Nvm..........
Well everyone will have their opinion. (Mine is I can't stand playing GW2 personally) but all we can do is encourage them to sign up for beta, let them test it themselves and then they will have their foot in their mouths (assuming arr is awesome, which I am hopeful it will be)
And here I thought having a blog meant you had to have something akin to an expansive vocabulary and at least some understanding on how to write things. >.>;;;
The tone of the "article" could have been different. Less comparisons to GW2 would have also helped. It's one thing to present examples from another game to argue a point on forums. It's another when an article keeps referencing something else when said article doesn't have much to do with it.
I loved GW. GW2 was ok, but honestly I am bored with it and enjoy the first one better. O.o I could never choose GW over FFXIV though. This article is pathetic. She does not have enough experience with this game to write an effective review. Of course... she doesn't seem to have the vocabulary either. o.O Who hires these people!?!
Well, it's an editorial. If she were objective enough to write reviews then that's what she would be doing.
Regardless of whether it's an opinion article or a review though, it remains a distinctly shallow analysis of a game that's still months away from release. It focuses on pinpointing the negative aspects and makes no more than a passing mention to the positive aspects (oh, and there's a job system, graphics, battle system and storyline, but meh)
Clearly, she disliked the game. She's allowed to. However, some of the points she made were utterly ridiculous. Omg I can't open a map and look for the name of a place written on it, such hard work!
After reading that article, its all the more reason as to why I don't take reviews of games seriously. The only opinion that should matter is your own on whether or not you like the game or not. I tried GW2 with a few friends for awhile, probably close to a month or more, but even then that alone didn't help keep me from dropping it. To me, GW2 was just too boring and the lack of roles didn't help either since none of the classes felt different to me not to mention other things but I won't get into that.
I went back to 1.0 shortly afterwards since it was able to keep my interest even if it was lacking in some departments at that time. In the end it really comes down to the player themselves in deciding what to play that tickles their fancy.
On one level it is their opinion and, however much I might agree or disagree with it... it is what it is.
However...
I will say it reads a bit like many forum posts I've seen. They make a token effort to "sound objective", but you can tell in their tone and choice of phrasing, as well as what they choose to focus on (primarily negatives), that their mind was made up well before they even demoed the game. They went into it wanting to ultimately tear FFXIV down, to undermine SE's efforts, to put their personal favorite game (obviously GW2) on a pedestal, and to try and dissuade people from checking XIV out.
When you've decided what your narrative is beforehand, it's a piece of cake to cherry-pick and twist things around to support it. I could do it to GW2 - or any other MMO - just as easily as they did to FFXIV. It's not difficult. It's rather lazy, actually.
Despite their attempt to exasperatedly complain about things as though they were issues with the game, much of what they noted are ultimately personal quips. The map system? Personal quip. The questing? Personal quip (I don't personally enjoy the questing style they're using either, but many people still do). And so on.
And seriously... They expected a "reward for their effort" in soloing a FATE that was far enough below their own level to be soloable? Really? Entitled much? That's someone looking for easy-mode gameplay if ever I've seen it.
They were put off that finding where they had to go required some effort on their part, and wasn't just laid out for them? Well, cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it.
The recurring comparisons to GW2 really paints a clear picture there. I agree with others who've pointed that out. They're a fan of GW2, whatever their reason, they feel they need to tear down FFXIV, and they wrote a shitty article to do so.
Try and break the MMO Mold, people complain.
Stick to MMO traditions, people complain.
yea I stopped reading when I opened the page and saw.
"Final Guild Fantasy Wars XIV-2"
I would like the 5 seconds it took to shake my head before I close the tab back please.
I had better not read this article
Sounds like if I do it will damage my psyche
Bias as hell article.
better to have the good from other things then be a full blown clone.
Hey, I could put together an article 10x better, if given the chance.
Yeah, the comparison with Guild Wars 2 comes exclusively from FATE events, since the two games have VERY little else in common.
The funniest thing is that this demonstrates how little the writer knows about MMORPGs. Yoshida clearly and openly stated multiple time that FATE is inspired from Warhammer Online, from which GW2 itself copied.
Yeesh... I couldn't even finish reading that thing.
Blah, annoying article. Also, is this true?
"If you’re too high level for a FATE, your contribution is ignored, regardless of how much time and effort you sink in."
So... People who attended got to interview Yoshi-P. I wondered how that went with this author. Turns out she posted that report today.
The interview/article was much less hate fest and in places leaned towards optimistic, though I thought it seemed like the bosses must have demanded of the author more facts, less anti-FF agenda.
Still, the author managed to slap a dose of hate in the worst possible place: the title. With a "twist the blade" kicker, we have the fatalistic: "Final Fantasy XIV’s director ... explains why he couldn’t fix a broken game" (PA article)
huuuuuur Y U NO AUTO COMPLETE QUEST!!!111
Y U NO GiB LEWT FOUR CONTENT THATS UNDER MY LEVEL RANGE duuuuuuuuuur
can somebody hold me hand please i need to go to the toilet?
