afaik you only get 1 companion chocobo atm, if you had bought the chocobo from 1 GC and then switch the the other, the chocobo will not appear on the sell list.
but as said, it is all about the future so lets wait and see but atm we gotta be careful of what we choose
add:
My chocobo atm is r3 with 6 SP, as r1 = 1, R2= 2 and r3 = 3
I would like to ask how much SP does it cost to learn the 2nd skill of a stance ?
10k seals as a GC item. Just like the character stat reallocation potion. Problem solved. You still have to work for it, but the option is there. If you feel the cost is too high. Oh well, gotta compromise some time right?
I they'd introduced chocobos as they did with FFXi, we'd not be in this state of confusion. First before anything, getting to raising your chocobo-chich from egg was more important than riding your own chocobo on the fly. Then came the chocobo-whistle and breeding with the whole geneology of colored chocobos. I seriously thought we'd be able to gain more SP really but I gained enough to open all three stances and haven't gained another rank since.
+++++++===============++++++++++++++++===============+++++++++++++++============
If the DEVs would of introduced the development of chocobo-managment, we'd not have a bunch of drama-queens playing with chocobos right out of the box without a clue what to do next! It's like giving your girlfriend or your wife a screwdriver and say,"fix that cabinet please"...
Seriously, SE and the DEVs thought they was making this game easy for all of us to play. Instead, the UI and widgets is suppose to help us play better, WRONG! If the game alone wasn't spoiling our brain cells and restricting us from thinking already, force education should be the manner of introducing content into the environment and developing the climax of chocobo-ownership.
is there a way to 'put down' my chocobo and start again?
realized im a summoner (got my chocobo before the class) and now i want it to be defender but i've spent a point in healer and attacker.
Well this kind of makes me not want to spend any points whatsoever, since I'm only level 30 and I haven't even decided what end game job I really like, and even then you never know if you're going to be in the mood to do something else for a while or enjoy another series of class/job quests.
Only drawback from leaving in freestance is they of course use the skills from other branches but do not gain the passives from each stance if you speccd for it.
very good info
Camate, could we at least get some information, either via tooltips, the tutorial, or on the forums of what the Max Rank and Max SP we can earn on the Chocobo Companion is? Considering we have to make permanent irreversible commitments when spending SP, not having that information from the beginning or on demand seems very problematic.
Re: Everyone asking how much SP abilities cost to unlock.
Rank 1 (Choco Drop/Slash/Regen) costs 1.
Rank 2 (first passive) costs 2.
Rank 3 costs 3. And so on.
These cost the same amount as you get SP from the previous level. You will be able to do:
-Rank 10 in one tree, 0 in others
-Rank 9 in one tree, 4 in one other, 0 in third
-Rank 9 in one tree, 3 + 2 in the others (1 unspent)
...etc.

If you turn off Active Help (like I'm sure many do), you will not realize that chocobo SP allotment is permanent. Personally I turned them off because I was tired of seeing them from beta. Not saying the blame isn't on the player here, but it's uncharacteristically rigid for SP allotment to work this way. Now I'm "stuck" with the terrible Choco Regen because I wanted to test how it would behave.
Unless there's a way to re-allocate these points, I guess I'll just finish the tank skill progression... Either way, it takes forever to level up these Chocobo's anyway. The biggest issue right now is the huge conflict it has with the Duty Finder. I can deal with having to dismiss him and use another Gysahl Green to resummon him, but not being able to use him while using the Duty Finder is a huge detriment.
The issue with not having respecs is that you put blind faith in the devs. You have faith that the ability/trait/whatever is working as intended, balanced, and overall does what it sets out to do. Have you ever seen an MMO with perfect balance and everything works as intended? I sure haven't. And lets pretend the devs ever decide something is not balanced and need to change things. What if I suddenly don't like the change. Are you saying I'm SOL?
I'm sorry if I don't wish to be punished because of bad design on the dev's part. Respecs gives us an out to this. It gives us the ability to not be severely disappointed when we spend hours dedicated to a game just to realize the devs have let us down and designed something poorly or have decided to change something that we now dislike.
It also gives us the ability to change our mind. This is a game where you can be any class on a single character and suddenly you're against letting me change my mind? You people are absurd.
Now if Chocobo breeding will be the answer to respecs, then I'm all on board for that. It's both flavorful and friendly to its users.
Please put out information on the total amount of SP acquired by max level and offer a reset for those who allocated skills in ignorance. Theres no excuse for putting players at a disadvantage like this -- if you're going to limit the amount of SP available it needs to be made known upfront so players can actually "specialize [our] companion and focus on acquiring skills [we] need," as opposed to having a random assortment of low level abilities acquired on the unrealized prospect of total completion.
Truth. I'd be totally down for this, but the devs need still need to give a reset for those who started allocating skills in anticipation of total completion (having not been told otherwise). Given the game is otherwise without skill trees (aside from bonus stat allocation.. which is also rather ridiculous given, once again, that there are no true skill trees) it was totally reasonable to assume that all the chocobo companion skills could be acquired as well.
