You're trying to devise your own definitions here, but all you're doing is mangling and mixing already well-established ones.
F2P has always referred to a game - MMOs in this case - that you can download for free, install for free and play for free. There is zero monetary output required to get in and begin playing, hence it is "free to play" (technically speaking).
Here's a great and quite thorough article about it.
Revenue is derived 100% from Cash Shop/microtransaction sales that are "optional", but typically highly compulsory, with cash shop items created and sold based on research of what kinds of things people are most likely to spend more money on - namely convenience, power and anything that makes them "competitive", or makes them "stand out". Occasionally a developer will get bold (or stupid) and dip their toes into the "pay-to-win" category by selling items that give a clear advantage to the buyer. That has been the definition of it since long before the idea was ever introduced to the Western market and it was still exclusive to Eastern MMO markets.
GW1, GW2 and others like that already have their own term, which is "Buy To Play". It's a much newer term than P2P or F2P, but like the other two, it describes the revenue model perfectly. You buy the game, and then you do not pay a subscription. However, you will have to buy expansion packs to access their content. Also, B2P games typically also have a Cash Shop, which is basically just an alternative to charging a sub fee.
LoTRO and DDO switched to a so-called "hybrid" model, where you could either download and play a heavily restricted version of the game for which you'd have to purchase additional content with either cash or a shit-load of in-game grinding. Sometimes it's referred to as freemium.
Wrong.
Free To Play has been an established term with a very specific application/meaning for years now. Your "common sense" does not override that. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Here. Go educate yourself a little.
Ignore precedent and established definitions all you like. Stick your fingers in your ears and scream "lalalalala I'm right and you're wrong". You'll just look like a willfully ignorant jackass in the process. But hey, if that's what you wanna do... I won't stop ya.
As for the rest of your post... it's a bunch of baseless conjecture, spin-doctoring, ad hominems and back-pedaling. But I will comment on a couple interesting bits...
To say someone is "trying to get away with something" implies that the party involved is doing something shady with the intention of "not getting caught". That's the classic and standard usage of that phrase. Using it with regards to SE charging subscriptions implies that "SE is trying to pull something over on their players without their players knowing it". If you didn't mean that, then you chose your words poorly and should choose more carefully next time. Unless you're going to try and argue that your own personal meaning of that phrase is the right one, and the established one is wrong?
FFXI is losing subs over time because it's a 10 year-old game. And yet, it's still maintaining ~300k players and making them a solid profit. You're sitting there typing up all this info about "why FFXI is still sub-based" as though you actually have a clue; as though you've some kind of insider info of the goings-on at SE HQ or something lol. Think before you type these things, viion.
Am I angry at you? Nope. Not at all. I don't even know you, and I don't get angry at anonymous people on the internet. Not worth the energy. Do I get passionate and caught up in the topic at times? Sure. Ignorant misuse of established terms and phrases is a personal pet peeve of mine because it needlessly complicates and confuses what would otherwise be an otherwise straight-forward discussion. But that's still not anger.
Oh, and before you tell others to get their head out of their ass, you'd best try taking your own advice first.
I wouldnt play it if it was F2P. I played F2P games before, not as in depth and fun, and I dont have enough money to play a F2P game anymore these days. I say a F2P game not a TF2P game so dont freak out on me XD
You can knock a few titles off your list as good titles that are F2P.
I would've said Aion but it is just barely able to make the cut.
SWTOR- It is F2P for all intents and purposes but is severally lacking and limited to what you can and cannot do in the F2P model and I am severely disappointed. It isn't good enough to make the list and just went F2P a few days ago.
TERA- Not F2P yet so that doesn't count because like Aion was P2P to start but lacked at being truly successful so they had to go with a F2P model. Tera is actually a great game just lacks in certain areas and I imagine it's F2P model will be much like SWTOR.
