LMAO, this has to be one of the most awful takes I've heard of on this forums.
"if you dont want to get harassed just dont mention <X>"
tell that to everyone who gets harassed online, see how that goes

Because the MSQ is so ingrained into the game, I'm thinking the effort it takes to skip it, and continue to do so doesn't really garner a whole lot of benefit. Cutscenes and character dialogue are only a portion of the whole pie. You still have to get the game to check off the required quests, and those that can't be cleared via skip potion are still going have players go through things like, "X notices your arse is following too close, so walk that rump back to the starting point and try again." Except now it makes even less sense why you're doing it.
I won't harass a player for skipping the story, but they should also probably skip any and all discussions about it as well. Those who dislike it at least went through it and have more substance to draw their arguments from.
This thread again? arent you tired already of bringing this stuff up?
I won't ever harass people for disliking the story.
But the number of times I see new players criticize having to do Crystal Tower apart of the MSQ will always leave a sour taste in my mouth. It's always hard to resist asking them to relax on it because it will be important later.
So much this. It's so taxing and draining to have a conversation about the game's story with someone who skipped it. Feels like, why are we having this discussion at all?
I will. It's a common take as well, just so you know.
It's like going to a place of worship and saying you worship nobody. It's trolling to press the fact you don't like story in a story game.
Everyone that I've seen press it in the novice network just came to the game because they wanted to troll and, ironically, harass people for liking the story. The majority of people who skip just don't make a big deal out of it like that.
Now they might mention that they skipped in a conversation, but what I mean is they don't make a big deal out of it usually and therefore don't stir up a heated debate like any troll does.
Its a story centered game, if you dont like story, its the wrong game. Im not buying a racing game while hating racing games just bc i like cars lol
People get harassed for skipping cutscenes? That's news to me. As long as you aren't braindead with whatever class you are using...I think you are fine. Some people play for gameplay...not story. I played WoW for years and I couldn't give you a single line of what the story is about.
Well, that's too late: last year I literally got harassed and canceled by my own FC after saying that I didn't like the SHB story, because how dare I have a personal opinion. SHB is the literal bible of storytelling, don't you know?!?!?!?!
But I'm definitely not surprised if people go to the point of harassing, which is sad...but totally expected, it's not the first time if the community starts attacking something that doesn't go their way (parser anyone?)
And to think that, I always said that if you like something, no matter how much I dislike it, it's fine as long as you realize that there are others who don't. I respect people who like the story...so why can't anybody respect me disliking the story? Is it too much to ask? Well I guess so, because I lost a lot of """""""friends""""""" by expressing my take on the story. What great friends!
But hey according to my old FC I had no clue about it, so what do I know right? I'm just a troll who has no taste, at least as someone said many years ago!
Now excuse me while I try to find another crappy jrpg to enjoy my time with! I heard Alliance Alive is fun but what do I know!
Not really. You just come across as bizarrely defensive in response to someone exercising their right to post here, in all honesty. You're not "calling" anything out. You're just complaining about the fact that he posted an opinion you disliked, and not entirely unprompted, but also not in a thread where it's off topic. Let's not kid ourselves here as to what's going on here.
Both those characterise the bulk of comments I see on sites like Reddit, and both are quite prevalent amongst story enjoyers. The amount of baseless headcanon I encounter in this community, including amongst the very people who sneer "omg stop skipping cutscenes" or who fancy themselves as lore 'hawks', is legend. Comprehension of the story, as written, is really not widespread in this community. Headcanon is the currency of much of its lore commenting.
The racing bit in your statement made me think of NASCAR. Tell the racing faithful their sport is just a series of left turns, and you don't get what the big deal is, and see what happens. Those who decide to partake in FFXIV and then decide to bash the story are essentially doing the same thing. You can't be surprised if you get stung by a bunch of wasps if you kick a hornet's nest.
The "harassment" I have experienced in regards to this matter has been a response to those who like to throw rocks. Easily avoided by not throwing said rocks.