Honestly, I think they should be as a reward for anyone with the patience to level chocobos to max (the exp rate is pretty ridiculous..), but I suppose thats a conversation for another thread.
In either case, additional chocobo skills seem to be of such marginal benefit anyway given the limited scope of chocobo usefulness (i.e. soloing.. or fate parties when you don't have enough people, which rarely happens at end game...) that I can't imagine anyone putting much time into this aside from simply to say they've maxed it out for bragging rights. Even then, given chocobos evidently can't be truly "maxed", even that limited value has been reduced.
Since I'm here, I'll expound a little on my overall thoughts on the three big problems with chocobo companions:
1) Duty finder cancel.. makes them almost useless, to me at least. They're a convenience, but by no means a necessity, and often turn out to be more trouble than they're worth given this sad fact.
2) Vagueness on available skill points, not reset. Not only is it unclear what rank you chocobo can achieve (I'm assuming 10 based on the achievement, but theres no guarantee of this... so 10+9+...+2+1 = 55 SP total?), but theres no option to change this once you find out that you can't actually max out your chocobo (a totally reasonable assumption given theres no other skill tree system in the game). Furthermore, theres no way to know ahead of time how skills will actually play out with the AI (i.e. you may want an awesome tank chocobo, then level it and find its buggy as hell), so a reset is pretty important here.
3) Slow leveling. Given the insanity of chocobo skill trees, and the prospect of chocobo breeding in thefuture, it seems odd that SE would see fit to make the leveling so incredibly arduous. Chocobo leveling should be an afterthought, and it ought to be more akin to FC levelling, not old school FFXI grinding. Chocobos should also be getting quest and fate exp, not just combat exp.
A number of people have voiced concerns that chocobo skill resets would negate the purpose of potential chocobo breeding, but I would think people would want to breed multiple chocobos with different skillsets regardless of the presence of a skill reset.
Personally, especially if they ease up on the exp requirement, I would think people would have more incentive to breed multiple chocobos with different builds, then modify each build using resets as they get a better feel for how the AI handles the target usage situation.
Putting bad grammar aside, if you're trying to say that people like myself, who evenly allocated skills anticipating a fully maxed chocobo, are fools for doing so because of some existing game mechanic, I'd love for you to point me to it.. like I said above, there aren't any skill trees in this game so I don't know why I'd be expected to anticipate one on my chocobo. The closest thing I can think of is bonus stat allocation, which is at least somewhat reasonable as we know what level we will max out at, unlike chocobo ranks. Theres been talk in this thread about the rank 10 achievement, but that said theres also an achievement for completing your level 30 class quest... should we have expected the game ended at level 30 based on that? Obviously not, especially given it was common knowledge the game is capped at 50, but the point is that until this thread I am unaware of instance in which SE actually made players aware of the fact that skills were to be allocated limitedly or what rank they would be capped at.
With the understanding that this game does indeed not support skill trees, my initial interpretation of the vague "how you allocate your sp is up to you, be wise about your choices because the decisions are permanent" text was that I should be cautious in my skill allocations by level to avoid a lopsided experience before hitting max. Evidently, that wasn't the intent of the active help, but there's no way for players to divine that on their own. Kudos to those who took the pessimist route and assumed SE would abruptly force skill tree decisions on them, but those who started allocating points in good faith that chocobos would follow the established skill norms from character progression should not be penalized for the error.
This is stupidly ridiculous! I never saw anywhere that it was permanent or that at some point my chocobo would stop ranking up, so now I have 1 point in each tree and my chocobo becomes useless. Is this how SE operates now? Pulling mechanics out of their butts and implementing them in the most backwards fashion possible? "Play are game because you can switch classes on the fly and play whatever you like whenever you want to! But NEVER put points into your chocobo for fear that someday you might want to play a different class!!!!!!!" The same goes for the ACN to SMN/SCH, but at least there you can use GC seals though certainly not optimal as I like to use sch for dungeons and smn for soloing.
Hello again. I am so-so on the stat reset. My Chocobo is rank 4 as of yesterday and yes I got 4 points there. So the max amount of points you will recieve is 55 at Rank 10. Now you can look through and choose 55 points worth of skills on 1, 2 or all 3 branches for your Chocobo. I went Attacker stance, I have mine working with my Summoner. I use titan to take out Fate bosses, some places people actually ignore the bosses, and Ifrit on the normal 48-49 mobs around the maps. Just out of curiousity at first I sent my Rita out with Ifrit. In 2 hits my Attacker Chocobo stole hate and kept it. So the attacker style can outdamage a Summoner's DD melee summon. The hate control of the Defender type, don't get too annoyed because mysteriously my Chocobo's standard hits went from upper 90's to 100-110 at Rank 4.
Keep an eye on your Chocobo damage, hate and heal. I think the Rank up itself brings bonuses to stats and, may, enhance the skill tree/s you have chosen.(<-supposition)
My bird can already tank even level fate bosses solo with only my healing support. If they get any stronger they will be stronger than players. Points take so much exp to earn that im not going to spend another till i have a max level bird. I still cant find an NPC the sells greens even though many say they exist. Didn't even know you could do all this stuff just stumbled upon it when trying to figure out why the whistle wasn't working.
