i wouldn't worry too much there are plenty of different types of swords to use, they have also taken a sword type from gld before so they could always do that if worst comes to worst.

I wish I shared your optimism lol, but between 1H swords (PLD, RDM), 2H swords (DRK, SAM), gun-swords and soon 2!! swords, I'd say that ship has sailed.
Ideally I would've loved a longsword DPS (closest video game example would be Geralt's from Witcher or whatshisface from Tales of Arise, whose fighting style I'm pretty sure they based on the former) but, if FFXVI is any indication, the devs still can't tell the difference between a (for example, arming) sword and a longsword, or a longsword and a greatsword...
I guess there's... legally-distinct lightsabers? (a few Allagan robots wield something like them already) still, but for variety's sake it'd probably be for the best if they just made it a mace wielder or something.
I mean, if swords are what they wanted to go with, there will always be more room for them..especially since they really only need to care about 20 levels of it. Don't even need to worry about other jobs having a similar item (eg. we have a Saber-esque Katana)
Stuff like Scimitars, Sabers (Calvary type, not the fencing type), Kopesh, Shotel, Cutlass... They can also just make stuff up like the Switchaxe from Monster Hunter... Sword..Lance? I dunno.
There's various subclasses of swords they could utilize. For example they could lock PLD into using either a longsword or bastard sword and have a different job use scimitar style swords similar to how RDM is specifically using rapier/epee style swords. Even with 2H swords they could do something similar to Elden Ring where it had greatswords, curved greatswords, and colossal swords.
A holy/celestrial dd, or some kind of charlatan (maybe illusion themed). I would also like a true ranged battle mage with fast attackspells that can move all the time.
I've got a thing for this very niche kind of character who wields two giant swords via telekinesis and is able to fling them around effortlessly both in close ranged or from afar. I guess the closest analogue I can think of off the top of my head is Ramlethal Valentine, just, y'know, without the laser beams and such. Or with them, who knows.
It'll never happen, but I'll take that.
