What do you think will happen to a failed data center?

I can't speak to Materia because I have not touched it but saying Dynamis is "dead" is not true at all. It's certainly not as active as the other 3 NA servers but it has a small, dedicated and growing community that I'm really enjoying.

Sometimes if it's early in the day or later at night you have to shout chat and see if anyone can help with your queue and I've had to hand hold a few newbies but it's scratching that social side of mmos itch I needed and wasn't getting on Aether. There are less of us so the net worth and care people have is higher.

Any talk of recently established worlds and DCs growing is just cope, xiv is well past its prime and there won't be another influx like the wow refugees again.

Theyll keep the dead worlds online just so they dont have to publicly admit to a bad decision.

How about you read my subsequent message and come to the understanding that I was primarily talking about Dynamis. As for OCE in that same subsequent message I stated a solution. You can transfer. It may not be the solution you want but it is a solution. You have to understand that what you are experiencing is not the fault of SE. It is totally on the players. If players are indeed abandoning OCE for other pastures, your only recourse, if you want the experience of playing on a mature server, is to join them.

Debatable with how much traffic the game gets during major expansion launches. It's always quieter during the between periods between patches and patch population is not nearly as large as new expansion population (i.e. the people that come to do story and then leave afterwards). I'd expect to see a lot of returners and new people with the graphics update that is planned and the new QoL being added that people have been asking for. Will it be a WoW sized flood? Probably not and personally I think that's a good thing considering the only reason that happened was because of people doing some really shit things....so the less of that happening the better.

To answer your question simply, they would shut down the OCE Datacenter and merge the world onto the NA and EU servers based on which would have the better ping data.

...you know what, this is actually not a bad solution? I actually don't even mind losing the Oceania DC as long as the worlds remain and we get access to NA or EU DCs. If the solution is a merge, so be it.

I haven't yet had anywhere near enough trouble with queues to want the DC shut down or moved to another country.

Would most likely be with NA, the ping is better and we're ultimately closer to Australia geographically on California's side (which is where the servers are). EU would just death sentence the DC completely, ping wise.

Has it had it's issues. Yes. Is it dead and buried and we should give up? Not yet. It's not even a year old and you're trying to throw the baby out with the bath water. It's going to take time to grow so stop dragging it down.

I feel that with the FFXIV has peaked at Endwalker with the conclusion of the Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc (one can draw parallels to the release of Wrath of the Lich King back in 2008 for WoW) and it's just downhill from now onwards, which makes the release of new data centers and worlds even more confusing as it's just going to split the already declining player base even further.

People always say that WOW peaked at Lich King, when every expansion since (bar Mists) has outsold Lich King Day 1. WOW is making more money than ever before....

Vanilla, BC, and Wrath didn't have digital download pre-orders with bonuses. Most players were still going into a store to buy a physical copy on or after release date though some would pre-order their box copy through Amazon or their local game store.

The expansions from Cataclysm on did. That encouraged more players to pre-order for the sake of getting the bonuses, boosting day one sales totals (since the pre-orders couldn't be claimed as sales until release date).

Considering the subscription price hasn't changed between then and now, subscription revenues are way down and expansion price only brings in 1/3 of what an annual subscription does. They're certainly not making money there when the current player base is estimated to be in the 3-4 million range with a large portion of those only playing Classic.

Are cash shop and character service transactions increasing their revenues beyond what they were making back in 2010? Don't know. Certainly they have a ton more items on their cash shop than existed back then and character service transaction were booming for a while though I don't know how much are getting used anymore.

Honestly, there's no way to tell whether this game has peaked yet. We'll need to wait and see the long term response to the new story arc being introduced in 6.5.

I don't know enough about WoW to make any kind of judgement on it, but I think there's a lot of factors to take into consideration like the ones Jojoya mentioned.

Besides that, I think video games of any kind are super seasonal now. People play games when they're hyped up/brand new and then forget about them later. Even single player games suffer from this. There's no retention with playing games I feel. People who play something on day one of its release may not play throughout the existence of the game.

SE probably has accurate stats, but it's also probably fluffed a little bit.

I do not think, that a datacenter will fail. :) The point is, there is a big content dull for many people. Even some bigger streamers stopped playing FF14 because of this.

Pretty much this.

Unless someone is a roleplayer, prepping for 6.3 or going through MSQ for the first time/again on an alt, they're most likely not playing right now and haven't been since 6.2/6.25 launch. I think a lot underestimate how many play strictly for story and then dip out till the next story-related patch launches. Low pop is always a thing, especially if the patches themselves aren't giving enough content to keep all playstyles engaged for months at a time.