Off Topic kinda.....but not worth a thread
If My bird and i completely solo a fate and im under the recommended level and we still win why is my exp gimped and why doesn't my bird get the same amount as I. 12,339 xp on a fate and I just duo-ed the whole thing with my bird as the tank and he only get 170xp. That's broken. How much would my xp be if I was level 50 instead of 44. even now at 47 it says im below level even though I been able to solo it with my bird since 44. My bird want his xp lol.
Gridania has one. Go to the crystal. Head north. The shop on the right just before the cave.
Don't pretend this mechanic is something we should have known about.
"Pay attention?" This system does not mirror any other system in-game.
"Warning message?" Yeah, not buying it.
I'm happy with my chocobo's spec currently when on my main class. I just think it is hilarious that we are playing a game designed around multiclassing and then are given a combat companion that doesn't work within such a system. Currently the system is all about working your butt off for a companion that will be helpful to some of your classes and useless to others.
I'm not so impatient with MMOs to where I will moan forever if something is incomplete* at launch, but give us some information before we start rather than waiting for people to figure it out on their own and give us some information about what you plan to add to fix the problems.
*And yes, the current system SCREAMS "incomplete." They have hinted at more in future patches. So stop defending the incomplete design as if it were good.
I really don't understand the developer's reasoning on this. We have characters that can be EVERY class. I can level every last disciple of war and magic, every last disciple of the land and hand on one character. Chocobos? Nah man, they can't do that.
(I agree that you should be able to reset.)
That said, the initial Grand Company Chocobo is not the only companion you will get!
For one, you will be a getting a black chocobo chick for your veterans rewards. Which you can raise and spec in a totally different way.
From what I've seen posted on this topic, you will still have your other Companions available too. So there is potential to have all Companions of different types, each with one of the 3 trees maxed, as well as a hybrid chocobo (like the one you may be thinking you already messed up).
To be honest, even though the Rank 10 skills look nice, having the three Level 1 Skills unlocked is probably the most useful spec for soloing/questing at this stage of the game.
Ability to reset? Sure, I like the idea of making it something you have to purchase with GC seals though, and it should be somewhat prohibitively expensive (10k-20k seals).
On a side note, it'd be nice if the crazy chocobo song would queue when you have your trusty steed in battle.
I'm curious to know where you came across the information regarding multiple companions? Maybe it was under naïve assumption but I had just thought the black chocobo chick awarded via the Veteran's Rewards was just a minion like the Wayward Hatchling. I'm honestly just curious about your sources and whether you'd be kind enough to supply them for me!

Q22: Please tell us more about chocobo raising!
A22: We’ll first be releasing housing, but you’ll be able to set up a chocobo stable and purchase a baby chocobo to raise. Once you have a chocobo stable you will also be able to do things like breed chocobos and train them.

'Hello,
... As your companion ranks up you’ll gain SP; however, the amount of SP you receive is limited, so it will not be possible to acquire every skill for all three stances (defender, attack, and healer)...
Altho their is nothing said about a reset lots of people are requesting it on the forums, since they feel without the proper explanation they are now stuck with a 'poorly allocated chocobo'. Also rumors are that you might be able to train different chocobos after the chocobo raising has been introduced to get a chocobo for each of your stances.
Are doing fates better to lvl your chocobo, or just killing single mobs 1 by 1. Thx in advance.
I've been looking everywhere I can find and I'm not sure I am correct about the Black Chocobo Chick. It looks like it may just be a minion as you said.
Yoshida stated that first the Player Housing would open > then the Stables would open > then you can raise your own chocobo.
Not sure the timing. Sounds like the Chicks will be rewarded to players before the Housing goes live. I was, in fact, assuming that the Chick would be related to chocobo raising!
The Dev post concerning the additional companions does seem valid though. I was really hoping for a black chocobo companion! Maybe that's is still possible even if the chick is a minion.
What are your experiences with the 3 different roles for now?
I'm still undecided what I should teach my (first) Chocobo companion
Hello, everyone! :)
You’ll be happy to know that we are in fact planning for a way to re-allocate your companion skill points. Once we have the details, including when we plan on implementing this, we will be sure to let you all know!
Also, for those of you who are curious, the maximum amount of skill points you can earn is 55 points. In order to learn the final ability for each role, you’ll need to put in all of these points. Hopefully this information will help you plan out your companion’s abilities a bit better until we introduce the method for re-allocation.
Does anyone have any tips on how to level your chocobo effectively? It seems to be a painfully slow process no matter how I approach it. Furthermore, is there any way to have it gain EXP once you are level 50? The reason I ask is because I'm just about 50 on every DoW and DoM class (1.0 player).
What I have found out is that as long that you can get xp from a mob your Chocobo will gain xp if so since you are level 50 on most jobs you have to fight mobs 43~50+ to level the chobi. Even since your capped at 50 you will still gain xp so its cool.
55 point for just one role? you know how much time does it take to level it up....
