San d'Oria's music drove me crazy and was probably one of the reasons i quit the game.( Next to deleveling, not being able to solo and being an unwanted class)
But as long as another track like that isnt in a major area that i am constantly in i'll be fine with it.
BAGPIPES
I think the music in FFXIV is great! The sound of rain along with the Thanalan will be one of the best memories I will have of the game ever. Starting in Ul'dah, and going out to that music... I really felt like I was about to start a great adventure ♥ Toto-Rak had such great unique music too!
I do agree some songs tend to sound a bit generic, but for the most part I have no complaints ♫
Three composers, all now listed in the game credits, have taken Nobuo's place since 1.18. Some of the new tracks are still Nobuo's, such as the Castrum Novum theme, as they were among the original 76 tracks he made but no place had been found to suit them previously.
So far the new work turned out has been pretty great, the RotZ co-composer doing some of our beastman music while Mizuta pulls out his own and some Hamauzu style building strings and great ambiance. Allegedly Good King Mog was Nobuo's composition, but I don't know where to check that.
On a side-note I wish they would add a few more tracks per major zone, following a similar theme but definitely distinct. Not separated by sub-area typically, but having more to do with what the character is and has been doing lately, maybe even slightly based on the weather, in a sort of fluid merging of each of the tracks.

XI had far better Zone music,

Yep. Tahrongi Canyon had a great theme to it, all right.

Just listen to the epic score of Dangruf Wadi!
You could at least try not to come off as biased.

100% agree.
FFXI's music added so much flavor to the zones.
FFXIV's music is getting better though. Cid's theme is pretty awesome.

Nostalgia aside, if you've heard the orchestrated versions of FFXI's tracks you'll probably find them musically superior to most of what XIV currently has to offer. Gustaberg being a prime example (back in the day, I DAT swapped all of XI's original tracks out with their orchestrated counterparts).
XIV's tracks aren't bad, they just aren't anything special. They also lack variation (they don't loop well).
The main issue here though is mismatching the tracks with zones, and the general lack of zones full-stop. It was nice when different camps/areas were given their own tracks, but with everyone spending 99% of the time in a handful of areas the music has to be superb to stop people reaching for the mute button...
Why lie?
My biggest gripe about the music in FFXI was that it was non-existent in half the friken zones.
In FFXIV? Each region has it's own music set, including field, battle, and leve music.
FFXI had 1 theme for an area outside an immediate town, battle, party battle, dungeon party battle. Xarabard, and Shadowlord Keep.
FFXIV dosen't have FFFXI's 'feel' for tracks because it isn't FFXI, it has it's own amosphere. And if you think it's lacking it, listen again.

