Why does Square-Enix not sell subs for gil?

I mean it seriously... you dont hear of ANYONE being banned for buying gil. they need to do it aggressively, communicate it, advertise it even. you say they do, but I have never...ever.. heard of one person, banned for buying gil in this game...ever.

Genuine question, rather than a statement - but can they actually do that?

I mean, most MMOs have some sort of 'policy' (for lack of a better term) against naming and shaming. And whilst I guess they could possibly just issue a "XXX number of accounts banned due to illegal Gil purchases" type broadcast, would that have the same impact?

If subscriptions were low, it would be a gamble that might pay off. Giving players the ability to pay their way with their in-game activities. But they already have our money and the subscriber base is healthy. Why change it?

That same question can be applied to why you DONT think they ban buyers. Lets not create an argument loop here

in all fairness, you know the type of people that would be posting that here. we have people saying they were temporarily suspended for "nothing" which 99.9% of the time is patently false. I am sure we would have people protesting that they did not buy gil, that they were unjustly given a vacation for just a chance event, mistaken identity etc.

someone, somewhere, would have posted it in indignation at the event. and there havent been any, which is why I am very certain it has never happened. so, they do, but its likely the low hanging fruit.. like "I bought 200 million gil and I was perma banned" which you have to admit... is pretty stupid, but then some people are....

it might, especially since word of mouth also gets around. I doubt people would talk about it in game, but message boards and stuff, yeah, it would start getting around that SE was taking a firmer stance against buying. I mean, you do see some posts places from people saying they were banned. so, it happens, but not at the frequency it should be.

Yet theres also many other people whom get caught also realize their own mistakes and not go publicly about it in fear of being ostracized or ruin their reputation in whatever part theyre in the community. Ultimately the drama wouldnt be worth the effort

You know the old saying, the loud ones are always the minority? Same can be applied here, so to act disingenous and believe that just because we dont see a lot of outcry from folks who got rightfully banned means that it doesnt happen is also in the wrong.

Its so easy to act like you know everything when you decide to not think about both sides of the issue.

It's different when there's no legitimate way to buy the currency. In this case, you either put in absolute loads and loads of time and effort into farming (as was actually IIRC a pretty common thing in late ARR: in those days it was far more difficult to be a functional endgame omnicrafter, so they actually did make enough gil to legitimately buy carries for things like Ex trials) or it's clear you probably bought currency and even if there isn't a clear enough paper trail to report you, you'll likely suffer the social consequences of it.

Additionally, this kept run selling (well, other than GDKP, which was a form of run selling in essence) somewhat under control since so few legit players actually had enough currency to be worth it, and "go RMT" was obviously not a valid retort. Now that we have the WoW Token, the WoW culture has internalized and legitimized the carry P2W that comes with it. Purchasing your way to gear and then using that "experience" to get into content is not only routine, but virtually expected if you don't have a sweat's free time. Any kind of criticism is ruthlessly deflected as a "You Problem" ($40 a week in WoW Tokens is too much for you, you say? "You need to get off the game and go improve your job IRL." Literally had an argument of this sort during Shadowlands); despite (lowercase t) token efforts from Blizzard to tone down advertising, it's pretty clear that the people that benefit from the carry mill have captured the game culture to the point of no return.

And of course, cleaning up game culture is largely impossible, again because of platforms like Discord leaving us old fogy defenders of humanity hopelessly outgunned.

Don't legitimize RMT. It has some attractive features, but it will certainly be as noted above.

look, years ago I was one of the one s that bought game currency in another game. I "enjoyed" a vacation from that game.

so deciding without evidence makes it easy to accuse others of not thinking of both sides. you full well know that the people who would complain about it on the forums have no fear of whatever "reputation" they have left. and yet.. there are none. which means it doesnt happen as often as you would prefer to believe.

Just cause other games does it, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I think if SQEX banned Gil buyers they would state so in their monthly/weekly RMT bans. alongside advertisers and bots.

Well hopefully FFXIV will be bought by someone else who can give them a bigger budget then SE can give. SE has been dying out for a while now and the proof shows with selling off IP's. One game cannot keep a company afloat

For a dying company they sure are putting out quite a bit in 2023. Also a new company helming XIV doesn't automatically mean the game will be so much better. Tera and Vindictus comes to mind
