No no, you don't understand. You see, she likes smiles and happiness.
Something like... "Don't be happy by yourself - be happy for me who is happy for you. Mine is the glee which will pierce the heavens!!"

I went into DT expecting the worst from the overall feedback but honestly... I really liked not having yet another nerd character metagarbling away at us, of which there are far too many as is.
Wuk was refreshingly grounded and sentimental.
I don't get the hate. She has annoying moments but a lot of people hating because of the VA. She's not as annoying as Zenos.
My opinion is that a lot of the hate comes from how she's always in-your-face in pretty much every scene in the game. Even when we were suppose to go off with Erenville, and the whole thing with Krile's parents, they managed to focus on her again instead of letting them have their moments. The expansion was hyped up for Krile especially so for her to barely get any story was kind of a let down and people blamed Wuk Lamt. Also Wuk Lamat comes off as a bit of a Mary Sue. Everything goes her way without her really even trying all that much.
As for the hate for the VA, I think that's really more about her performance than her as a person. Yes there are likely some that dislike her for who she is, but most didn't like the performance before they even knew who the VA was. For me personally, I felt the TONE of the VAs voice actually fit. I wouldn't expect a hulking lion lady to have a high voice. But the emotional performance is where I found it lacking. Some scenes needed high emotion and it just wasn't there. The scene where Galul Ja Ja (sp?) dies she was suppose to scream "PAPA!!" like she was emotionally devastated. But the VA just whispered it. I just feel the VA was a bit green and needed some refining on her work.
Anyway, sorry for the college essay. It's just all my opinion on things.
Wholly independent of the voice acting, Wuk Lamat as a character comes off as a poorly written self insert Mary Sue.
As much as I dislike Zenos as a character, I would much rather him return than deal with more Wuk Lamat. At least Zenos is treated in the story as a rival and the other characters treat him accordingly. Everyone, including the WoL, inexplicably adores Wuk Lamat in a way that feels completely unearned.
That's because first, it was appropriate to the story and Wuk Lamat wasn't sucking all the oxygen out of the room and second, the later action was immediately followed by BADASS CUTSCENE ACTION WoL. We can collectively forgive a lot when we get to see our character actually get to do something in a cutscene.
The back half of DT reminded me a lot of how I felt playing through Solaris in Xenogears. I would honestly not have been very surprised to have found out at some point that the pouches of vaguely grape-flavored slurry sold everywhere was actually made of corporeal aether.
I did get sick of Wuk Lamat's omnipresence, but she's not doing that now, so I don't mind seeing her show up occasionally anymore.
People just have an extremely tough time figuring out what exactly is wrong with Dawntrails story, so they usually jump to the easiest thing to complain about, which is wuk lamat.
In the future there is only 2 ways.
Either the story improves and people feel justified for hating wuk lamat or the story does not improve, even without wuk lamat so people seek out the next single thing that apparently is the sole reason for ruining it all.
Her brother is ill suited for leadership. He has the charisma of an oyster, isn't a people person (which isn't a character flaw, but certainly one to lead a country), and is actually pretty slow for everything that's not about science or technologically inclined tasks.
So, I liked her at first, but the longer the story went on, the more annoying she became, to the point I let out a groaning 'please no..' when we got to Solution 9. Then there is the whole 'peace peace peace peace " mantra wherever we go. The Dawntrail trial was fun..until she pushed her way in. During Patch 7.1 I think, there was a nice emotional scene between friends/family members talking about if one will be welcome back after leaving Solution 9... Then she shows up, record scratch on the music, whiplash on the emotional part to comedy about tacos.
She overstayed her welcome FAST. That's the big issue I see with her as a whole. There was no chance to step away and breathe, and let us be us. I said as much in a review I did for the expac last year.
I have been playing this game since 1.0 and never skipped a cs on my main and rarely on my alts and by the time Wuk took me to the aetheryte at around the lvl 94ish mark and started yapping on about peace and happiness I skipped my very first cs ever. I just could not take it anymore. And I have skipped every cs where she has appeared since and will continue to do so. I also just leave when I get Sphene's Burdan in roulette because she even ruins that fight for us with her insistant need for attention. If she even appears in the 8.0 trailer or presentations it will solidify my not buying the new expac.
The story overall killed this game for me and Wuk pretty much was the story with as much as she kept butting her nose into absolutely everything. I cannot justify playing the game when both content and story are as weak as they are in this expac and while I am willing to give XIV one last shot before I go full WoW, that shot will be ruined if that stupid cat rears her ugly face yet again.
Entire expansion together with all patches are pre-written and nobody's going to change them no matter how badly players cry. When 7.0 is released, team is already working on 8.0+.
So chances are big that first half of 8.0 will also be tightly intertwined with Wuk as well. Get ready.
Honestly if she's in 8.0 I won't buy it.
