Also just commenting, I think it's funny (and sadly, disappointing) that the name of the Hrothgar race is Norse, but as far as I'm able to tell, neither of the existing Clans seems to have any Nordic influence? There seems to be a decent Russian influence, as well as Germanic (which I suppose is some connection), but I'd definitely dig a clan more aligned with the old Norse, "viking" sort of culture. And I feel like that would mesh absolutely perfectly with more of a "Wolf" clan for the Hrothgar.
In general, I like the idea. The new areas we would explore in the game could bring to us these new variations, since all clans we have access are based on in the Eorzea, Dalmasca and Othard areas.
About the Hrotghars, I think a "wolfy" one won't happen. We already have a notion of a race of wolfy people at Doma. So, to make something similar or a mix between hroths and them would not be interesting to develop...
Miqo'tes from Meracydia could have a new pattern of furry areas in their bodies (the same goes for Vieras and maybe Hroths) like necks or shoulders or feet or whatever.
I hope Meracydia would bring more "wild and tribal" environments and cultures with new jobs like xaman or druids of the forest and those new clans with similar themes in their clan traits. It would be nice :)
This would definitely make people who want something closer to FF11's Mithra a bit happier. Maybe also keep them away from discussions on unrelated races in turn :p I don't know how differently they could make Hrothgar fur, but at least for Miqo'te it'd be an idea that's much easier to execute.
For a wolf-related Hrothgar, as cool as that'd be and as much as (I think) Yoshida said before there'd be canine-looking options, they have far too many Panthera traits for it to suddenly change. When you factor in the Lupines, I doubt canids would be an option.
I don't even want to suggest "mixing" Lupines and Hrothgar due to the implications. Not just because they'd be furry races, but because it'd open the can of worms that are mixed races in general, such as Half-Elezen Half-Hyurs. We know they exist. But we don't know the extent they'd be allowed to exist. Plenty of combinations would make some portions of the FF14 playerbase uncomfortable.
If Hrothgar are going to get any kind of new clan, it should be something that looks more like the Ronso they were based on. Taller and a bit leaner, with more pronounced horns and no inexplicably bad posture.
I can't stand Hrothgar as they are now, but a variant that is just Ronso ported over? Yeah, that I'd be cool with.
Also, survey will definitely accept Garlean as a Hyur clan option. >_>
Ronso from FFX should've been a direct translation to FFXIV's Hrothgar. They're giant, they're atheletic and definitely their posture are infinitely better than the sad excuses we have in the game. Also their faces would look much better, never liked how they modeled some of the Hroth face types. One of them I swear feels like an Oblivion Khajiit
Ackchyually... it's Anglo-Saxon :p "Hrothgar" is the Anglo-Saxon version of the Norse "Hroar". Which is odd because...
Gunnhildr is indeed Old Norse.
...so idk what our devs are trying to accomplish, but it seems Germanic, Nordic and Slavic all kinda count?
But we're only told of the Slavic names for the Source. Germanic names like Magnus and Norse names like Runar tend to be more associated with the First.
...and then there's the fact that Misija Votyasch is a Hrothgar name |D I know people can adopt, but given how caste societies work and how there's virtually no indication there's any relation going on with Hrothgar ancestry... yeaah. And I checked: Roegadyn NPCs have their normal "Eorzean-style" nomenclature in Gangos. So this isn't a "Bozjan naming thing".
Hrothgars are a design mess xD consistency dove out the window.
For the record, I'm also totally on board with Hrothgar getting more of a FFX Ronzo "look" to them. I feel like that would be more appropriate for "The Lost" clan, given it sure seems like they're supposed to be that.
As far as there being any kind of issue with them having both canine and feline "counterparts", you could totally chalk those differences up to being distant cousins. All playable races are theoretically descended from the Ancients, so it's unlikely the Hrothgar are SPECIFICALLY related to cats anyways, so some appearing more canine would surely make just as much sense.
Beyond that, I'd probably give them proper "fur" to cover their whole bodies, not just their shoulders and forearms. Maybe longer, more wild-looking braids and whatnot for their "hair", or even just mohawks, but just more savage-looking in general?
Standing by my original statement.
I really love their general stature and animations (save for their standing animation being *so* uptight), but it would definitely be nice to not have to worry about their horns and tail throwing off their look.
It's why I feel kind of "stuck" using the Xaela, because the Raen's ivory-colored tail and horns don't quite mesh with a lot of the darker-looking armor. But at the same time, I wish my character could have a brighter, warmer skin-tone for use with those more "casual/modern" outfits.