Yep, numbers always drop during patch content lulls. It's why devs try to squeeze out the time needed to complete things, otherwise people would complete them in a day and then bounce for another 4 months while complaining that everything they wanted to do was too easy to complete :P Instead we get the inverse of "it takes too long to get gear" which is the entire point lmao. Some people truly don't care and will do it at the end of the patches before xpacs drop to be ready for the xpac, others just complete everything during xpac drop to not have to be in the crowded areas and will take their time to catch up before taking a two-year long break after beating the vanilla x.0 patch. There are plenty of people who continue to play between then, working on achievements they want to do or working at their own pace at leveling things. Numbers will (and historically have) dip down and then surge again when new content hits that people are interested in. Plenty of people just do Savage and Ultimate fights and once they're done progging/farming them, they leave until the next set comes out. That's a healthy thing to do, as is just taking short breaks - I'm doing that myself while staying on low maint mode and logging in for Cactpot, Island stuff, and the occasional maps with friends or something, and I'm playing FFXI for a bit with some other games in between.

People coming back may be unhappy with how crowded their server is and move to the other DCs. People who are still playing may become unhappy with how crowded their server is with people coming back and move to the new DC. They don't just fill up to max capacity overnight, it will always take time. There were a LOT of people who didn't want to move to the EU servers after they got set up and they were pretty desolate for a while. Now they've got a new DC too with new servers. The more people in OCE start playing or moving, it'll start filling up - bonus points if SE opens up SEA to them too or something, that'd help a lot I imagine! Same with the new NA DC, it'll start filling with new players and old players alike and there's always incentives to move for people interested or already on the fence on if they should move.

I would actually draw parallels to the story of Shadowlands. The story felt like a brand new character they introduced suddenly is the big bad guy, the story they were building towards felt like it was hand waved away for all these new characters, and if we are going to go beyond story then we have to think of the "facebook waiting games" that each expansion brought (garrisons/Island sancturary). EW was a lot of things but it wasn't this game's Wrath of the Lich King.

I don't think we'll see them shut down a data center or even combine them. Think about the madness that was EW release. They flat-out stopped selling the game to protect the playerbase they did have. Even if new players or just expansion-release players only play the expansion for 3-6 months, that's roughly 9-12 months worth of subscription (purchase price plus a few months of subscription). If they can keep servers humming and the money coming in, they'll deal with some slow data centers in-between expansions.

The content lull gives people time to play better video games. Therefore, by giving us time to play them, FFXIV is actually doing a good thing by having a content lull. This is by design. This is how the game was meant to be. I don't want to play FFXIV all day, I want to play something that's actually good. Thank you, Yoshida. My shrinking backlog of games thanks you. My WoW toon thanks you. My Pokédex thanks you. This 100-minute queue in Dynamis has really added a lot to my life.

That opinion does spread to the smaller NA dc too. Dynamis is an absolute failure, to the point that it really won't warrant the other 4 new Dynamis servers for 7.0.

Whichever way you slice it a few things happened here:

* SE were caught fair and square with their pants down when the communitites grassroots push + Blizzard's toxic women problems hit. 6.0 was a disaster any way you look at it.
* SE royally screwed the pooch with Materia's release with the 6 month delay to housing - the community fractured as a result.
* SE continues to screw that well-screwed pooch by not giving Materia DC travel because Japan would be offended or whatever bull reason they spin.
* SE is sucking hard on copium to think NA needed another 8 servers. Dynamis is a dead duck with 4, and will only get worse with 8.

The game is now past that peak the community - and Blizz Toxicity - created in December and now well on the long tail.

A lot of 6.x content has been pretty lacking in terms of longevity.

Ishgard Housing? Gone in a second.
Crystaline Conflict? PVP isn't for everyone, and there are far better PVP games out there for this expierence. Its fine but its gotten kinda stale and the frequent balance issues with it sorta makes it drag.
Island Sanctuary? Boring, Disappointing grind. Get to max level, get the mount you want and drop it. Probably the biggest failure of Endwalker so far, and SE missing the mark entirely. No one even talks about it anymore. Why can you visit each others islands if there's no customization or activities to do as a group?
Variant Dungeons? You do it 12 times if you want the mount, 1 time if you dont, the skills are boring compared to systems we had already for Bozja or Eureka. Neat story telling but you'll finish this content in a week.
Criterion Dungeon? Kinda got sabatoged by its rewards being so lackluster people don't care. I don't actually mind this content, I enjoyed the fights quite a bit, but they're still just 3 mini bosses.
Criterion Savage? Same as before except now its more punishing, not even an extra boss fight or more mechanics, just more punishing because it is.

Everything else is the typical copy paste that we always see, I enjoy grinding out savage tiers, and beast tribes can give a good story, but they're not exciting or new, they're the same formula this game has done for years. Square Enix doesn't take risks and it shows.

Hoping the Deep Dungeon in 6.3 delivers in being interesting content Endwalker, and not just the HoH framework copied and pasted to a T. But I'm not holding my breath.

Not that it matters much, but it was a 3 and a half months of house delay for Materia housing. That's still a long time though for everyone in OCE to be homeless. I remember I did make a complaint that they should of opened up a few wards, and open up the rest when 6.1 releases.

But yeah. The game is passed its peak and a good majority have moved on. Materia was not even suppose to be released on January, and it was definitely a rushed release to fix the congestion issues with NA and JP data centers. They should of not done it during the time people were trying to clear the raid tier. It was awfully planned. If they wanted to release more data centers and worlds, they should of done it during X.5. It's during the time where we get back a lot of the casual players who are anticipating the next expansion as well.