Rest of your list is okay but I wouldn't call them very good or polished and I have tried nearly all of them. (nor would anyone who has played these titles)
Main problem with F2P MMORPGs you literally end up spending more than 10-15$ a month on them for content etc and that is something that you should never have to do. With a monthly sub you are guaranteed content, patches, hot fixes and many other things that you may have to pay for separately. Like having the ability to mail items to people. In the end you do not have to pay for said content if you don't want to but if you want to have even remotely the same experience as you get from a sub based MMO you will end up spending more.
Someone had to make this thread jussayin
F2P does *not* have to have cash shops or short cuts. You can do what WoW does. Why do you people object against that?
Everyone on these forums is LVL 50. Why would new people want to start this game if everyone else is 50 and they are 1? You people have it easy. You already got your year of free to play. New players may feel cheated.
Wait I have an idea. You get a subscription, you are 50 automatically. You don't, and you can't get past 30. I think that's fair.
Stating a F2P MMO's "active" accounts is like stating how many people are on Facebook. Stop trying to prove F2P games are good based on this "hard evidence".
All the F2P games listed suck.
ARR should definitely have a 30 day free trial, just like XIV did from the start and just like XI always did IIRC. With the speed of lvling you could have multiple classes to 50 by that time and be experiencing pretty much anything in the game i think. Outside of that, nothing should be free.
P2P plz.
There are so many things wrong in this post it's hilarious.
1. WoW is not F2P, in fact, it's the largest subscription MMO.
2. Not everyone on these forums is Lv.50
3. New player join different games all the time for a myriad of different reasons. By your logic, nobody would ever join any MMO unless they were signed up during launch.
4. Have it easy? Have you played the game at launch? just GTFO, the free period was the minimum SE had to do to keep some semblance of a player base, else the game would've died long before.
5. This game is not a F2P game, I don't know what kind of twisted logic would compel a new player to feel "cheated" that they didn't get a free year to play, other than it probably belongs in an asylum.
6. Automatic lv.50 if you have a sub huh? can your idea be more terrible if you tried? wait, don't tell me, I don't want to know.
Moral of the story, take your ideas, and kill it with fire.
As someone who was semi-excited for GW2 I was really disappointed by how boring each class is.. and the battle mechanics to begin with.
I was surprised that I picked FFXIV over GW2 due to the fact that GW2 was so damn boring.
I'd rather grind monsters in a party than repeat the same events by myself over and over until I get to the next area... in which I do the exact same thing.
#1 I have one level character a LV 50 Mnk my next highest character is a 45 Blm and they are both @ those levels because i put the time and it wasn't a grind to me at all.
#2 Like some people have already said WOW is not free to play.
Please don't compare anything to WOW!It's the most popular for a few reasons
#1 A monkey can play WOW it's that challenging(I had a 38 Pld back in the day in 2 days)
#2 It runs better then any other MMO(all games have some form of lag WOW just hides it better)
#3 it can run on anything since the graphics aren't very demanding being cartoonie.
$4 it's easy to level, easy to get around and easy to get Gold.
I've played just about all MMO's and alot of them in Alpha/Beta and only stayed with FFXI.Rift was kinda fun that ran and looked better then WOW and FFXI,but it was over run with WOWser's and all they did was compare it to WOW and except the Rift thing was a complete WOW ripoff. It was also easy to play with few challenges.Aion played more like FFXI with alot of weapon skills that not only had the same name, but the same animation<---thats pathetuc(Vorpal Blade) just an example!
I still have active characters(4) in FFXI which i pay and rarely use,but i keep active so if i decide to play it i can.

That's literally all I needed to like this comment.
Awww, SHADDUP!
This account with it's myriad of 50s doesn't have legacy but my old one with only 1 lvl 50 and another char with highest 45 does... I will deliberately be making a brand new character and maining her.
I'll start out my adventure with gathering and then crafting. After several months(and making millions of gil- teehee!) THEN I'll move on to serious full time warfare, TYVM~
I have no desire for FFXIV to go to micro-transactions and would drop the Final Fantasy series if they did.
1st of all i dunno why people use the deceptive term F2P because it's not even a viable option it's micro-transactions. And there's 2 things inherently wrong with micro-transactions.