So no.... I don't want FFXI's feel in FFXIV. FFXI's feel felt like 'everything is the same' except for very choice situations and areas for quite a bit into the game's development.
Does FFXI have some good music? Yes, some. But FFXIV has already produced more quality tracks than FFXI pulled out in its first three years.
...yes, I never said it wasn't the actual game music. I can read "FFXIV OST" quite well, thanks. But since Nobuo's replacement following 1.18, Mizuta is one of three composers who could have composed it, and my best guess from among the three. I was just mentioning jokingly how much it feels like some of his other works, except that I found the sound quality to be improved by quite a bit over FFXI.
Can I visit these forums just once without reading something crazy?
FFXIV's only good tracks are the more recent ones by Mizuta, a few zones, a couple of battle themes, and all of the boss themes (this is the only aspect of FFXIV's OST that trumps XI's). After they changed the music to fit different parts of the map it was acceptable, but the zone and town music, for the most part, is straight doodoo compared to XI's. Ul'dah and Thanalan are perfect examples of tracks that absolutely do not fit the setting whatsoever.
I also like how you compare a general boss theme for RoTZ to XIV's Ifrit/Garuda themes, which is kind of unfair considering the context. Why not Warriors of the Crystal, Awakening, or Ragnarok? Those are major boss fights in XI (just like Ifrit/Garuda are the "endgame" fights in XIV) unlike summons.
Anyway, I definitely want some more Naoshi Mizuta in XIV. I'll probably just get hit with the nostalgia card, but FFXI's setting and atmosphere was MUCH more polished (yes, even before CoP/ToAU/WoTG) than XIV's is, and the soundtrack is a major contributor to the general feel of XI's world.
Honestly I just can't wait for them to scrap this current ugly Eorzea and trot out the redesigned landscapes while hopefully replacing some of the music as well.
Keep in mind that Uematsu had VERY little to go off of for composing his tracks. They probably hardly even gave him the concept art and then told him he needed to make tracks for a port city, a desert city, and somewhere in the forest....
Regardless, there are some damn good tracks off the original soundtrack he made. For example:
- This song that doesn't play anywhere but character creation, very inspiring song.
- Another song that doesn't play anywhere except for a small snippet in the beginning cutscene
- This song doesn't really fit the daytime, but if you're running around Thanalan at dusk/dawn/nighttime and see the camp on the horizon, it's amazingly fitting.
- My favorite battle track in the entire game.
- Another good battle track
- This one is VERY Final Fantasy-esque. Reminds me of boss fights from IX and VII.
- I love this song. It's very peaceful and quiet. Should be the Inn-room music IMO. Too bad it only plays during a few cutscenes :(
- Reminds me of Faris.
- Another good piratey-sea track. Apparently it plays in Mistbeard Cove.
- This one is nice and calm. Reminds me a bit of Jenova. Would be nice background music to a long explanation of Dalamud IMO. Also reminds me of the anime Kaiba for some reason.
- Of course the Christmas music is nice, too. Reminds me of FFTactics Advanced.
- Original Chocobo Theme, now for Rental Chocobos. It honestly is much better than the Personal Chocobo theme we have now >.>
- Reminds me of DTB/Cowboy Bebop. No idea what happened to this track. Seems like something that would fit Hildibrand.
- I don't think this song plays in the game either, but I also haven't gotten very far. Seems like really good music to fight the Garleans.
- Toto-rak's music I believe. Was from the original soundtrack but wasn't used anywhere in the game before then?
- Again a good song. Reminds me of fighting Gabranth in FFXII. Would be good for fighting Legatus or another high-ranking Garlean on one of their weird flying machines IMO.
- I love this song. It's really epic and uplifting. I think it's in the game right now but I can't remember where for the life of me.
- I don't think this is played anywhere in-game either. But it's a really epic track.
- This one REALLY reminds me of FFIX for some reason. Another good song. I seem to remember it being in the main story cutscenes at one point, but not at a particularly dramatic moment xD
- This is a nice sea song, too, but unfortunately I only remember it playing with that horrible loser Sisipu....I hate Sisipu. Reminds me of the beach from Chrono Cross.
- This is a nice song. Don't know where it plays, though.
- Don't know where this plays either. I remember it being in one of the Grid cut scenes a while ago.
- Also no idea where this plays. Seems like it would fit somewhere in Gridania though.
- Coerthas. All that needs to be said.
- Another good song for a boss battle. Don't know where/if this is in the game though.
- Don't know where this is in the game, either. But it seems like it would fit a Grand Company.
- Another song that apparently only gets put into some cutscenes. Reminds me of Wonderland from original KH
- Don't know where this plays. But I would love to hear it somewhere in Gridania.
- Another really good song. Apparently plays during the WHM AF gear quests.
So yeah there are a lot of really good tracks that Uematsu made. Just not a lot of them are used outside of the terrible mainstory cutscenes or very specific fights.
Anyone else hear little bits of Hamlet Defense and Garuda's Fight both in Nobuo's track 20, not to mention many other assortments of awesome stuff? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBWrC...feature=relmfu
Honestly, if post-2.0 starts bringing in more from the behind the Empire's front, I'd like to hear some Takaharu Ishimoto -- the guy who's made his own style off FF7 as shown through Crisis Core and later Type-0, both beautiful works with a pretty heavy grasp of emotion along with a great feel for the areas and/or situations his songs are played in.
I just turn off the music and play generic d&b most of the time. Fits better than what's already in the game!
