This is the only MMO game that this happens to. I honestly don't believe it's DDoS at this point but just bad hardware at the hosting company and they don't want to replace it because it would eat into their profits a tiny bit.

Dumb question from a clueless EU player - does travelling to OCE mitigate this issue at all, or are you guys still DCing all over the place?
During the previous DDoS 'season' back in early november, I and half of my FC tried going to OCE on some days. It was okay for the most part. Interestingly enough, there was actually two days where a severe lag spike happened in OCE, and an actual DDoS over there. Both happened not long after NA side got DDoS'd. People were joking that it's probably to DDoS those who fled to OCE as soon as NA went down lmfao xD
So I guess I'd say.. yes, it does mitigate the disconnection at the very least, to an extent. It's still silly that you have to arbitrarily limit your access to some features just to avoid DDoS.
Yeah it's curious to me that people will chalk it up to a bad node in the middle of nowhere when no other service (that I use, anyway) has been having these issues.
I'd bet they downgraded some hosting service or moved to some cost saving equipment and now it's screwing them.
I don't buy the hardware failure theory for the very simple reason that "company cutting corners when it comes to mitigating cyberattacks" is just a bad coverup. Plus, folks have managed to find DDoS tracking that hits Sacramento at the same times we've had the outages.
It is very likely that the attack is targeting the NTT node, not squenix servers themselves. This is backed up by the fact that very often during these waves there will be swaths of players on PSN or a certain ISP who do not get booted or vice versa (I've been in parties where only half of us get booted several times). However since NTT is what they rely on for JP servers, it seems squenix is either unwilling or contractually unable to switch providers as a means of resolving the issue. Either way they should seriously reconsider their reliance on NTT in NA, this has been an ongoing issue for quite some time and offloading the responsibility to ISP is clearly not working.
Having to wait a few milliseconds for the NPC to begin talking isn't the end of the world, imo... much better than not being able to talk to them at all.
I played with 250+ ms ping for years (playing on EU server from across the ocean) so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it really isn't that bad, getting killed in casual content is pretty hard nowadays!
We should run a tally for the ddosing
last one at 8:50 pm est. Was in the middle of ranked :D
Must be DDoS o'clock
I was worried that I was going to clear the new Extreme Trial after having a 0.1% wipe on our previous attempt. We were right on pace this attempt, but thankfully the DDoS saved the day and stopped us in our tracks (or the train's tracks, I guess).
"DDOSS" Tally today: III
Nothing we can do about it please buy the FOMO mogstation slop.
DDOS attack again. 10:40 CST.
its not a DDOS... its our actual characters protesting against the continuing effort of the devs to turn them into drooling pablum eaters
DDOS makes it sound like it's not SE's fault somehow, I think it's an excuse. Don't have this problem with other MMO's. Maybe they have a more robust datacenter, one not vulnerable to every burp on the net :(
I'm an Aussie player and even being able to double weave wouldn't get me there, the server is beyond dead.
Ddos needs to be addressed on NA and I'm pretty sure it is DDOS because most of the time with my VPN on I'm totally fine and don't notice the lag and disconnect less.
... I sometimes feel like people read half of the posts at best...
The new dungeon has duty support. Barring the trial, it'd be possible to get your MSQ and some other solo activities done fine while on OCE, although the latency wouldn't be ideal of course. I was just asking if people were doing it again/suggesting they try it so they can at least watch their cutscenes without being interrupted by a DDoS.
I understood that. I was merely bringing a different angle why some folks still refuses to hang in OCE despite less disconnections. It’s not just being disconnected while they’re watching CS or progressing through new contents. Personally I haven’t touched any of the new contents besides crafting the new gears & spamming the new FL map with my friend. Ever since I swap my VPN ‘routing’ I just magically dodge all the disconnects (still get heavy spike though!), but not all are that lucky. But this still doesn’t mean that my activities are left unbothered. Now if I go to OCE, I doubt I’ll be getting the fast FL pops like I did in NA. I won’t be able to gather any of the new materials either because timed nodes does not appear to Wanderer/Traveler/Voyagers.
It just left a bad taste on our mouth X_X

DDos Tally for today: I
There's been 3 today already.
I'm getting pretty fed up with this. Out of every online service I've ever used this must be the most heavily ddosed thing I've ever come across.
At some point I have to blame square, because I'm sure lots of things get ddosed and withstand the attacks, these NA servers are not.
Hmm address this to the Orange Persons Best Friend...
Can they fix their sh*t already?

Surprised at how few people even care enough to complain any more. You should be demanding change.
Amen.
People need to complain more so this is taken more seriously, but people just shrug and play other games. Its why this has been an issue since before stormblood. Best thing we can do is keep the forum up so people remember to tap in and voice their fustration at this situation.
I'm not sure sufficient change can occur without either arresting somebody (if this is a DDoS), or a long-term game takedown (in the case of needing all-new server architecture).
Square Enix are pretending they don't know there is an issue and trying to pass it off as ISP issues.
I play here because I wanted to try the online Final Fantasy, the fact it's an MMO was just something I adjusted to. I wouldn't switch to WoW or anything so much as I would just stop playing.
What I wonder is if SE does swap to a different service provider for the NA servers, would that *actually* do anything to relieve DDOS issues in the long run. A part of me is so bloody jaded over this kind of cybercrime that I really don't see any solution that would actually fix it. Everything possible to my limited knowledge is just a few mitigation efforts, and we don't know if they're in place to an extent and the DDOS attacks are way worse than we know.
Unfortunately, Square-Enix has already engaged in self-sabotage of the NA servers when they moved them all to California thus causing latency issues for people on the east coast and more central parts of the USA. It also didn't do any favors for folks in Canada and Mexico (or Central & South America for that matter).
So it's fair to be concerned that their own fix could make things worse, but they also can't just keep ignoring the issue until it blows up. Like... PHYSICALLY blows up if their system is going down this fast under such strain.
One interesting thing to note when it comes to these ‘DDoS’ though, I recalled getting not so dissimilar DDoS in plenty of previous MMO I played in the past. But a lot of times they were merely giving me a large dose of lag spike for a good minute or two. After that everything just reconnects & catch up in hilariously ‘turbo fast’ mode. Disconnection was a rare occurrence. But in FFXIV it’s the exact opposite. Sometimes not even a DDoS, a simple one line of RTO in command prompt could easily make the game client ‘gives up’ trying to reconnect at all.
Please keep the servers up longer then a couple hours a day. Getting tired of paying for a game that is always going offline.