But its clear by looking at the later patch stories that they've already been "making up" reasons for Wuk Lamat to just not be on screen. The pushback on the character was across multiple regions. I'm not particularly concerned, and like I said if for some reason they were to really double down on her in 8.0, I just wouldn't buy it and that would be that. After how bad the Dawntrail story was I pretty much only subscribe to keep my house anyway.
Like I didn't like her in prepatch, but I was willing to give her a shot, but then they shoved her down my throat so much that by the end I was wishing I'd never actually bought the game. Then they went and ruined the final trial for me with the interruption and she pretty much solidified her spot as my most disliked video game character of all time.
I think if they would've just stopped using her so much then I might've at least been able to put up with it a little bit. But alas, she has more lines in a single expansion than other characters have had in over 10 years of dialogue. She also somehow made all the characters around her into worse versions of themselves.
Heck, honestly if I could've at least had the final trial to myself without her interruption that made zero sense at all, then I would've at least had that little bit of fun, and maybe I would've been not so annoyed.
Just cut her screentime down by like 90%
She wouldn't have been so bad if she wasn't the entire plot of dawntrail
I remember finding something interesting about the patches. Here was the article https://www.thegamer.com/final-fanta...ole-patch-7-3/
The one thing that I remember was this.
So the only things we can assume with this is that Wuk probably had a bigger part in these patches but after the release, they did what they could to reduce her presence after that.Quote:
He also tells me that Patch 7.1 through 7.3 were already written only a month after Dawntrail launched, so these plot points were decided well in advance of when we see them unfold on the screen.
However you only get one first impression and I just didn't care anymore after she appeared in 90 of the 100 Dawntrial MSQ quests.
She could have been but she seemed to go from strength to strength.
Wuk would of been fine if she had a more non linear way to power or a noticeable flaw with consequences. Koana had his whole system of beliefs turned upside down when he slowly started the realize that tech wasn't the solution to every persons problem and the whole story of the rise, fall, and slowly rerising of Bakool Ja Ja kinda dances circles around Wuk's story.
Its like they tooked Lyse's story and took away all the hurt and struggles she went through and presented it as Wuk Lamat's story.
It's not dislike for the character, it's overexposure to the character. She's there all the time, even when it doesn't make sense for her to be there. Koana was suited for Solution 9 and all the 7.1-7.5 patches, not her. She should be in Tuliyollal and Koana should be with us.
Makes me afraid for 8.0. I've never been so bored and stunned at the awful quality of the writing during an expansion as I have from 7.0-7.3.
Another problem I have with Wuk is that the character always took the safe way out and always magically avoided any bad side effects of their actions. There were several times where I was like, oh boy, here it comes, finally some conflict and then.. nope, safety check and all is good. There were absolutely no danger, risks or threats until Alexandria arrived and even then, we were always on safety rails where they always took the safe way out, to the point where it made the story terribly predictable and boring.
Then, at some point around Origenics in the MSQ, she talks about how she's never been to Sharlayan and wants to visit someday. She's an idiot. And there were plenty of points in the story to show that empathy that everyone in the story seems to pretend she has, but instead she just makes it about herself again. And for whatever reason, the Scions seem to think she's the best thing to happen to the planet. She comes off as someone that's way more interested in the idea of people and being a good person than someone interested in people or being a good person. There's no contrition, there's no clue-by-four to the face like Alphinaud gets with the Crystal Braves to nudge her away from it, we're just supposed to nod and grin while she acts foolish and selfish. This is half of 7.0 and there's enough of it to put her just below Alphinaud in words said since 2.0 despite only being part of one expac.
I don't have anything wrong with writing someone that claims to have this deep interest and love in people around them, only to find out that their interest is self-serving, or they're more interested in the idea of being a people person than the people themselves. There are plenty of people out there like that. Just don't have everyone else in the story buy in. There's no way all of the Scions would be that dumb, especially Krile, who gets a keyhole through the fourth wall like you do.
It makes sense, but we're talking about a studio that said "People loved Shadowbringers' story so let's speedrun our way through the end", so who knows whether or not that actually happened, or if this is just what people originally thought, competent people being promoted into hands-off position with incompetent people taking their place, and upper leadership getting bored to the point that quality control slips.
I don't think we will see much more of her from now on, considering how little we've seen of Lyse, Aymeric, Hien, and everyone else after we finished their storyline. Maybe some cameos here and there.
To be fair what people missed is that Lamat had a clear foil with the introduction of Endless Sphene once she got the throne. Endless Sphene was supposed to be a mirror to her, a leader that cares immensely for her population and would be ready to do anything for them. Anything.
