I'd assume that they would have to have the information available for you to be able to get it, or at least work it in so that fills correctly when being filled etc so that any new, or necessary information (for example, certain Opo-opos may give this bit of flavour text in your bestiary) needs to have some kind of trigger.
Thats my guess anyway.
*Edit* Anyway, I'd love to see something like that, it was an enjoyable bit of fluff in Warhammer Online, tracking the different monsters and such you had killed, with flavour and such to go along with it.
Weird, I could swear I saw this very idea in the JP forums recently, with many of the same points in the OP.
Ah, here we go. Not quite the same but it went in a similar direction.

This is a great opportunity to put more lore in the game like many people want. I hope they decide to go beyond just a beastiary! I would like to see an encyclopedia like the one in FFXIII! I would like to see the lore on the areas, the companies, the guilds, the cities, and NPCs. I would love to know more details!
Should rename this game WALII:XIV
I'm surprised this got dev attention, but really pleased about it. Even the collection of monster-felling titles in FFXI was a big thing to collect for some people, so the addition of a bestiary would be great; it adds something to the lore that I think a lot of games are missing.
Oh wow! I never thought I'd actually get a reply. I'm extremly glad to hear Yoshida is considering the bestiary! Now we can get some real attention to this thread!
They must have totally ripped me off! I kid, but I did make the thread 2 months prior to them.
Just found this. Love it! 'Nuff said. Liked, will pass the word along.
Great idea! I would LOVE to see it implemented!!!! <3!!!!
Updated with a mock up bestiary page, obviously a quick mock-up. It's missing a few features but it's a general representation of what could be.

