Even if you reformatted all of English to follow a phonetic it would still change over time and you'd need new phonetics later (languages change over time).


Japanese isn't void of this problem (I'm assuming you speak Japanese or some non Indo-European based language).


I don't really know much of the language but I know there are some oddities with "su" sometimes pronounced sometimes not (masu vs desu (sounds like "dess" to a non-native speaker)). Give any language enough time in a natural environment and it will mutate. Other examples I remember (from one class of japanese) ha is written but pronounced wa. He is more so said e.


Just googled pitch, thanks to wikipedia one example:


[háɕì] 箸 vs [hàɕí] 橋 vs [hàɕí] 端


I think the last one is haji, but the first two I know are hashi but are indeed pronounced slightly different. And we havent even included the different accents of Japan.

"Su" along with other similar sounds, is abbreviated in speech often from what I've heard (not an expert by far in JP language but I've heard plenty of casual talk out in Cali etc). Dess, "staato (start)" etc

If I recall, Wilan speaks Italian, which is the same as my situation. I speak Spanish, so the same goes: what we hear is mostly what we write. Of course there are several exceptions (such as writing "gu" to make a hard g sound, but "gü" means you pronounce both hard g and the u). English, by far, has the most complicated grammar and rule exceptions >.>

No language is immune to rule exceptions though, even if, like Italian or Spanish or Japanese, most of the spellings are phonetic.

I defintely agree English has its fun for pronunciation but if your language has accents, or if it has any irregulars then at some point you will have to consider a true phonetic system and not call your language phonetic itself. At least thats what I was getting at.


"I laugh at you for trying to write phonetics" - and all I think is unless your language is 5 years or younger or has barely moved out of a small landmass then you'd also have inaccurate writing to pronunciation (time and movement lead to a lot of mutation).

(On su, from what I remember in class we literally said su for masu- although I looked into it more at appears only some people do lol google translator doesn't (while not the best source for pronunciation google has gotten a pretty good robotic voice))

Yeah its pretty out there to make that kind of statement, I agree.

The accents, for the most part in Spanish, break up the "phonetic" by giving the vowels each of their own syllable ie my last name García..which is pronounced "Gar-see-uh", but without the accent it would be "gar-seeyuh". Phonetics are fun!

Some more names to keep the thread going:

Y'shtola: eesh-toh-lah (curiously enough, in katakana her name is written Ya-shu-to-ra)

Niellefresne: Neel-fres-n (the ending n has a very slight "uh" after, since its derived from French. In japanese its written Ni-e-ru-fu-re-nu)

Urianger: yoo-ree-an-jer

Louisoix Leveilleur: Loo-ee-swa Le-ve-yur

Corguevais: cor-ge-vie

I took two spanish classes :D


(I'm by no means fluent in either Japanese or Spanish.. I'm not even being humble.. lol)


Its really amazing how interlinked the Indo-European set is (I mean.. its called that because it is interlinked) but its still very cool, just going to a warning label in multiple languages and if your life depended on it you'd probably still get a general idea of what not to do lol.


My wife (Taiwanese - speaks Chinese Mandarin) is always amazed how when I have to I can pick up small meanings in other languages like German and I'm like look.. it really looks like this english word.. or if I tried to say it- it sounds like this and I know what that means. (Of course she can get away with understanding a lot of Japanese meanings from all the Kanji).

Haha nice tries though! This is the beauty of FFXIV naming schemes..Roegadyns seem to follow a Dutch pronunciation system, while Elezens follow French naming/sounds. Urianger seemed to be the exception tho >.>

Yeah it's been pointed out before, my pronunciation of that and paladin seems to be amusing to some people. :)

It think the correct one is Choke-A-Bow, but that just seems wierd to me

I also ask for "hulls" instead of heals in a party, it took awhile for the US players on FF11 to understand wth I was asking for

Cho like in choke, ko as in coexist, bo in bow the weapon not the movement (movement is like ba-ow... or something lol).

I don't know how you can get "hire" from hyur..it sounds really unnatural even for English only speaking folk. You're right on Paladin though. It's "Pal-Ah-din".

Probably from thinking they are two syllables.
Hy(hi as in Hyrule)-Ur (Er) = "hire".

maybe "Hyur = Higher" would have been a better example instead of "Hire". just how it seems to me.

Hee-yer and H-yur (soft H) along with some others just sound too silly and unnecessary.