#! and MOST important is that SE has always made a strong stance in support of "Fair Play". The concept of Fair Play is completely in contrast of micro-transactions. Buying accelerated XP, gear, etc from a Cash Shop (instead of earning it on equal terms with the rest of the player population) is directly in defiance of Fair Play.
#2 to maintain an equal playing experience of a subscription model in a micro-transaction game has always cost more than what subscription based games cost, with the exception of a few that are designed for children.
I would pay $30 a month over going F2P.
Oh dear jebus will you people stop going on about free to play?
I think a premium service will be fair. those that don't want to be a premium member will just stay gimp until they upgrade.
But hey, this is really further down the future. If SE thinks it will be the best way to attract and keep potential costumers, then they might consider it if they have to. I mean I hope they don't have to consider it, but its best to have a plan B for just in case.
Well that is kinda the whole point of F2P MMO's, they get their money from other sources trough "cash shops" such as exclusive gear, bonuses, stats, hell even like you said levels, you essentially buy your way to endgame and that's how F2P MMO's support themselves. SE on the other hand doesn't have any of that, and frankly it's doubtful they ever will.
You also have to consider the other problems with F2P as well. (I didn't read much of the thread so this could have been stated already)
-F2P makes it easier for competitors (gil sellers, bots, other players, etc.) to setup accounts to freely buy/sell items and goods too/from players instead of SE taking money and profits away from them (all they have to do is undercut SE).
-Players who can "buy" their way to endgame typically lose interest faster, and the longer subscribers typically bring more money over time than people who spend 50 bucks and quit a month later.
-People who don't or are not willing to pay their way to endgame typically are at major disadvantages (IE: No obtainable uber gear, gear restrictions, limited playtime or Fatigue systems, and even in some cases lack of basic gameplay features.)
-Constant Development of new limited time goods to sell for the F2P shops typically take up a larger portion of the developers time, which takes away from the games overall development.
All I can say is SE already took a big gamble trying to reboot FFXIV, they take an even greater gamble going to F2P. Companies like Blizzard's systems work with like Diablo 3 because much of their gear plays off the deplorable RNG that randomly rolls stats leaving the probability that the item can be great, good, or just plain suck automatically hightening or lowering the value of items and removing the need for constant new item development, SE doesn't have that luxury nor the resources to redevelop FFXIV for such a system or any other F2P system that wouldn't take away from the development of the game itself.
I Perfer P2P because of 1 reason -----> it stop non-serious players from playing this game. Its invites hardcore players ( like myself ) and casual players. it separates the non-serious from the serious players who invest their money into FFXIV. i know F2P have some serious players also. i also play F2P like ex: Aion because FFXIV is not out yet but when it is i will be there fo sho. Right now FFXIV server are up and im logged in into game knowing there will be no save. i still run around and let my character idle...just hoping i'll see something special going on. I enjoy play F2P but im not serious about it. i know im not because i haven't play Aion about a week now. just my opinion im not knocking those who enjoy F2P but please don't do a Poll and covinces FFXIV to be F2P /say if you would be so kind
Yes no F2P ever please, thank you. I do agree with timed trials, if the game is enjoyable enough people will stay.
What WoW offers is a limited free trial, capped at level 20. It's no more "free to play" than the 14 day free trial it replaced. The only difference is they limit what level you can get to, rather than how many days you can play. When you think about it, and how fast/easy things are in WoW these days - even as a new player - you can get a lot farther than level 20, and do a lot more content in 14 days. You can get to level 20 inside of an afternoon, easily. It's easier to cap content for a free trial based on "maximum level" than it is based on "maximum days".
When you think about it, it adds up. By allowing you to get to level 20 quickly and experience the content up to that point - even on multiple races/classes - and then hitting that hard limit, you get to a point of making a decision:
1. You're going to find the game is worth it and buy a full account.
2. You're going to find it's not worth it to you, cancel, and get the hell off their servers.
With a level 20 cap (again, being as easy to reach as it is), you're going to reach that point in as little as a day or two. With a 14 day trial, you'll be hanging out for a while, and likely seeing a lot more of the game along the way.
