sure Summoer having pet could be considered a shield I guess, but what about Bosses AOE attacks lol.
In FFXI even though I was Summoner 75 for 5+years with all Avatarsan elemental pets including Diabolos, We had pet protection spells lol. Garuda 3 shadows, Titan Stone Skin, Diabolos Protective shield. I'm greatful Summoner no longer healing support role, but it wouldn't hurt to give us Protect or Stone Skin lol.
Great post! I especially agree with these points. I often find myself wanting to direct Carbuncle to use his pushback as an interrupt but because I can't command him while I'm casting, the attack I was trying to interrupt goes off before I even have a chance to do anything about it. It's very frustrating.
Sorry to not contribute much, just wanted to say I love this thread. Thanks for everyone's thoughtful input. I was a career SMN in FFXI and plan to stick with it here. So far I am really enjoying the extra mental dexterity required to flourish. FFXI Summoner was far too simple in my opinion.
I agree with the poster that mentioned that it feels like a Warlock from WoW, I agree with that observation.
So far SE has been much more transparent with things and has generally been more responsive, so I think a small leap of faith in waiting for an update is important. But this dialogue to talk about our thoughts is important too, so the devs have angles to work with.
I just hope there is a dev out there whose main class is Summoner too. =D