I understand the likeness of a Bestiary, and the different way's you've suggested it are indeed appealing, but... This is a community based game, not a single player game like most other Final Fantasy's (besides XI). There are greater benefits in having the players learn and discuss the games many aspects, for one it drives us each to co-operate which in turn forms a bonds with real people as we adventure. It motivates us to form browser based communities such as the hundreds of linkshell based forums and databases already being developed.
Also, your almost suggesting the development of an entirely new game within XIV, with the creation of bestiary cards and such. I didn't mind the Colosseum of Whitegate in XI, but I don't think a lot of this game's player base is going to enjoy a Pokemon or Yu-Gi-oh system creation while there are still so many more UI and Content deficiencies. I don't really see how adding more graphic menu detail will improve UI performance anyways. I don't want to be a debbie-downer but these kinds of additions I might like to see later on in this games career.
Your promotion of this thread is impressive, what with your activity in many other threads and having it boldly printed within your signature. What I hope you should delete is your; "Yoshida himself likes the idea, you can too! click that like button today." The quote of the devs in itself is great to see the response, but by pushing for 'Like's you've begun your own campaign, one that implies something other than your original cause here. (I would gladly delete this paragraph and 'like' your post, if you deleted that sentence ^^;; )
I was just thinking the other day how i liked doing the monster hunts in FFX (i think thats the right one) and it would be cool if they added a bestiary that you filled in by going on hunts that you got from the task boards in town.
By pushing for likes I'm pushing for the developers to recognize it outside the "We will look into it" I have no reason to "Claim fame" in a MMO. I'm a marketer by nature and I'll do whatever I can to give the post all the exposure that it can.
Many of the ideas are not originally mine it's an alamgamation of what the community has suggested. I've stated in the thread that it's a rough outline and I'd love to see how the developers want it to roll. All I want is a bestiary, I may agree that wiki's are a great place for the community to compile data and I know without a doubt that having a ingame bestiary would do little to stop this phenominon from happening and thriving anyways. Hell it would help flesh out information that Wiki's take years to even find out.
Even with a ingame bestiary I would still use Wiki's and Wiki bestiaries. I just like the flare and lore that bestiaries can bring to the game that is severly lacking in such.
I'm not bending your arm to "like" the post if you don't want to. I just know that threads outside the general discussion boards get little attention unless your scream and shout about them. Am I a proud to have made a thread with a dev response and I'm not taking the post out of context the Community rep stated that Yoshida liked the idea and I'd love to see this and many other idea threads get the proper view and like counts they deserve.
If they allowed us to actually have shorter links in our posts I'd gladly cross-promote a great deal of threads that need the attention. Sadly due to restrictions we can only past full URL's in our signatures and any kind of "Great ideas thread" in the general discussion boards gets burried under all the hate that many threads garner.
I have to fight against the spam threads just to keep a semblance of an idea, if threads didn't get burried in 20 minutes to the 2nd and 3rd page I wouldn't need to go to such extremes. If my promoting offends you in any way I'm sorry but I wont change it. If the Community reps want the dev-response removed or me to change my OP they are able to do it at a whim as well. I mean no offense to anyone or to twist anyones arm but I will continue to promote the thread in any way I can. The idea is close to my heart "as I made the thread lol" But I'm not trying to strive for any fame or anything other than making sure people give their input on how they feel a Bestiary should work.
Thanks for the input though.
*edit*
I also note how you don't want it to happen right away. In my OP I state I'm in no rush for it to happen. I just want to keep the idea on the table. it's times like this I wish the forum had a PM function so I could corespond using that.
Maybe I just didn't like the way it was worded. Too many commercials and adds on TV and internet suggest consciously or subconsciously the "click it now" or "buy it now" command that people simply can't refuse. On the contrary though, I think a lot of the generation who view and post on these kinds of forums are of a like mind to resent such kinds of promotion. Because a lot of us don't like to feel lead-on, or coaxed into things we don't need or want. It's the same reason I don't visit certain car dealerships, a lot of people don't like their form of pressured sales. And I honestly don't mean this out of angst or disapproval, after your last post I trust in your resolve already, I just don't think your cause can afford that sort of discrimination if it's as difficult as you say to promote it. (Liked~)
I agree with you to a point it's mainly why my signature add doesn't say "Do it now!" but encourage you to be heard as a community member.
I'm also a person who personally is little effected by flashy attempts to grab my attention, but I think the general post speaks for itself aside from my occasion flash grabs to garner a few extra likes. Perhaps I shall tone it down a tad in the OP the message speaks for itself.
Sounds fun; I'd always love some extra content to do!
Love the poster! And I'd love for an ever-changing stack of posters listing the number of times I've fought a creature type and either killed or lost to. Maybe a way to track all the exp I've racked up through them, as well. That way, after 10,000 exp the description expands as you've "learned" more about them. This learning granted you bonuses (+att, +def, better drops, etc.) against that creature in the future. Each additional bonus takes longer and longer to get to, giving us a long term goal to work towards.
I think this would be a great idea. The old-school FF games had bestiaries. Warhammer incorporated this idea into their Tome Of Knowledge (which tracked quests, exploration, monster kills, achievements and gave you tidbits of in-game lore). It was a truly unique idea that brought a lot of immersion to the game. With FFXIV to be soon getting an achievement tracker and title system, they could use that same groundwork to incorporate something like this into the game.
Plus, seeing those ??? entries gives you incentive to slay more monsters! Gotta unlock them all! It would be a nice activity for us OCD types.
*Thumbs Up*
they are prob waiting for the ps3 release so they can bundle it with a guide book, lol.
Give me Mystery! GIve me Beastiary! GIVE ME CHALLENGE~!
I don't think the "Battle fixes" will be fully finished until we see the job system roll out, and even then they will have some balancing to work with I assume.
I would be interested in knowing what "Paramaters" needed to be adjusted though.
Travesty of travesties! I didn't realize I never 'liked' the first post! Shameful...
Anyway, I like the idea of a bestiary being available on your Lodestone page as well as in-game. Tied into achievements maybe?
I also agree that it'd be a good idea to have a sort of "gauge" in which you would have fragmented amounts of information on said mob until you completed it. This would include anything from HP pools, maybe a little lore, behavior and attack patterns, spawn locations, loot drops, etc., just to name a few examples.
Sorry if all this has been said, but I feel like I had to contribute somehow... >.>
I like this. Bestiary, scan/libra. Yes please. Si por favor.
Specifically, an option to remove UI mob information on mob name tag, and have that information in the bestiary.
I support this!!
All good ideas.
It just seems to me, with SE's long history of making Final Fantasy games, they should have a good gauge of what players like and don't like. And a bestiary is something that's been include in a lot of the recent FF games and I feel people enjoy having! Tie it in with achievements, give us bonuses for hitting each achievement. Any of these things would encourage players to go out and kill various mob types, if only to complete our personal bestiary and give us something to do while we wait for the next update.
I really hope they put this feature in, it gives people the answers in game without just handing them over, I think it works out great for everyone! You could do a simple quest to start your beastiary with some simple mob information already added in to get you started, this would be a useful quest.. unlike the kill 8 squirrels for a subligar quests we have now.
Signed, I love this idea, I wish you worked for SE lol.
I want to see something like this, something really addictive to sink my teeth into. There is nothing like this in the game atm. Sadly if stuff like this isnt in an mmo at launch it almost certainly wont ever get added. Or at the least we wont ever see anything like this for many years.
There is a reason I play final fantasy rpgs when they come out. Sadly FFXIV had very few of these reasons in it.
Maybe, one day we will see something as indepth as this beastiary/titles/cardcollecting/ingame achivments stuff. I am not gonna hold my breath though.
The only MMO ive played that had stuff like this was Everquest 2, it was truely addictive all the mini stuff you could do. From completing 100s of collections to killing mobs for titles, and it was all linked in with the player housing which was also one of the best player housing ive seen in an MMO. You would get rewards and trophies that you could display in your house.
We will see it. You just gotta BELIEVE

Being the FF bestiary nerd that I am - I really love this idea! One of the few things I liked about FFXIII was the small bit of information they had about the beasts whenever you fought them and with improved UI I think it would make for a great in-game plan as well as transferring onto the Lodestone page. Hope they think about putting this in!
Not sure I follow?
That segment of the post is a possible way to integrate a bestiary into more than just one aspect of the game. Why have a feature with only one purpose when it could accomplish multiple goals.
The entire post is mainly about the insitution of a Bestiary, the rest is the communities--as well as my--ideas on how it could be implemented. Having an idea is one thing, but knowing what it could grow into and how it could effect overall gameplay is another.
I see what you did there :pQuote:
The Materia system could easilly be combined with the new Materia system to obtain special types of materia.
Ahh I see now.
Yo dawg I heard you liked materia systems, so we added a materia system with your materia system so you could make materia while you system.
~Doh~
hehe, nice idea... remember this from some of the other FF games and it did give you a certain "gotta catch'em all" feeling...
Besides - our JP players are collectomaniacs, so they would definately support his as well!
signed and supported.