The level 20 limit works a lot more to their benefit than it does the players'.
New players will have a brand-new game that isn't borked beyond belief (ideally) and will have much more to do. They won't have to put up with the on-going issues, bugs and such that 1.0 players did to play the game. So, in another way, they could feel fortunate that they are starting off and getting to experience a much better game where much of it isn't experienced through gritting teeth.
In fact, a number of people have stated exactly that intention; to wait 'til ARR launches, see how it is, and start then. So they're not being "cheated" at all. They're doing it by choice.
Another way of looking at it... how are they being "cheated"? Others were playing while they weren't and, so, others would make progress while they weren't. I see nothing unfair in that.
Existing level 50s can also start new characters and experience it all from level 1 as well. Or, as in my case, people have classes/jobs that aren't leveled at all and can still experience the whole game from level 1.
SE has gone over it a couple times. currently they dont' want to change their business model from subs to something else.
In all honesty most cash-shop games cut a lot of corners. the games are mediocre at best. have terrible balancing. and the engines are carbon copies of 100s of other games.
There are a lot of models you can follow, but all of my favorite MMOs have a sub. Excepting LoL, but it's in a genre of its own and has very unique problems and very unique method of success. not every game company will be able to do what Riot games did and develop a culture around a group of workers where they love, live, and breath the game. Riot also only has one game that's really successful. so they can baby it to their hearts content.
SE, on the other hand, has several games in the pipeline. they also publish a lot of games they don't develop. what we can take away is that they take their craft seriously. they could have canned 1.0 a long time ago, but they didn't. they decided to fix it instead. that says a lot.
but back on why i don't like f2p models. i've played a lot of f2p games. I'm playing raiderz while ARR is in development. i interact with my guild from 1.0 over skype, our guild forum, and TS3. we've been playing LoL and recently Raiderz. Raiderz, while fun, isn't the type of game to hold my attention for long. F2P games release content much slower. because they don't make money on them. they make money on cash shop items so they spend the majority of their time balancing that out. League of Legends, on the other hand, can continue to focus on content because of how they set their model up. as a MoBA releasing new characters is both new content and more money. as more characters = more skins which means more stuff for people to buy. new characters also keeps things very fresh, and the balancing in this game is bordering on excellent.
thinking on how FFXIV might copy this...they can't keep up the pace of releasing a new job/class every couple of weeks, or even every couple of months. so what could we spend money on?
gear? no. then it becomes pay to win.
luxury/vanity items like houses? ok. but now I've bought my house. what else am i going to buy? furniture? ok! done. now what? oh...nothing left? ok... how about cool costumes? oh wait, we dont' have a vanity system so i lose all my stats because it's town gear? no point in that.
mounts/pets? again you only have to buy these once. and it's not like most people are going to buy 800 mounts.
how about XP boosts? oh wait, i have everything at 50 already... gil boost? nah, dont' really need that. I have enough gil.
how about paying to enter certain dungeons? ew. lame. this would cause an uproar.
We dont have 'tech trees' so we can't do re-specs either. so essentially a cash shop model simply doesn't work for ARR. because there isn't a lucrative way to add in things you can buy on a consistent basis without making it pay-to-win. Sorry, i just don't think it's a good option for ARR to go f2p. allowing the dev team to focus on new content is more beneficial to the player base than going F2P and adding a cash shop. simply because there isn't a whole lot we can buy in the game to make it worthwhile and fair to the people who don't pay.
Citing games like League of Legends is fine. but people tend to forget this game and that game are completely different genres with a completely different model. League of Legends doesn't have a lot of in-game lore. it exists if you want to find it, but it's not like FF where the world is dependent upon that lore. you get far far more enjoyment out of it if you enjoy the lore and story.