If we're at the point where we have to tread on eggshells around members of an emotionally volatile cult, on a site which SE itself directs people to for providing critical feedback, I'd say the game has failed Yoshi's very vision of how it should be. The story is not exempt from criticism and if this game wants to pride itself on its story? Buckle up and accept that.
Imagine that, you generalize everyone that enjoys the story as "an emotionally volative cult", and cry when you get push back. It sounds like YOU'RE the one that needs to buckle up and accept that most people enjoy the story/game. This isn't some safe space where you can criticize anything in the game without anyone calling bullshit on it.
I am generalising anyone who reacts through harassment to someone disliking the story as an emotionally volatile cult. Absolutely and emphatically: yes.
Just to be clear here: are you trying to justify harassment of people who don't enjoy the story?Quote:
It sounds like YOU'RE the one that needs to buckle up and accept that most people enjoy the story/game. This isn't some safe space where you can criticize anything in the game without anyone calling bullshit on it.
Moreover, this site is in fact governed by a TOS. To that extent? Yes, it absolutely is intended as a 'safe space' in some respects, especially from overly attached individuals who don't understand boundaries and begin resorting to harassment.
You can swear, rant, rave, type in caps all you like. It doesn't change that. Want to test it? Keep it up and see how it ends.
I can assure you he isn't 'crying'. He's simply telling it like it is - and given that his comment was posted in response to others generalising people who criticised the story this appears to be little more than the usual attempt at deflection on your part.
Also please don't swear. It's very rude and not at all appropriate for a game written and increasingly intended to cater to a young audience.
And we've reached the part where both sides start slinging insults.
Interesting take. I don't believe I see any evidence anything said in this thread is referring to "everyone that enjoys the story," however. Context would appear to indicate this particular statement applies only to those whose reactions to criticisms of the story are volatile.
In all fairness, I don't believe anyone who frequents these forums can in good faith claim individuals who come forward with criticisms of the story aren't frequently met with some rather harsh words. No matter how constructive or heartfelt their observations may be, there will ever be a group of people more than willing to jump down their throats. Similarly, there's an equally loud minority of people who detest the story and will jump down the throats of anyone coming forward in support of it. Between these two extremes lie the majority, most of whom would like to be able to discuss these matters with civility and reason rather than people coming at them with the online equivalent of a baseball bat.
The two extremes noted above have a tendency to lump anyone they disagree with in with their opposite extreme. Not everyone voicing discontent -- or content, for that matter -- is out here looking to get jumped by people lacking the ability to separate their widdle feefees from higher thought.
There are some people who do harass those who are giving honest constructive feedback on the story and the path(s) they wish the story took instead. Those are the people I think that Lauront is referring to.
Not to the people who respond back disagreeing but in a polite and equally constructive manner.
I am referring to his vision as articulated here:

I am curious how building up a community that asphyxiates feedback is conducive to this.
Indeed, you are right. Especially given the very context of this thread and when the comparison given in the post above my post being quoted, was kicking a hornet's nest; in that case, the relevant behaviour that springs to mind is that of an angered hive. Very consistent with the behaviour of those harassing people that don't like the story, and also behaviour which stifles criticism and is antithetical to what Yoshi outlined as his ideal approach to feedback for the game.
I'm afraid you've confused me for someone interested in childish games. The number though is about as large as would be implied by the definition I provided...
I love all of the MSQ, can't stand Hildy personally, my favourite expansion is Stormblood which is followed by SHB, ARR wasn't so bad, but then I did content as it was released and have always done so, protect please.
I suspect the enormity of starting from 2.0 to 6.2 is possibly alot and does cause story skipping. People can skip etc and state any opinion, fair play there is no issue. Opinion is like feedback which is simply a box of chocolates which I don't always have to eat, opinions of any kind don't impact me personally. The one thing I can control is my own enjoyment, being decent and respectful to others. Anything I perceive negative and based on my own judgement I can just /shrug it off and ignore it. This game for me is entertainment, joy and to rela, that is always the outcome I aim for or I simply logoff.