And that's where the foil was, but the story didn't make anything of it because Lamat was never put in a similar situation where she would have had to take a long, hard look in the mirror. Like, having to destroy Alexandria, hurt their population, a "it's us or them" situation, or anything. This was never a thing. All Wuk did was "of course I'm not like that, I need to bring Sphene back to reason!" and that's where the writing lost the themes it tried to introduce and the character fell flat once more.
Koana could have worked but it would have changed the themes. Not that the themes were written properly or exploited well to begin with. But with Koana it would probably have needed for him to have Joraal as a foil instead of Endless Sphene. "Where are you ready to go in your pursuit of technology and efficiency in regard to your own population? Will you notice in time that your rationality doesn't account for the human side of society and you're losing all of its values in your blind pursuit of whatever you're trying to achieve?"
Could have been interesting too, though. I just think both characters in concept work in the second part of the story. It's just the writing that fell flat and didn't prove competent enough to exploit its own proposed themes.
I getcha' lol. I myself recalled writing about 40+ pages of rambling on a google doc listing things that I dislike or unsure about, just so I can replay NG+ couple of times at later date to let the story sink in and digest them proper, but for DT it never came to be.
I recall vividly he merely asks us to be her 'mentor', and nowhere he implies that he only wants Wuk to succeed.Quote:
[...]Didn't Gulool Ja Ja tell you he wanted Wuk Lamat to win after we dueled him in the throne room or am I mistaken?[...]
I wasn't fan of that rabbit mice introduction either, but at the very least the writer actually made effort to show our character & their companion's anxiety and impatience toward the Loporrits.Quote:
[...]Urgency has left the writing room since Endwalker[...]
In Living Memory, it might be better if they reverse the order i.e. let us explore first > visit Meso Terminal entrance > Sphene starts the countdown > Immediately goes into the dungeon. The lack of awareness on our characters & our companions was a huge dealbreaker to me.
I'm gonna echo what you wrote there: "all these things happen way too fast imo...I would've loved to explore these emotions".Quote:
[...]Another thing that bothered me is that everyone's turning into a copy of their parent. Koana, Wuk Lamat, Zoraal Ja, all one dimensional aspects of Gulool Ja Ja, Erenville immediately chooses to not be a gleaner anymore, same with Krile, all these things happen way too fast imo...I would've loved to explore these emotions [...]
Yes, that's another major issue with Dawntrail narrative: very quick to move past things that should've mattered more i.e. letting the character(s) stumble and fall so we can be there and push for them (Wuk watches her father get murdered and had her world turned upside down in a matter of seconds, but we get to "Tuliyollal will not fall, peace will prevail!"-speech pretty quickly after). This compounded by bland, repetitive dialogues that amounts to spending too much time saying many 'nothings' (why do we need to learn about soils in 3 different maps? First Kozama, second in Mamook, and third in Heritage lol).
Wuk as a character is only the most noticeable example of these issues the writer had displayed. Even if we remove her entirely, it still won't remove the fact that the writer put so much pressure to trying to write a predetermined outcome without supporting this with a believable and coherent build-up.
I got a non-Wuk example: Sphene proceed to perform her monologue after we dealt with Zoraal Ja. Am I supposed to believe no one would try to stop her when there's nothing holding them back from just charging in? Alisaie and Thancred was also there lol, why weren't they acting like... you know, Alisaie and Thancred? At least when Emet-Selch does this at the end of Mt.Gulg, he's got Exarch as a hostage & threaten to kill him if the scion dared to interrupt.
Sorry I rambled xD
I don't think its missed more that it was kinda out of place. To piggy back on Darko's point also, I think Sphene is more of a foil for Koana than Wuk Lamat. Koana learned that tech wasn't the answer to all problems where in Solution Nine was technology run rampant to the point where the population suffered to the point of near apathy.
Koana going to Solution Nine would have been a great story moment for him to see a clear possibility of his want for technological advancement and having Sphene go with him for his little train expedition could of helped both of them grow.
If Sphene was supposed to be a foil for Wuk then they did a worse job than I originally thought. Sphene's whole deal was helping people by any means. Sphene sacrificed and sacrificed. She gave up her kingdom to see it saved. Yes, Wuk cared for her people but she just blundered her way to being a ruler of Tural. Comparing Wuk to Sphene is like comparing King Harkinian to Rimuru Tempest.
EVERYONE is hating because of the VA. They'll lie to your face that that isn't the case, and then spout off some BS about the story (that they likely haven't even read) that contradicts itself and the actual text of the story (again because they haven't read it, but listened to some transphobe on youtube recount the story badly, one has already been posted in this thread too). They really sit there and say things like "Wuk Lamat just had a party instead of fixing the tribes wilting crops!" like y'all didn't pay ANY attention to the story did you, cause that ain't anywhere close to what happened.
Blundered her way into being ruler? Y'all really don't actually read the story do you? There is so much of it that you have to outright ignore to say this. You're ignoring all of Wuk's character growth over the story, ignoring every event leading up to her becoming ruler. It's incredibly disingenuous and anyone that has read the text knows that you're pulling this outta nowhere.