I think the biggest mistake everyone is doing here is thinking in the now. We got to think about later on when the new game economy is settled later on in 1-2 years. I hope subscription level keep rising, but if it does drop SE got to think of something, so I dont think there is anything to worry about now.
That is true, if the game fails then yea, i could see SE going to micro-transactions... After all that's what a majority of these 'examples' did when they went to micro-transactions from subscriptions. Most of the 'examples' would be like putting in micro-transactions for 1.0 instead of re-releasing the game and thank god they didn't do that.
To the company it would be better to let the people who want unearned, instant-gratification to feel good about themselves and make money off of them as much as they can, AFTER the game doesn't provide the minimum revenue compared to projections; aka Fails (since another relaunch would be pointless). But that's also the same marker where the company gives up and the dev team is dismantled to bare-bones and new content is a rarity if it isn't just cut & paste old content except for their Cash Shop development which would push out a significant number of their subscriber base they had left.
And SE STILL has had no need to do anything like that for FFXI so I have hopes that they will not for FFXIV.
So many badasses in this thread.
P2p only please.
i hope FF14 doesnt become like other games THis is a real game and if u dont like it then go play those F2P games then but i want something good and worth and i will be p2p for FF14
You might. But not everyone's like you. And you assume that a person is going to start playing the moment the account is created. Well with XIV, I created an account in the middle of November 2011. But the game was incredibly difficult to get up and working. A lot of it was because registering was a major pain in the ass. I then decided to go back for FFXI a bit. Also some real life stuff came up. ETC ETC. But I didn't actually create the character I have now until in December.
Unlike in the fantasy world of games, we are at the mercy of time. We can't speed it up, or slow it down. So 30 days is 30 days. Even if it's the 30 days you we're stuck in a hospital, or your quiet north-eastern town was hit by a massive storm and flooded everything. Life happens. And the reason why we play games? It's because games are not life.
Honestly i want any threads titled f2p or p2p i would like to see those posters banned because both parties are extremely annoying square enix has no intentions of making this game or ffxi f2p so if you want it that way just fucking leave you are an embarassment to society and no one likes you.
And if your crying about the time you get to play just cancel your account because no one has sympathy for you get over it.
Pay to play has a standard set of reasoning to it you are paying for high quality service content and new releases that everyone has access to. I personally i think f2p is absolutely the most retarded thing in the mmo world and most of those games are 100% terrible low quality 2d cartoons if you want to whine about paying for quality go screw yourself. Thats like saying in real life i want a french croissant but i dont want to spend $2.75 so you sacrifice quality for the $1.00 or free croissant that in the end will most likely taste like crap and not satisfy your hunger.
So all you f2p gamers go have fun with your garbage while the rest of us real gamers continue to have fun and be satisfied with the service we pay for.
ughhh this subject again, you could have Replied to the posts made earlier instead of starting a whole new thread
im loosing faith in the FFXIV community -.- waste of time ppl arnt saying anything new.
personally i prefer Pay to play. good service cannot come for free :p
why people keep complaining .. SE wont care for just 1 person who want F2P ..since most people want P2P and prefer everyone to be equal
im sure she ask for F2P cos she jealous to not be Legacy... is that it ??
and if you are legacy why do you complain a 10$ fee ....
and F2P game = alot more bots ....
This game wasn't thought as a f2p game when it was been made, so turning it into it could destroy the game.
In MMOs the developers think of the way they should monetize ( or at least they shoul)
on top of it we have see a lot of power creep in XIV. remember those great DH drop? or how good the ifrit weapons were? and how moogle weapons were a must for a good player?
what would you think it'll happen when you add money to the mix?
pay to win is stupid and it hurts more than it helps.
microtransactions is not that bad (NOT SAYING THAT XIV SHOULD DO THIS) if it's done right, wich most companies don't seem to know how to do it.
and while we are on the subject, a great f2p model could be where they let you play for free if you let them use 5% of your prosessor to crunch data, wich that prossesing power could be sold to reserch facilities for diffrent sorts of studies. that imo would be a win win win situation. and something that i have never seen done
In case it's not clear, I want FFXIV to p2p. think it's the best option for it and it would be beneficial for everyone.
and if they are doing a good job with the game, the updates and expancions, why don't give them a bit of your money to show your appreciation? and have a steady source of income to keep working on making the game better
I love angry thread repliers! hahaha!