Just going to leave this here, and I'm out of this

Venat loves you, never forget.
But he's right.
So let's say you tell someone: read this book, it's really well written.
And the person reads the first 10 pages and the last 10 pages and skips the 1000 pages in between and then says: Worst story ever. A monkey could write a better story.
Would you take this person seriously?
I'm against harassment, but I would tell them: play New Game+ without skipping and then we can talk about the story
Note the separation between their sentiments in the post. This is an individual stating people taking umbrage with the story should be harassed, and those who were skipping. Context is very important.
In other words, they're saying any and all criticisms are worthy of harassment regardless of whether or not someone has taken the time to watch the entire story.
One needn't watch the cutscenes to understand the story. There are any number of lore repositories available at this time, many of which provide ample proof of accuracy. Is it better to watch them? Yes, but choosing not to does not automatically disqualify someone from the conversation.
The above aside, while I will agree with you on the point of people needing to know what they're talking about before trying to tear the story to shreds, more than a few of the people coming out against it do know what they are talking about.
What drives me absolutely bonkers—and what I encounter surprisingly often, compared to "I just always skip story"—are the people who skip through story because they want to rush to endgame, then complain that everything going on story-wise is too confusing. Well... yes? You fundamentally picked up a book and started reading at chapter 23 or whatever; it should not be terribly surprising there will be stuff in the previous 22 chapters which might be relevant to the portions you are reading now.
If folks always skip the story because they enjoy the gameplay and don't care about the story at all, cool; I have no problem with that. I personally think they're missing out, but different people have different tastes, and I won't criticize for that. If you're not actively ruining other people's enjoyment of the game, then you go do you; it's not my place to decide how you engage with media.
But if you are skipping the story because you're impatient to get to higher-level content yet plan to stop skipping it and take it slower once caught up... then yeah, in those cases, I'm absolutely going to tell you I think you're making a mistake. Not like, in a bullying manner, but in a "you're doing your future self no favors" fashion. And if you choose to still skip ahead to endgame, then please at least go back and read a summary of the story you skipped, rather than complaining to everyone else that the story's confusing and asking them to explain it just because you chose to skip all the context.
This, basically.
We both know he's not telling it "like it is." Heck, around here it's effectively the opposite - say you actually like the story (or anything about this game) and watch the little cabal of negativity go to town. Case in point - when IS came out there were the usual posters with the whole "IS is terrible" threads. There was onethread from someone talking about what they enjoyed about it - and within the first several comments were several someones (I won't name names, but notably present in this thread, too) either straight-up going after them or passive-aggressively saying they were "wrong" for liking it. They're so bitter they can't even stand the thought of someone else being happy. It's sad, really.
Frankly, there's only two cases I see where people get criticized for commenting negatively on the story here. One was already taken care of by the OP - the people who skip the story and then complain about it. The second is people who act as if they're the arbiters of what is "good" and "bad," rather than just offering an opinion on something. They tend to directly and personally attack the dev team (and other players who are having a good time), and when it comes down to it, it basically amounts to a very immature "they didn't write the story I wanted, therefore it's bad" philosophy. So yes, it's a natural human response when you (a proverbial "you," not you personally) effectively harass people by claiming they're wrong for enjoying something, to get flak in return.
Thats what i did with shadowbringer. Skipped away to try new jobs. Then grabbed myself a nice cup of coffee and watched the story on YouTube. Watching someone else narrate story in 20 mins videos while i can kick back and relax is much more enjoyable and i didn't miss a thing. I play ffxiv for combat, glam and trying new classes. Will do the same with Endwalker.
Unfortunately, this seems to be very common. The story here is something sacred to many, criticizing it is, somehow, criticizing them personally. It's always sad to read harassment happen on that level due to an opinion on the story. I personally thought ShB was fairly enjoyable, for what it was, but I won't hold it against someone else if they didn't like it or aspects of it.
