I wasn't trying to defend them, but offer an alternative theory. It's not that uncommon at larger companies. Of course, this is all anecdotal evidence working at larger companies that deals with their own DC for the last 1.5 decades.
It's however one of those things we will never know how their setup looks like until they tell us or we work in SE maintenance teams.
That's why I suspect their housing servers are on an ancient setup from the early 2010s.
In theory, it shouldn't be difficult for them to expand wards but for how long can they do that?