Free MMOs are gross.
There is no way FFXIV will go free-to-play regardless of what the fans want imo. FFXIV was made around being paid to play, and thus SE is putting in all its resources to do so. They must be investing a whole lot of money/time into 2.0 because its pushing all their other games back i think(IE FFXIII Versus/ FFXV/FFXIII-3). This is just my view of it, but I think SE is probably praying on hands and knees that FFXIV is successful because they need to make some money back after their initial investment flopped in 1.0. I doubt SE can even afford to make this game Free to play even if they wanted to at this moment.
PS. This is my opinion of the matter off the top of my head, so take it as such.
i was reading back and i found this. and i've seen this a lot of times on diffrent forums.
IDK how to put who said it and the lil pic of the character. if someone could explain it to me would be great. thanksQuote:

like everyone that plays MMOs start the game at lunch day every time. there's always ppl joinning MMOs at all time, weather the game is new or it has many many years. I joinedd FFXI in 2008, WAAAAAAAY down the line, 4 expantions had already come out, and i still had a blast. I leveled 3 job and finished all the story lines w/o a problem, was always able to find ppl to do things with. in fact in many many ways was beneficial, cause i could use te expertice and knolege of those who came before me. long story short, there's alwasy gonna be players who are more advanced than you ALWAYS.
why dont all the free to play tramps just sling their hooks and find some lousy micro transaction game to play infact i have the perfect one for you all its called RF online
full of hackers exploiters and brasilians huehueheing all over the place take 999999999 years to reach max level and you need to use the item mall to get even basic max level weapons
I'm going to explain this as someone whos played both Pay to play and Free to play MMOs quite a bit.
LOTRO and now SWTOR are free to play, the problem is you're VERY limited unless you're a subscriber.
I'll list a few things here that explain free to play vs pay to play.
Pay to play:
Pay a small monthly subscription fee for unlimited access and no restrictions on current content.
Free to play:
-You have to pay to access storylines, in some games you have to pay to access the quests and content in specific zones and you pay for the zone, not all of the content
-You have to pay to access content, be it raids of PvP and you are limited with how much you can do per week.
-You have to pay to access some playable classes or races.(Imagine having to pay $15 every time a new class was released, or even $20 for the race on TOP of the expansion cost.
-You have to pay to access some armor slots and even STORAGE (Imagine having to pay real world money for 10-15 inventory slots on a retainer every time you wanted more)
-Have to pay to access almost everything in the game beyond the first 20 levels that subscribers get either way.
-Some games make you PAY to be able to wear a specific level of equipment, imagine having to pay to be able to wear AF and raid drops? In games that follow this its often $15-20 for just that feature. Imagine what else they could charge you for.
All in all, you end up spending MORE on a F2P MMO than you do on a P2P on average in the first couple years.
Imagine entering a raid only to find out its the only one you can enter that week. Or doing pvp and realizing you're only able to pvp 3 times a week. What about only being able to gain a set amount of xp on jobs before paying to raise your personal cap.
That money adds up, specially if you're a newer player. Sometimes just paying for one of those can cost more than the sub fee for one month, sometimes two!
IMO pay to play is a much better deal, since every patch you as a free player would have to PAY to access it or not get new content at all.
The second free to play people see how much subscriber gets they would only complain and say they should get more anyways. So whats the point in even debating free to play.
There is another option SE can use... Paid name changes, race changes, server changes, appearance changes, buyable cosmetic gear. All of these are used by other MMOs, P2P and F2P
I say this game should remain pay to play. If its as good as it seems it'll be worth my $10/month as a legacy member. Its a better deal then paying every time I want to do something and sitting there doing nothing after finishing my one weekly raid.
