Personally, i'm in the camp of "let them do what they do." I would rather the devs have a clear direction and just keep the course over making every side trip along the course trying to appease everyone. That's how WoW fell and I really hope Yoshida doesn't want to copy WoW, right down to it's faults.

I'm just happy the guy's stepping down. Will it make a difference? Probably not, but man does it make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Same goes for the absorption of Luminous Productions after Forspoken was DOA. Again, it probably won't make a difference, but I love to see it regardless. It's an admission of failure, even if they are trying to spin it another way. The shareholders clearly aren't happy, and they have every right to be upset. The list of blunders is a mile long at this point, and that started well before Forspoken launched. If FF 16 fails, SE could be in some serious trouble.

A lot of their new games are flopping hard, mostly the somewhat smaller ones, remasters and remakes that are getting a positive reception, but those don't tend to really stay in the spotlight as long as a good AAA title would.

Unironically Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default 2 were probably the biggest recent hits from Square, and they started off as Nintendo Switch exclusives which likely didn't help them.

For better or for worse 16 won't fail. Yoshida did what he does best as a producer, which is chasing what is the trendy gameplay style to copy, make it more streamlined and dress it up in Final Fantasy references and characters.

Time will tell. I hope it does succeed. Unfortunately, just because Yoshi P has been working on it himself, that doesn't guarantee success.

I actually hope 16 does fail then they can finally open their eyes and realize that all the games they have been making are subpar.

Almost feels like people can't see the creator, the company, and the development team as all separate entities when in relation to the game..,

Media Coverage by not only the interviewers and "Content Creators"(Had to " " cause people like to make the low quality joke) has tempered many expectations of the Normal Audience for sure.

So at the very least, those that do take interest. Might at the very least get their money's worth.

Yep. FF XIV tends to suffer (more than usual) when SE has a major project in their pipeline, and this time it has been made slightly worse. I really do want FF 16 to succeed, but I also want FF XIV to continue to do the same. In my opinion, the quality of FF XIV has been going downhill for a while, and I really want it to get back on the right track.

I completely disagree with your sentiment on this. First you are assuming that SE would see that as the reason for the game failing. I wouldn't be shocked if they looked at it with the mindset of HD games being a dying thing and push further into NFTs or mobile games. It could also have an impact on CBU3 budgets and make content in FF14 even worse off.

For the record, I'm hype about XVI and hope it does great. It looks amazing and totally up my alley. I just wish I didn't have the sinking feeling that XIV has somehow suffered because of it.

Octopath 2 doesn’t appear to have flown off the shelves like Octopath 1 did either, but it is enjoying massively positive reviews and word of mouth right now, so it’s likely to have crazy long term legs.

I think the most successful RPG they released last year was Triangle Strategy, which they said broke 1 million.

Harvestella seems to be getting some decent feedback as well, even though it's not a huge success. I plan to snag that one when I'm able.

The latest sales figures I can seem to find for Bravely Default 2 is the Switch version selling about a million copies at the end of 2021.
Not exactly a giant success, but at any rate I imagine their sales for slightly smaller Switch games are beating PC, PS and Xbox AAA releases in revenue... Something I imagine the investors aren't too happy with.

I wonder how much money they spent on something like Forspoken, and how much of it has it made back as sales aren't exactly on an upwards trend on it...

I wanted to like Harvestella more than I did but Stardew Valley spoiled me real hard on farming/harvest moon style games.

The corporate side of most companies is very bad because it is an own universe decoupled from the rest of the world. SQEX's obsession with NFTs is a good sign for it. The higher level managers think, that NFTs are the newest and hottest sh*t, even when NFTs are already done because of too much scam.

What I hate about the corporate side of Square-Enix is how biased they are when it comes to punishing mistakes.

Sakaguchi made one blunder, in form of a movie. Sakaguchi is demoted and steps out. The person who pretty much saved the company from disappearing in its early years.
Hiromichi Tanaka was directly responsible to many of Squaresoft's great classics since the NES era and what for more than 10 years was Square Enix's biggest money maker. Gets treated like crap because he was asked to rush an unfinished MMORPG out the door and didn't want to look for the competition for inspiration and leaves the company.

Meanwhile Matsuda has been the president for years despite blunders and mistakes under him. Wada stayed with the company for over a decade despite crazy antics like making everyone move because of superstition.
And people like Yoko Taro get treated like genius despite taking 4 straight commercial flops under the same company before they make a successful game.

Meh. Apparently Kiryu, before he started to work at Squenix, he was the CEO of Dentsu Innovation Initiative, a business group exploring exciting opportunities in, among other things, the metaverse....