The problem with FFXIV its that nothing actually matters because a casual player who barely touch the game on the next patch will have the same power level than you, everything you do per patch its meaningless.
I mean why even bother farming tomes when green items from dungeons or previous tomes gives you gear enough to complete everything without that much difference.

For the second time I'm skipping relic weapons too I mean why even bother? the last one demanded dunno how many runs of the most boring raid ever (CT). SE ran out of ideas years ago, instead of working on world building(major cities haven't chance since ARR .. 10 years ago) , a real progression system etc.. I mean we got to the point that even the gils doesn't matter there is nothing to with them besides buying items for a house that you likely never going to have.

The biggest tell for how things will go will be how the MSQ progresses into 7.0. If there's even half as much interest as during 6.0 then the servers will be quite needed, however, if there isn't then the servers are going to be a massive hinderance, and might eventually cause the playerbase to become too diluted. Apparently, something really big is coming in the coming patches so it could go either way.

Not an easy position to be in, and one that I am glad that I do not have to make the calls about.

Materia isn't actually as bad as most people make it out to be simply because we have developed to where if we need help we post a PF and you can generally get a decent response rate. We have quite a few people that love joining as helpers. Queue's can be hit and miss, though that mostly depends on the hours at which you play.

Content is possible to do for most players, and to say that isn't is simply wrong.

I can't speak for Dynamis as I have no first hand experience on that DC, but Materia isn't nearly as dead as people claim it is.

So far my experience in Dynamis has been... interesting.
Y'see, I transferred to Halicarnassus from Balmung. Prior to that, I was used to absolute insta-pop tank/healer queues. While playing such roles still speeds it up quite a bit, it can still be a bit of a wait. Personally, don't really mind it very much. I'm never desperate to cap, haven't been since HW era. It's just the pattern I'm noticing.

We had the zero bug on top. While not directly part of the initial brain-dead decision to delay housing 90 days, it pushed housing out a lot more and was another SE screw up, so I include that dead zone in the entire window, and think so rightly. Housing and FC halls were not there for most people until June, and it hurt the DC a lot.

Well, the servers were installed and in place, pretty much ready to go as we saw from the photos in mid 2021 (from memory), pre-EW release. SE could have hired trusted local engineers to finish the job before November 2021, plus not done the braindead housing rubbish they chose.

Most good system administrators have done far more complex remote international rollouts with many millions of dollars on the line, and some have also done work that required negative or even positive vetting. I didn't and still don't get the SE decision to wait until their in-house engineers could fly out, that didn't make sense.

If we're really going to play the "which DC is more dead" game then all you need to do is look at private housing to see that. Dynamis has all mansions either sold or about to be sold today and the mediums are starting to vanish. Materia still has dozens of mansions, including mine which I will be refunding as soon as I'm able to. According to PaissaDB, Zurvan alone has 4 pages of private mansions still available after almost a year of being live.
Materia doesn't work for anyone who doesn't actually live in Australia and follow their time zones. A friend of a friend who plays on OCE told me it's so dead that they've been slowly buying up an entire ward of FC houses because no one is buying them otherwise (and they literally live in Australia).

You can try to make it look as pretty as you want but the reality speaks for itself.

We've had this discussion quite a few times. I do agree with people pointing out that cross data center travel, will not help with long queues in the duty finder. I still however, think it's beneficial for players to have the option to exhaust the content outside their data center if they can't do it in their main one.

A data center needs numbers. But people will ditch a data center if it's not active enough, but are likely to come back to it during an expansion launch release to not deal with the login wars in an active data center.

But say if a data center still fails in the end. Not enough hype and interest during expansion release, which means not a good enough boost in numbers, that people just end up transferring back after the expansion craze is done. How do you think Yoshi P and the team will handle the situation?

There is no way they will delete the worlds. That would result in a major backlash, especially from people who still made a community there and want to keep their houses. I think the data center will be deleted, but all the words on that can be merged with another data center, likely split.

So what if they deleted the data center, but merged the words to another one. Could be a culture clash, but everyone could still keep their communities and their houses.

These are just predictions. I'm thinking about scenarios that could seem possible and what could be the best solution for a data center that is a confirmed failure. But what's your take on it?

Dynamis is in a really odd spot imo, and the release of Data Center Travel I feel has honestly made it feel more dead than it probably actually is.

I've noticed this on all the data centers really, DC Travel killed Crystal's PF, they don't even get clear parties for p8.
I saw a sharp reduction in Primal's PF as well, not as bad as Crystals but a notable decline regardless.
Aether on the other hand, its PF has gotten absolutely massive, and I see so many <Traveler> tags when I join it.

I feel like as a result, Dynamis has almost no chance for running content because people are so used to "well I gotta dc travel to do that" mentality now.
I mean on the upside, it means Dynamis players aren't really hurt for missing content. DC Travel is nice and should stay. On the other, the actaul Dynamis servers are ghost towns

It will die during the 2nd half of the expansion when people aren't playing.
Someone will come in and buy whole wards then the returning players will complain of no housing when x.0 launches.
Happened before, will happen again.