Nope, Wuk is just a poorly written character.
Go take a look at the Japanese, French, and German communities, there's similar dislike for the character because of the way she's written. They all have a completely different VA voicing the character in those languages, so your silly argument to excuse bad character writing doesn't work.
I believe Koana should've been involved at least on the first half of the Solution 9 part of the MSQ with Wuk Lamat then taking the front spot again due to her relationship with Sphene. Koana as a character has been quite wasted in the 7.0 story... to then have him do some questionable things in 7.1, such as trying to block the dinosaur with his bare hands instead of his ingenuity or just... his gun. That moment felt like a thing Wuk Lamat would do that they decided to change in the last second, perhaps due to the initial negative reaction, but it hurt Koana's established personality.
Would you be saying that if the VA wasn't transgender?
I don't think so.
So many things are going to be blamed on her if this goes as I expect.
Who cares if the VA is transgender? Honestly that isn't a part of the equation at all. Hell I don't even listen to the game on English VA for my initial playthroughs but JPN VA ((Bakool Ja Ja's JPN VA is hilarious)). The character is poorly written, that's a writing problem and has nothing to do with the Voice Acting at all. Granted, Wuk Lumat isn't the only poorly written character. DT is infested with them, it's just Wuk Lumat is shoved in our face constantly to the point where she has more lines in a single expansion than many primary characters have had across multiple expansions. This only magnifies the issues with the character and how much of a poorly written mary sue she is. I yearn for the day where I don't have another "Talk to Wuk Lumat" quest objective and have to read the character's poorly written peace spiel for the umpteenth time. Again, all counter to the English VA because I don't play any content or MSQ with English VA the first time around, but with the JPN VAs.
This, please.
I play with JP voices, and her JP VA really done the best she can, sadly it wasn't enough to save the character of Wuk Lamat. I played through ARR-EW 5 times and never missed a cutscene, but playing DT the second time.. nope, I just couldn't do it, I skipped every cutscene with Wuk Lamat in it. It's not only that she's everywhere and everything seems to revovle around her, which is extremly tiresome by itself, but as a character she's written very immaturly and resembles more a fanfiction character than a legitime part of FFXIV story. The whole expension MSQ felt like "playing safe", without any real painful consequenses, which is not how I felt with previous MSQs.
They really need to delete her from further story arcs, please.
My whole opinion on the expansion is that it wasn't that great not just because of one character, I think they could have done interesting things with wuk lamat but she was overused and fell under a lot of generic tropes
Do I think DT (the story) is the worst? Nope no one can convince me ARR was better, but It was certainly not a good story or enjoyable for me. Was it because of wuk lamat? Yes and No the character was kinda annoying throughout 7.0 and I don't think the WOL should be side lined but at the same time I think that applies to the entire story just being bad, Wuk lamat is DT's scape goat on why it's "bad" because she has so many lines in it.
Do I think removing Wuk lamat will fix the story? no. Frankly the main issue i have with the story is the scions and not wuk lamat, as long as we drag along the scions there will never be any sort of serious stakes where you don't know what will happen with characters, it also limits us to meet like very little characters like wuk lamat and have the entire story revolve around them rather then the story focusing on a group and their conflict and how they work with the WOL (Think back to SHB, The first expansion to properly utilizes the scions for character growth outside the twins). The problem is they've written themselves into a corner with these fake out scenes we all know the scions will be fine, we all know they've finished any sort of development so they come in to say zaney in character one liners for DT then we move on.
The "Solution" to the story is to move away from scions give focus to multiple new characters and obviously the WOL's importance rather then being a side line mercenary mentor who doesn't do much but help the real protagonist. Depending on legacy characters to make the story interesting gets you no where, if they do decide to add new 1-2 characters but keep the scions expect them to get a bunch of lines and every other quest being "speak to X" because they know they can't depend on scions for a actual story anymore.
I'm a queer demisexual heavily invested in the LGBTQ+ community. My FC was all LGBTQ.
The VA is not the problem.
The writing is the problem.
She had to read crappy script for this game and unfortunately she got the blame.
Her hands are clean, it's the script writers that people hate.
Wuk Lamat's voice sounded like a cheese grater to my ears. On the other hand, the only VA in Dawntrail I actually liked was Gulool Ja Ja's, so pretty damned sure it has nothing to do with anyone's transness. The VA work was just not very good this time around.
Im still confused on what we mentored just so people know if you use a DPS <- meter tool and you look on final fight wuk does 35 million damage what a mary sue :D I wish i could drop 35 Million damage like that... would literally make raids easier lol. But yeah.......................im sure 8.0 will have wuk lamat come back to annoy us and kill more sub numbers. :D
