- Even among the FF family, it's not unheard of. FF Tactic the Ramza is a "shadow influence" but not seen as the main character from a narrative perspective. In FF12 Van is like an NPC that provide a window into the story for the players with very little story relevance.
The point is ... it's ok for the an NPC to be the main character, as long as it's very well written. They have to be something that the players can genuinely and holistically empathize with, who we gladly play a support role for, not being forced or hamfisting into that role. Naturally, an NPC who gonna be the main character will have to meet a higher standard than a side NPC. The problem is WL's writing not only does not meet that elevated standard, it actually fell well below even the average.
