Shared hairstyles, new hairstyles and changing them

Right, because a Caucasian person can't get dreadlocks, cause only Jamaicans have it?
Culture isn't race specific, and people usually dress etc with the culture they identify themselves with. So you could be a Highlander, that dress and have haircut like some Roe, cause you grew up in a Roe community?

Dear SE, I know that having a character that looks just like everyone elses character is a standard feature in MMO'S but this is one thing you should not be copying. Go and count all the hairstyles you have, now times it by 10 and make that many and you may get close to what you should be providing.

The PS3 needs to handle all of this, there's no way you can do that and not make the haristyles look too simplistic, also, there are a whole bunch of colors too, even in 1.0 you can have your platinum blue haired character.

There is a literal hair difference between "real" world races - such that you -cannot- naturally have X hair as Y race. Certainly you can put chemicals in your hair for an effect similar - but it isnt actually the same.

So yes I believe some hair styles would be just to a particular race - which ones I dont know, since most of the ones we have currently dont look like it relies around the dynamics of the hair(which makes the argument of race specific hair harder, but I still think races should have as many identifiers as possible - unless SE is going to say we can interbreed because we are the same family of species.. then screw it all for all :P lol). Speaking of that It would be cool to have the hair be a little different (the actual racial characteristics, wavy curly, straight and coarse). Though unfortunately having already made characters and set expectations people wouldn't be ready for change, so.. 99% never going to happen lol.

We understand that by adding more elements it would open up character creation even more and give rise to more possibilities. However, by adding more elements the character data packets would also increase and there is a possibility that it would greatly affect network traffic.

Keeping in mind that this game will be global, we would like to look into this very carefully, since there will be users from all over the world accessing the game.

With all of that said, we are not turning away any requests for elements you all would like, so by all means please send us your feedback.

Excuse my cynicism but isn't that the default SE response for everything, akin to the old "due to PS2 limitations..." then suddenly in 1-2 years time it will be inexplicably possible.
Will the ammount of character creation options that the game can handle without causing an unacceptable increase in network traffic be tested in beta if it is the issue here?
The sooner the customer can evaluate what they will be paying for the better for all concerned.

Perhaps if you read this thread and also the JP forums you will find its not just me. Perhaps if you read the dev/mod post on this very page you will see that you are mistaken. Perhaps you will be happy with any old rubbish SE serves you up?

You are asking the dev team the impossible if you want 10 times the amount of hairstyles. Yes the JP want more. I want more, but we will not get more if it will come at the cost of game speed and performance come launch. And launch is the point where the servers will be facing a lot of traffic and new users on both pc and ps3. All the hairstyles in the world will not make up for a laggy experience where the game can only load a small piece of the mmo throng.

You really need to stop arguing with me based on something you know nothing about, more is possible, how much more is not clear. Yes so I exaggerated to make a point, my point still stands until we see something concrete. All we have seen is 1 new hairstyle for each race, unlocking of racial hairstyles (some anyway) boob adjustment, tail length adjustment and 3 unlocked genders, some increase in available colour palettes has been announced. Add this to what we had in 1.0 and we still have a laughably weak character creation system, so yeah we need more, so I ask for more. I will keep asking for more long after you have given up on this thread and after you have seen the 20th identical twin of Kallera Etoile walk past you on day one of relaunch.

Again you asked the impossible in your initial post. And really, you are blowing the character creator way out of proportion. I find the concerns of managing even larger amounts of hairstyles and colors within a mmo community a lot more believable than the "problems" you are describing, which I personally haven't run into during my playing of FFXIV, nor would I consider it a problem even if, by some stroke of good taste that it did exist. They aren't me, nor will they play or talk like I do.

Lag and bad game performance in the other hand, are much bigger issues which we all saw at 1.0s launch, and would not want the PS3 crowd to experience in any measure close to our own. This is a new audience for SE, another branch of revenue. and I appreciate the dev team's care regarding this, while keep the door open for fan input.

Wow miqo'te hair does not look good on Hyur female. Without the cat ears, it looks odd on them.

I would just love longhair for Miqo'te, something really pretty and flowing! If the female Roe longer hairstyle is available it may work on a Miqo'te...some of the Miqo'te do not look so good on the Hyur.

We need more Faces, Noses and cheek options. And they should have higher priority than haircuts because we will be able to change haircuts later in the game but the face options itself shouldn't be changeable. So we need all face options at the games launch.

If other MMOs pull off having 60+ hairstyles and sliders for customizing every part of the character's face and body without collapsing network traffic, I don't see why it would be impossible in FFXIV.

It's clear that this game needs a lot more hairstyles. Maybe in this moment they have lot of work to do in some other more relevant aspects of the game, but this is an improvement they had to do in the near future.

I don't reall understand how that would happen, greater packet thingy.　I mean, doesn't it only send stuff related to the character (omitting the other options)? From what I understand, it seems like it's sending the whole stuff even the irrelevant character options, no?
Ah well, it's not like we'll get a mechanic explanation.

But! In our defence, internet connections are supposed to improve in the coming years, not retrograde. ^^
Does that mean, at worst, we could see more options slowly coming in through the years and becoming available at the barber shot or as rewards? ^o^

how is it clear? we don't even know how many hairstyles there will be. It will be many times more than before anyways, with cross-race hairstyles; and we don't know how many more besides that they will add. But already it's 5x more than before basically.

