Characters sliding on the ground... Will it be fixed for the release? Dev please?

Although I'm usually tired of people complaining about the smallest things in a game that we have barely tested yet... I agree that that "sliding/running on one spot" needs to be fixed.
It looks weird and it is certainly not going to go unnoticed by most of the people out there.

one thing i noticed was an interview video i watched (forgot where sorry :( ) Yoshi was talking about server restructure n what not. Beta hasnt even started yet so you people need to calm down, there will be many many weeks of testing and im sure they will have it ironed out by then.

I know that, I respect what you're saying. I'm just expressing my opinion about it, so are the others, that is all. The forums are a place where we can discuss and share our opinions on what we saw/experienced. You know there will always be something that will be worth talking about. Maybe at first, before anybody here, devs didn't notice/care about that. Who knows ? We have to make sure they are aware of what we see, and hypothetically what they don't. :)

You misunderstand.

"Legacy movement" means you turn around instead of backpedal when you press back. "gliding" or "sliding" is not intended in EITHER case. If you're choosing it because you think it fixes the sliding issue, you're misguided. It doesn't. The "sliding" thing is a bug. So no, problem not solved.

this post here shows why version 1 failed.

one guy brings up a legit a problem then trash talking starts. i'm pertty sure now the beta forums will be the same way like the original test. forums always have pricks.

It's very unlikely to be lag or latency related and more of lack of optimization in terms of how clients see other people. On your client you come to a complete stop, on Dragonheart's client, he sees you riding your invisible bicycle.

Lag, huh? You know, 1.0 had some of the worst lag ever seen in a MMO. And this never happened there. So... yeah.

I think it's due to the animation for your character stopping/starting up being removed they now run in place. Could also be lag/bug from their dev debug client. Either way it doesn't bug me much because I know it will be fixed sooner or later.

As been mentioned numerous times, yes, there are people that complain about the insignificant things, and while they seem stupid and unrelated and pose no real threat to the gameplay or experience, they should at least be voiced.

If someone raises a concern, especially if its something that may be eye soaring to some, let them voice their concern. It doesn't hurt anyone (but those that wanna complain about the person complaining) to post what they feel may be off or not right. Clearly, if it was not an issue, and it wasn't of any problem, then they wouldn't have brought up this concern. The dev team will determine if this needs to be fixed or not.

Complaining or attacking someone who has a concern or problem doesn't make your views any better. The ice skating animation may or may not get fixed. I'm sure it will, but there is nothing wrong in letting the dev team know that this is not ok. It is indeed not seamless, and it is a bit of an eye sore for some of us. Those of you that are ok with it, good for you, but for those that it does pose a concern, let the dev team be aware about it, and allow them to figure out if this is a problem or not.

I hope it doesn't have that issue anymore, where when you run on a slope in third person, the camera jiggles so much you get sick..lol..

Seriously people, you need to stop attacking anyone who says something negative.. That is not constructive and it will not help make the game great..

As you have noticed from watching the Letter from the Producer Live video, when a player starts running from the standing position, they will start drifting. The development team is currently making adjustments to enhance how this looks aesthetically. While this will improve the current animation, it will not completely remove the sliding animations.

they were set animations that had a set movement speed. which required slow starts/stops to your running. Players complained (rightly so), because it, and other realistic animation problems caused locking issues.

SE has never been one to trust a computer to smoothly blend animations either, from what I've seen. So unless they adopt a system like what you saw in say, Jak and Daxter, don't expect this to fully go away.

i don't get why future MMORPG had bad decision about sliding animation while doing WS.

Example : Warrior's Steel Cyclone makes him circled the opponent while flying 180 degree or more through the air.

Thanks for the official answer Okipuit. It's a bid sad to hear this, because ARR is a "triple A" MMO, and one of his pillar as Yoshi P. said many time is the graphic. This is an issue that neither f2p mmo have.. I wonder why ARR with his new engine / servers will have this issue?

Because they think it was a good idea to make the game suitable for a 8 year old end of life console. For the PC this game became a console port and the promised DX11 client wont change much other than some extra post-processing effects and better performance.

Sadly I fear you're right, "PS/2 limitations" that seriously impacted the quality of the PC version of FFXI seem to be dragging down FFXIV as well in the form of "PS/3 limitations".

PS3 is already limiting the develpoment, even if they say it's not, i don't believe it. Even if ARR graphics are still great, they are not the top anymore... Also the animation at the moment are a lot below the standards..

Anyway i'm curious to know why the dev team it's unable to fix such a stupid thing...

For example:
GW2 have the best movement animations i have ever seen in an mmo without action lock, also the characters have a lot of "standby" animation that make the world feel more living, even if you're AFK...

I suppose that this is the cost for making an mmo in 2 years...

I'm fairly certain this has been mentioned before, but the problem lies in a technique called animation blending. Animation blending gives priority to certain animations on a per joint basis. So if you are doing a weaponskill animation and start running, the pawn's arms and torso will continue the weaponskill animation, while the legs switch to a running animation.

SquareEnix Hates with a capitol H animation blending. I suspect it stems from a desire to have full control of the character's appearance at all times (we see this personality quark come out in the fact that they never use procedural environment mapping either; things like SpeedTree). To their credit, animation blending does have a habit of causing some downright surreal and bizzare combinations. It's particularly bad when poorly implemented.

Then was the fact that animations were split between top and bottom in FFXI just some one time thing that won't work here? (And yes, I'm aware that drain spell and probably some other animations had the sliding trick too...)

Now we've seen beta footage from the live letter and the "sliding" it's still very.. VERY persistent... :mad:

It's really a shame IMHO for a "triple A" MMO like FFXIV, expecially considering that one of Yoshi's goal is the best graphics among all the mmos...

I never seen so much sliding on the ground even in the worst of F2Ps ...
Even FFXI or the old XIV didn't have this issue...

Ever. Characters simply started running on a slightly different animation which then led to the normal one after a few steps (while keeping the same movement speed), and they stopped where they were meant to.

That is the case, Kleft, they didn't. Starting up into a run had a different speed from full tilt and stopping running had two extra steps. That wasn't noticeable when you were looking someone else run because of the lag, the entire process was a way of masking the laggy response to movement. I always noticed how the "You are moving" signal would stay active long (relatively) after I let go of the button, it made stopping to cast very problematic.

What they ARE doing is changing and adjust the animations to mask as much as possible the occurance of the 'sliding', but they already admit a perfect job is impossible, people who are REALLY THAT WORRIED about it like you and like a dozen other people will notice, people who are really more worried about gameplay and other aspects like me and most others, won't.

This, gw2 as example, very well done start/stop animation without action lock (well tbh it has "falling animation", idle animation etc... it's very well done from this side.. )

On the matter of Animations from 1.0 being replaced in 2.0 - All I really want is the best of both worlds; make the animations as realistic as you can, but make sure they're also not going to get us killed.

Watching someone attempt to kite, run for their lives while attacking, or try to dodge skills is hilarious when they're rooted to the ground because their skills say so, likewise, watching crafters and players drift about like they're Iceman defies the point of having realistic movement anyways.

You know, even more problematic is the fact that they also have to account for the fact that we can jump now to, so there's the issue of the Z-Axis in animations; It's not my job to worry about this type of work though, I honestly could not care so long as the animations work and I won't get killed because it.

EXACTLY - The little things are always there to improve on the bigger things... like Tessellation on stairs that aren't quite realistic enough, or Ifrit rubbing his butt after I've stuffed my spear up it for the 100th time.

I was watching the live stream for ifrit battle, and the sliding it's still here :( .. Sadly, nothing has changed from alpha/beta1-2 ...