I didn't even waste my time reading that crap because noone in gaming industry has even attempted them as far as I know so for them to sit up there and talk about how this game is copying other games is straight BS because when you look at all MMOs they all have similarities some where. Keep pushin on Yosi-P and Dev team
GW2 did not made the Real Time Battle i first saw it in Rift so i don't know wtf she talking about. "Using words like half-ass and pain in the ass to use" Is funny like hell she does not even know what she talking about. I like how she making GW2 look like this awesome game when it seem like a big % of GW1 fan hate GW2 lol.
Seem like everyone on the comment also talking shit to her so ya i don't even know how she part of that website. Look like more of a blog post like someone else said here then a real hard review.
Lol, Ben Kuchera stepped in to save the poor damsel in distress harrassed by the evil, evil commenters.
Sad to see that some journalists can't take it like they dish it. When they're the ones criticizing and disrespecting someone else's work, all is ok. When they're on the receiving end, the sky falls.
You know, I see everyone focusing a lot on the article in this thread however I would just like to be the first person to congratulate miss Sophie Prell on becoming the FFX|V fan base's public enemy #1. Guess this chick's never seen a Besiged going on has she?
This woman is the perfect embodiment of everything that's wrong with not just gaming journalism, but journalism as a whole these days. It's such a freaking joke.
I find the fact that he completely ignored the point of your post very telling. Got a good laugh outta that.
"Final Fantasy XIV is a pain in the ass to use."
LOL Yeah, that line in and of itself tells me she was either drunk when she wrote that article, or just simply doesn't know what the heck even she is talking about.
Well, good on you and everyone else defending the game. Whether someone likes or is even interested in ARR is up to them to figure out, not a GW2 fangirl with an agenda. Assuming anyone stumbles onto that (I know Penny Arcade is fairly huge, but I really don't pay any attention to reviews as a whole) then I'm sure those comments would at least convince some people to get a second opinion.
Unless they just delete all them for being "personal attacks". They clearly have more journalistic integrity than that though.
Threw in a comment on her article:
I encourage everyone here to sign up for an account and share an opinion or +1 those who are sharing theirs.

Cedri here, forum regular on the Final Fantasy X|V forums throwing in my 2פ.
Some of this article I don't agree with but I mainly want to focus on this quote;
"Copying this design from Guild Wars 2 isn’t a crime in and of itself"
There's a problem with that. Similar systems to how guild wars works was also introduced in expansions for Final Fantasy XI. "Campaign Battles" are the battles fought in the areas of Wings of the Goddess expansion and Besieged a form of defensive battle that takes place when enemy forces breach the gates of Al Zahbi, a large city from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expatiation.
Though not as free form as F.A.T.E. or the Guild Wars system, it centers around the same kind of idea. Go to a specific area on the map, complete objectives and receive rewards based on individual performance. So the idea of a large scale event like this is in no way new to the MMO genre and doesn't belong to just Guild Wars 2. This part of the article isn't researched well enough to convey an opinion based on an idea that was popularized by a recent MMO in this reader's opinion.
The "Penny Arcade" author is trying to be a poor man's version of Adam Sessler.
Will the real Adam Sessler please stand up?
Lol, I totally was thinking she was drunk too.. I mean my god.. my 4 y/old niece could easily use the XIV Map..
But not focusing on what she said, let's see what she didn't say:
Limit Breaks
Free roaming Primals
Housing
New Materia System
Story
Crystal Tower Alliance climbs
and God knows what else Yoshi has up his sleeve.
When you get a skeleton version of a game isn't it going to appear... pretty basic..?. I think her critique is the only bad thing you can say looking at the Beta version of this game, but to say it's over and done with.. Way way too premature
On a side note.. I played GW2 for like an hour.. graphics/story/game play.. it was tired. It didn't feel refined at all.
jeez what a GW2 fanboy/girl , obviously i wont be visiting that site again ._. you cant sit behind a screen and type your personal feelings on the game and say hey im a journalists like my "articles"
forget about that sharticle, the game will speak for itself
Hmm like my stuffed moogle always say "if you cant say somthing nice, don't say nothing at all kupo" sure there is being critical of somthing, but being negative for negatve sake is just...mean kupo.
After reading the article, i have to say her criticism is not unjustified.
This is an iteration of an existing franchise from an existing genre. As long as people understand that, they'll be able to enjoy the fact that its the whole FF sauce (staples, visual, design, lore, pacing) that sets this game apart. But it still needs a lot of work in on the UI and stremlining of progression. Particularly progression.
I'm assuming she was given very little time with the game to build an opinion on, to which she compared with her (most likely) long playtime with GW2. I've had some people telling me that there is "no grind" in GW2 (to which i rolled my eyes) to tell you how much of a good job they did at disguising it.