Are we still talking about launch at this point? I think some of us have accepted that they likely won't ADD much by launch, mostly fix anything malfunctioning in Beta. I could see additional hair styles 6 months to a year after launch.

About the race-restricted hair styles:
I don't know if this is really a good idea because most hair styles are sort of basic hair styles that can be found in many cultures. To tie your hair back into a pony tail is rather practical I think so why should e.g. hyuran with long hair tie it together (when working) while mi'qotes don't? Or braid it or split it into two braids etc.
Besides since there is so much interaction and the local culture seems to have a bigger impact than the racial one (besides some exceptions as the naming) I think it would be sort of logical if there was some kind of visual exchange. Next to "common hair styles", if a lalafell sees a new hairstyle he/she likes a lot and feels like wearing it then it would be a "limitation of his/her self-expression" if he/she can't. I know, I'm talking about a gaming character but lore-wise/characterwise I wouldn't consider it too logical another way.
Dreads are not considered typically western, yet I know a lot of caucasians who wear dreads because it represents their own lifestyle that they have found for themlselves. Their own "culture" so to speak.

An idea that might be a balance is to have different hand-created hairstyle shapes "filled" or interpreted with a race's typical hair structure. For example roegadyns seem to have really wild and stubborn hair so a high/low ponytale on them would look different than the ponytale of a lala with silk hair.


Tl, dr: Rather than differentiating between races by man-made hairstyles give them the chance to wear the hair styles they want but differ between them by hair structures (that are genetic), e.g. very stubborn and wild hair on roegadyns that will make shared hairstyles still look different.

Its pretty clear at this stage that SE has done little to add to character creation when they resort to giving us hairstyles from other race that have not been adjusted and look rediculous. Its clear because whenever this subject comes up we get spurious excuses and vagueness from SE. It is clear that most modern MMO's have a character creation system that leave FFXIV in the stoneage.
I think its laughable that they spend 2 years remaking the game and then expect people to have to wait until a future date for cc to be upgraded to offer the basic level of customisation found in other games.

I would like to request that the dev team please consider a second, darker and more defined, Mithra-style nose option for Miqo'te characters that is not bound to a single face style. The current one is available for only one face and is hardly noticable.

Well that's what beta is for is it not? we can comment on: omg that hair looks stupid, pls scale it properly; then they fix it in 1min. I don't think it's *resorting* to cross race hairstyles; There's many hairstyles, but any given clan don't have many. There's not much reason to have it race restricted anyways. It would be silly to make 50 more clan restricted haircuts for each clan, when you can just take away the clan restriction.

SE has never been anything else than secretive; and since Yoshi tour is close, there's no reason to spew out info about the game before that. The tour is supposed to be the promotion tour that everyone has wanted them to do, to put the game in the spotlight. I'm pretty sure he'll unveil more details during the tour. It would have been even worse if they had already made public all the details, and have nothing new to add on a promotion tour.

Sure CC could probably be better; but we don't know what stuff they will add in phase 3, regarding that.
But i'm sure you can agree that with some of CC out there, you can make really ugly chars; and i'm sure SE wanna keep it realistic, so you don't end up with 1ft Aion midget chars, or other messed up stuff.
There's different races, and i think it's fine if they keep them iconic; so you can't change Hyur into Roe with CC; or Roe to Lal.

There's much more to a game than CC and hairstyles :) 2 years is quite short time to make a game from scratch; and they have so many things planned for future content, that hairstyles and such seem trivial anyways.
Btw, i don't find the CC to as shitty as you seem to suggest :p you can modify most stuff; Except making your char super buff, or super skinny and such.

I wanna see new Lalafell female hair! I'm so excited! I hope there's one I'll want to switch to.

Let's see what you're forgetting:

#1. You forgot most other MMOs are region specific or have separate versions, i.e WoW NA doesn't interact with WoW EU nor does it interact with WoW CN.

#2. Most other MMOs are PC only, they don't have to take into consideration how PS3 handles data, they're the one making the game, they know exactly what can and cannot work with their product.

#3. Most other hairstyles are exactly the same things with variations onto them in the "60+" catalog, which makes it even easier to add a ton if they're all basically the same designs. You know full well people would complain if it wasn't 60+ completely unique hairstyles.

#4. Supposedly, ARR will have "the best graphics in the genre" which requires much more data and so on. At that point, you have to scale things back in order to work efficiently.

I'd also like to add that hairstyles in other MMO's are generally of much less quality than in FFXIV. You can say a lot of bad things about 1.0, but the character graphic quality/animation (even the hair animation) was breathtaking. At least in my opinon.

I do hope they're at least adding a few new options, though. I feel they'd be taking the easy way out by just using what was already there in the first place.

So, what about facial hair? is that going to be shared between races too?

I really like your OP... I also know about SE's concern for network traffic. What I would like to know from a dev is WHERE IS THE LONG HAIR? I want Ororo hair.

I think sharing the current hairstyles is a great place to start. I would love to see more of course..
But if we didn't start with these then people would be asking "Why can't I have that hairstyle the miqo'te/lalafell/hyur (etc.) has?"
