As someone with disabilities, I find this will help alot with my dislike for combat as there's too many buttons and I cannot move around the kboard fast enough for those skills.
You are a heck of a gatekeeper in alot of things including optional options, you are an extremely selfish individual and there's not just you, I see a few contenders on these forums for that, as someone who doesnt usually participate in the forums and I have been playing ffxiv since day one im open to options for people, you people are gatekeepers and thankfully a very tiny minority in your elitist attitudes.
The margin of error in 111 or 123 is the same and it comes from suddenly misclicking the wrong button. Nobody breaks a 123 combo because they are too stupid to know what the next button is.
If pressing a filler is too boring, maybe rotations should consist of more than just fillers 90% of the time?
You've been playing this game since day one and yet:
The only one gatekeeping you here is yourself, how the hell can you prefer WoW a game where the slowest specs require 2 times the APM of an XIV job but somehow combos are now suddenly too much? You just admitted you just straight up don't like the combat, no amount of simplification or merging is gonna change that.
And that goes to all you Expert roulette mains and Normal warriors I'm tired of pretending I care about you, you're never gonna actually dive in and do harder content you're just gonna continue shitting your pants in normal raids even when jobs are down to 1 button and all the stress has been hyper-migrated to the high-end content which will have 30 body checks per second and 10 different types of hello limit cuts with 2 rows of debuffs and you've successfully created your own personal hell which you will never even dare to participate in.
And don't give me that elitist crap I'm semi casual or midcore at most, I just happen to actually do things when I log in. and I want my jobs to be fun and engaging for when I have spend 100 hours wiping.
also thank god this dumb button merging has almost been confirmed to have been a translation error and won't work on weaponskill combos, it's only gonna be for specific abilities and spells. We may have 1 more expansion before we are tortured like healers.
Awww the combat in ffxiv is awful, and I see you here CRYING everyday and defending bad systems (I should also point out You literally live on these forums from my POV) , luckily as I said your kind are a minority and just very vocal but if everythings so good right now why are you here ALL THE TIME?
Oh also nice post stalking my point still stands, welcome to ignore.
Honestly good riddance to skills hogging 1 extra slot that can only be used after you used a specific other skill. That dragoon change back in the day where they split the high jump skills was a prime example - they should have introduced the system back at that point in time.
Now we only have to get rid of skills that have an exact copy of said skill but aoe... another additional button you could just update animation, add splash damage and have 1 free skill slot for unique job skills that isn't yet yet another 300potency ogcd damage/heal
That said I think healers won't really benefit from that change in the long run and they will have to come up with something that helps with their button bloat soon
To me the margin of error comes from the servers simultaneously asking you to mash the fuck out of your next button and occassionally double-firing or just eating your input due to latency.
I used to struggle with this a lot when I started out, the game really needs better servers or certain settings that allow for better skill buffering, especally for us not fortunate to live next to all of the servers which are all crammed in the west coast.
This is great.
I, for one, certainly appreciate your strong stance against disability-friendly features based on not wanting your raids to get messed up by... <checks notes> ...ah, yes... by "pants-shitting normal players you don't even care about."
Did I get that right? I'm pretty sure that was the gist.
Here's some honest life advice: you need to de-couple your sense of self from whether or not you can complete video game raids on "Savage." Because one day this could happen:
((TIME WARP NOISE))
"I'm home! I picked up the groceries, honey!"
"Thanks, sweetheart! So glad you're home! I missed you, my little nutterbutter!"
"I missed you too, love of my life!"
"Hey, so, schnooky-wooky - you used to play Final Fantasy 14, didn't you?"
"Oh, yeah! That was a lot of fun!"
"What was your character's name?"
"Zira Zira, I think..?"
"Haha, cute name!"
"Thanks, I liked it! It was... what are you doing..?"
"I was just looking it up in Google! Wanted to see what you got up... to... when..."
"...Sch... schnookums..?"
"This... this can't be right. This says... there's someone with that name raging out on their forums. That... that wasn't you, right..?"
"Hah. Haha. Me? No."
"But... they have that name."
"It must have been someone else!"
"But... there's only one 'Zira Zira' in the whole game!"
"..."
"...and here she keeps talking about people crapping their pants! You KNOW how strongly I feel about pants-crapping jokes after that after the incident I had at Six Flags!"
"...honey, it was a long, long time ago! I..!"
"And after that OTHER incident I had at Denny's that time!"
"And at the beach."
"...and at the beach!"
"And at Kroger."
"I HAVE VERY SENSITIVE BOWELS."
"It's what I love about you!"
"DON'T PATRONIZE ME!"
"B-but, my cuddle bear, I..!"
"I... I'm sorry! I didn't mean to snap! But I... I really need to think about this. You're not the person I thought you were."
"N-no! I'm not like that any more!"
"I don't know. I need time to think. I'm taking the kids and heading to my parents' place for a while."
"No! You can't take Blodwyn and Stubert!"
"I'm sorry. I just... I feel very strongly about this. Especially after that time it happened at my cousin's wedding."
"And our wedding."
"You said you loved me MORE for that! WHO EVEN ARE YOU?!"

So I guess what I'm saying is: I like this as a feature, if for no other reason than disability accessability. And my pants are fine!
Popped my head into this thread to see how the discussion was going and what the heck did I just read?
MMO mice are excellent accessibility devices. I use one for just this reason.
Anyhow, on the topic, I would imagine having a 1-2-3 combo on one button would present issues when an enemy dodges an attack. This does happen--what then, would happen to the combo? Would you have to commit to following it through even though you've lost all potency and combo benefits, or would it automatically reset for you?
No clue what that was above lol. I am happy that some people would appreciate this being a feature. Perhaps with more discussion they might consider it.
Pros:
less button bloat (especially for controllers)
Easier for people that have disabilities
Cons:
Everything is a combo so getting cut off mid combo might be unfortunate. Fix:Maybe a little wait and it restarts from the beginning would suffice
I wonder if it will be locked to combos, or will it be more like WoW's castsequence macro command, where it can chain any group of actions together, one firing per button press. The icon on the macro button changes to represent each action, and it has a timeout feature that will return you to the start of the sequence if you don't finish the it in the number of seconds you specify.
To me, the merging feature is mainly a way of reducing button bloat IF it lets you marge them all onto one screen button and mapped key.
the way i see it the vast majority of 1-2-3 combo's, if not literally all of them, are no more complex or involved than just hitting a single button over and over. They are a time gating mechanic, not a skill check. You get the resource to do the real thing on the 3rd part, I couldn't even imagine a situation where even a small combo efficacy bonus from resetting to 1 manually would outweigh losing the third part resource.
In my mind reducing them to however many buttons as their are branches would only accomplish a single thing, freeing up prime button real estate for the actually interesting parts of a jobs mechanics.
either that or cut out busywork stuff like the 60s buffs and just rolling the potency into the 60s skill rotation. they don't really serve any purpose either outside of a button that lights up to tell you start the burst without needing a stopwatch or somesuch
honestly, i don't really care how they do it. Button bloat is getting out of hand and my arthritis would far prefer a heavyhanded approach then back off a bit as necessary rather than pruning 2 buttons just to add 3 more