I love the Raen options in general (skin tones, plus the brighter eye colors), but like I said, they just kinda ruin the look when paired with darker sets.
I probably wouldn't mind having sharper jaw options, though. It's hard to tell because of the scales, but their jawlines do seem like they're kind of soft.
Back during the allied race fever thought it might be cool to have wild clans for each race. Like Au Ra getting the demonic looking concept art, miqote getting fuzzy mithra treatment, lalafell getting those small moogle-kin look or vivi (mammet/yuke like), Viera might get like lions rabbit, etc. Hroth wild clans could just be a more direct translation of FFX lol.
The Au Ra concept art was always really cool..
Don't care much for new Clans vs upgrading existing once with more
- More Eyes/Face options
- Obtainable Hairstyles
- Facial Hair options
- Tail and Ear options
Then they also need to fix most hat options for Vierra / Hrothgar. Make female Hrothgar race, there's just a lot more that probably needs to be done before... Clans.
Anything that involves new character models, like a "highlander" version of other races is very likely never going to happen again. It's been said before that adding races is an exponential challenge because that exacerbates the amount of animation work needed for nearly everything in the game, and animation is the most expensive and time-consuming aspect of video game design. It's not impossible that they can change their mind later down the line, but I would not place any bets on getting anything else in that regard.
That said, having alternative clans that do not change animations or have an effect on clothing are certainly more plausible, like half-Elezen Hyurs like Hilda, and I think having more mixed race options like that in which the base model does not change could be a cool thing to see, though there are still some limits as to what races you could have mixed characters from that wouldn't involve changing the base character model. I wouldn't hold my breath on anything like half-Lalafell, half-Hrothgar, half-Roe, or probably half-Viera. Miqo'te, you might be able to get away with something like Hyurs with Miqo'te facial markings or noses, but the tails and ears are probably a no-go.
Clans wouldn't be changing anything. The only differences are entirely cosmetic: look at Raen and Xaela auri: the only difference is the scale colour and what skintones are available. There are very little differences in some other aspects of character creation, like the ear clasps on elezens, but most of those changes are entirely cosmetic and wouldn't require new skeletons. The most the devs may need to do for, say, Garlean hyurs, would be to port human ears on to elezen bones, which they've already done. It's not a huge undertaking for them to do that compared to an entirely new race with gear that needs to fit correctly - all of that has already been done. As it stands EW gave regular, non-tall Garleans as well, they're just midlander hyur that have the third eye. Add in some minor customization for a third eye on midlanders, maybe highlanders, and bam, you have the third 'clan'. Give the option to be super tall with the elezen bodyset, and that'd be even better. Nothing would change since all of those already exist.
There's plenty they can do without needing to create new racial skeletons since all of the clans are the same base type, just different customizations. I'm hoping in the future they update some of the older animation sets since they look clunky compared to some of the newer ones, but that's a future thing, not a need now thing (for me, personally).
@rainichan:
Exactly what I'm saying. I think this would be a nice middle-ground, where we still get "new" options, but without a ton of dev time.
I'd like to maybe see a slightly more relaxed standing animation for the Xaela (or even just the new clan), but otherwise mostly sticking in line with what we already have. Some new Face options might be great, as well.
I've been wanting this for so long lol. Like, yeah, this character creator was very robust for 2013, and it was even better than the 1.0 one. But now compared to even mobile games, it definitely needs some work on it. Third clans have been mentioned in some things iirc, so it's not hard to imagine them going "here's MORE cool stuff for you with some cool lore". I'm holding out for this at Fanfest, but we'll see what we get.
I honestly think those female Au Ra look freaking SICK!!!
Heck, maybe that's the way they could go for a new Au Ra clan; one where the woman are larger (maybe using the Female Roegadyn or upcoming Female Hrothgar rig, slightly more feminine animations), and giving the males the smaller body, like the male Viera rig but even smaller?
Like I said, absolutely not trying to suggest anything that would involve a crazy amount of work. *Some* work will be involved no matter what, but I feel like you could really get a lot of bang for your buck with things like these, kind of leveraging options we already have in various ways.
And you don't even have to use any of my specific ideas. I just think adding a new Clan for each race would drum up a lot of excitement, but I would *think* would be a whole lot less work than actual new races, which seem highly unlikely (and frankly, probably not necessary) at this point.
I would definitely dig a slightly thinner, more canine-looking version of the Hrothgar, though. Seems funny they went with another cat-like appearance for a race.
